A jaw-dropping and unputdownable oral history of the New York Post and the legendary tabloid’s cultural impact from the 1970s to today as recounted by the men and women who witnessed it firsthand. By the 1970s, the country’s oldest continuously published newspaper had fallen on hard times, just like its nearly bankrupt hometown. When the New York Post was sold to a largely unknown Australian named Rupert Murdoch in 1976, staffers hoped it would be the start of a new golden age for the paper. Now, after the nearly fifty years Murdoch has owned the tabloid, American culture reflects what Murdoch first started in the 1970s: a celebrity-focused, noisy, one-sided media empire that reached its zenith with Fox News. Drawing on extensive interviews with key players and in-depth research, this eye-opening, wildly entertaining oral history shows us how we got to this point. It’s a rollicking tale full of bad behavior, inflated egos, and a corporate culture that rewarded skirting the rules and breaking norms. But working there was never boring and now, you can discover the entire remarkable true story of America’s favorite tabloid newspaper.
Is the customer really always right? Heck no. For every friendly and polite customer, there’s an entitled and cranky shopper waiting for the world to be handed to them on a platter. Unreasonable expectations and out of proportion reactions can beat a retailer down, and this makes it an unhappy buying experience for everyone. This book is a public service, aimed at making consumers better human beings, and helping employers create happy customers. Through it you will learn how to be a better shopper, how not to be a lousy employee, and maybe, just maybe, how not to be such a jackass to those around you.

In the last few years, Vietnam Veterans, including myself, have experienced a phenomenon that is hard to explain. People are interested in the Vietnam War! I think the audience for Vietnam War stories is a diverse one. From young people with a thirst for knowledge about what their fathers and grandfathers went through in the only war that America has lost (so far history hasn't made its final judgment on Iraq and Afghanistan) to the baby boomers who fought in Vietnam. Even those boomers who demonstrated actively against the war and resisted being part of it are suddenly interested. This book provides those interested with what they crave: more true stories of what it was like to live the life of a Marine ground pounder in Vietnam. It's like a good adventure novel, when your own "theater of the mind" puts you in the shoes of the main character.

The myths and legends of the Tibetan Book of the Dead come alive in this brilliant first novel by the world-renowned director of stage and opera. Laurel Hunt walked into the office of David Sussman enveloped in a grave beauty that took his breath away. And then she announced that her husband, who was currently in a mental institution, was not crazy but in the grip of something monstrous. Dr. Sussman had ministered to his patients' fantasies, neuroses, and psychoses for a good number of years; he'd studied in India and Tibet; he'd seen and heard it all before. Or so he thought. This case would take him, against his will and in the face of every scientific law he held dear, into the realms of reincarnation and Buddhist myth. But these realms were not the bottom of this mystic enigma-only in the Tibetan Book of the Dead would David Sussman begin to find the answers he sought. As murder and madness stalk him, the evidence leads David to a conclusion his sanity refuses to accept . . . until the mists of Time and Space open to reveal the monstrosity that has come to claim him as its own-the Kunma. A stunning first novel that takes the reader deep into the unknown regions of mind and soul and into the very heart of the darkness that lives in every human being. A great public service--critical for our time." --Bandy X. Lee, M.D., M.Div., Yale psychiatrist, expert on violence, and editor of The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump The New York Times-bestselling author of Bush on the Couch shows that Donald Trump is mentally and emotionally unfit to execute the duties of President. No president in the history of the United States has inspired more alarm and confusion than Donald Trump. As questions and concerns about his decisions, behavior, and qualifications for office have multiplied, they point to one primary question: Does he pose a genuine threat to our country? The American Psychiatric Association's Goldwater Rule constrains psychiatrists from offering diagnoses on public figures who are not patients and who have not endorsed such statements. But in Trump on the Couch Clinical Professor of Psychiatry Justin A Frank invokes the moral responsibility that compels him to speak out and present a full portrait of a man who presents us with a clear and present danger. Using observations gained from a close study of Trump's patterns of thought, action, and communication, Dr. Frank uncovers a personality riddled with mental health issues. His analysis is filled with important revelations about our nation's leader, including disturbing insights into his childhood, his family, his business dealings, and his unusual relationship with alternative facts, including how The absence of a strong maternal force during childhood has led to Trump's remarkable lack of empathy and disregard for women's boundaries; His compulsion to polarize America has grown out of the way he perceives the world as full of deceitful and destructive persecutors; His inability to tolerate the pain of frustration has triggered his belief that omnipotence will finally remove it; His idiosyncratic use of language points to larger issues than even his tweets might suggest. With our country itself at stake, Dr. Frank calls attention to the underlying narcissism, misogyny, deception, and racism that drive the President who endangers it. A penetrating examination of how we as a nation got here and, more important, where we are going, Trump on the Couch sounds a call to action that we cannot ignore.

Twenty-five years in the making, a first novel that has already been compared to The Sun Also Rises and The Last Tycoon, Cheat and Charmer is certain to be one of the most admired literary debuts of the season. Written by Pulitzer Prize—winning biographer Elizabeth Frank, Cheat and Charmer is a masterful and richly detailed work of fiction–a Tolstoyan novel of marriage, sisterhood, art, politics, compromise, and betrayal set in Hollywood, New York, Paris, and London of the 1950s. Dinah Lasker grew up in the shadow of her sister, Veevi, a stunning beauty and emerging star who enchanted both the Hollywood set and its imported New York literati. But Veevi’s home was also a hotbed of political activity, owing to her marriage to Stefan Ventura, a Bulgarian filmmaker and high-profile Communist. At the end of the 1930s, when things go badly for him in Hollywood, Ventura and Veevi flee to Paris and into the lengthening shadows of Hitler and fascism. Cut to 1951, when Dinah is subpoenaed by the House Un-American Activities Committee, which threatens to ruin her husband, Jake, and derail his successful career as a Hollywood writer, producer, and director unless she cooperates. Can Dinah live with herself if she names Veevi–whom she both loves and loathes–in order to save her husband and preserve her idyllic married life? The choices Dinah makes set in motion an unforgettable chain of events. Like Anna Karenina, Dinah must face the consequences of her choices and her needs. Written with elegance and style, Cheat and Charmer grippingly dramatizes the interior lives of Dinah, Veevi, Jake, and their social circle. Spanning decades and following complex characters on their impassioned pursuits through America and Europe, this is a novel of grand scope, about love and deception, idealism and accommodation, the lies we live, and the truths we cannot avoid.

This is a pseudoplay (the kind meant to be read, not seen on stage or screen) about the nature of Evil. The play begins with the real-live crucifixion of the main protagonist on Mount Zion in present-day Jerusalem and continues with five flashbacks in five Acts, examining Evil by means of the thoughts, actions and personality clashes of the various characters. The plot intensifies throughout the Acts, first with a crescendo at the end of Act One, then with another at the end of Act Three, and then with a final crescendo at the end of Act Five. The climax leads directly to the crucifixion scene in the Prologue. Finally, a resolution of the main problem is provided in the Epilogue, and it is shown how Evil may be harnessed and made to serve Good. The play thus ends on a note of hope and cautious optimism but without underestimating the power of Evil. It was written in December 1986, completed in March, 1987, and published for the first time in August, 2007, for the second in January, 2018.
