Most Americans see the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 as the culmination of the civil rights movement. When the law was enacted, black voter registration in Mississippi soared. Few black candidates won office, however. In this book, Frank Parker describes black Mississippians' battle for meaningful voting rights, bringing the story up to 1986, when Mike Espy was elected as Mississippi's first black member of Congress in this century. To nullify the impact of the black vote, white Mississippi devised a political "massive resistance" strategy, adopting such disenfranchising devices as at-large elections, racial gerrymandering, making elective offices appointive, and revising the qualifications for candidates for public office. As legal challenges to these mechanisms mounted, Mississippi once again became the testing ground for deciding whether the promises of the Fifteenth Amendment would be fulfilled, and Parker describes the court battles that ensued until black voters obtained relief.

The book is divided into 5 sections: the first and second sections provide introductory topics, such as anatomical variances of the articulations and soft tissues, the biomechanics of the shoulder, diagnostic imaging, specialist and functional examinations. The third section is dedicated to the description of surgical solutions in acute articular, muscle and tendinous pathologies. Rehabilitation and prevention are described in the fourth section, where the authors present exercises of post-surgical rehabilitation, techniques of mobilizing in manual therapy and load multidimensional model. The last two chapters in this section are dedicated to prevention, especially of chronic pathologies, using intervention influencing programmes, methodology of training and how to rectify incorrectly performed movements. The last section is dedicated to the use of electromyography of the surface. This method is used to register muscular activity during training; the description contains practical information and a great number of references of clinical interest.

`Any cognitive therapy text which quotes from Alice in Wonderland is off to a good start - and in the case of Counselling for Anxiety Problems, it gets better and better. This is an excellent book written by counselling psychologists, aimed primarily at counselling psychologists. Diana Sanders and Frank Wills are experienced cognitive therapists, who, through various books, are performing a valuable role of building bridges between counsellors and the practice of cognitive therapists. In doing so, they lay to rest many of the misconceptions counsellors may have about cognitive therapy (often based on an 80s version of the therapy), and place particular emphasis on the central importance of therapeutic relationship in cognitive therapy, as in counselling. Their review and discussion of the anxiety disorders is comprehensive and contemporary, as indicated by the number of references from the past five years. Furthermore their clinical experience, as well as their humour, shines through. Although primarily aimed at the counselling market, it will be just as useful for therapists from a variety of backgrounds. I can thoroughly recommend this book′ - Amazon Review Anxiety is one of the most common psychological problems for which people seek help. Through research, major advances have been made in understanding the causes of anxiety, the different forms it takes and how problems perpetuate. Uses the collective testimony from more than two hundred Patriot War claims, previously believed to have been destroyed, to offer insight into the lesser-known Patriot War of 1812 and to constitute an intellectual history of everyday people caught in the path of an expanding American empire In the late seventeenth century a group of about a dozen escaped African slaves from the English colony of Carolina reached the Spanish settlement of St. Augustine. In a diplomatic bid for sanctuary, to avoid extradition and punishment, they requested the sacrament of Catholic baptism from the Spanish Catholic Church. Their negotiations brought about their baptism and with it their liberation. The Cana Sanctuary focuses on what author Frank Marotti terms “folk diplomacy”—political actions conducted by marginalized, non-state sectors of society—in this instance by formerly enslaved African Americans in antebellum East Florida. The book explores the unexpected transformations that occurred in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century St. Augustine as more and more ex-slaves arrived to find their previously disregarded civil rights upheld under sacred codes by an international, nongovernmental, authoritative organization. With the Catholic Church acting as an equalizing, empowering force for escaped African slaves, the Spanish religious sanctuary policy became part of popular historical consciousness in East Florida. As such, it allowed for continual confrontations between the law of the Church and the law of the South. Tensions like these survived, ultimately lending themselves to an “Afro-Catholicism” sentiment that offered support for antislavery arguments.
