The author has also added a brief essay to each of the Bibles sixty-six books with thoughts and experiences taken from his life. One of Frank Olssons favorite verses from the Bible is Psalms 90:2 which says: Teach us to ponder how few our days are that we may live each one wisely. The author began his project of reading the Bible from A Z after he and his wife planned a trip to Jerusalem. As he read, he lifted out everything that spoke to him, i.e. all the positive pieces, like dance, song, wine, love, etc., parts that anyone can relate to regardless of religious affiliation. Once he had those notes he decided to write sixty-six essays, one to each book of the Bible. These are about how we can lead a life of love, generosity and compassion whether we see ourselves as religious or not.

Jan Waldenström (1906-1996) was the leading Swedish internist of the twentieth century. The first chapter of the book presents his remarkable family including five generations of physicians. Born in Stockholm, we follow JW to medical school at Uppsala University during 1924–33. In 1934–5, he spent a year in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Hans Fischer in Munich. In 1937, he defended a landmark thesis on acute intermittent porphyria. As “Docent” (assistant professor) in Uppsala, he discovered two new diseases in 1943. In 1944–5, he spent 7 months in the US commissioned by the Swedish Health Board. This started friendships with leading colleagues and scientists. With time, JW fostered a worldwide network of contacts and became a most influential international star. But this was just the beginning. The book follows Waldenström's remarkable career including his description of chronic active hepatitis as a new disease, his introduction of nuclear medicine in Sweden, his pioneering of the concept of the concept of poly- and monoclonal gammopathies, and many more highly significant achievements. His legacy is emphasized by Waldenström lectures, Waldenström Prizes, and by the International Waldenström’s Macroglobulinemia Foundation, IWMF, and the Bing Center for Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia at the Dana Farber Institute of Cancer Institute of the Harvard University in Boston. And now, not least, by this comprehensive biography.

A new model for effective global environmental governance in an era of human-caused planetary transformation and disruption. Humans are no longer spectators who need to adapt to their natural environment. Our impact on the earth has caused changes that are outside the range of natural variability and are equivalent to such major geological disruptions as ice ages. Some scientists argue that we have entered a new epoch in planetary history: the Anthropocene. In such an era of planet-wide transformation, we need a new model for planet-wide environmental politics. In this book, Frank Biermann proposes “earth system” governance as just such a new paradigm. Biermann offers both analytical and normative perspectives. He provides detailed analysis of global environmental politics in terms of five dimensions of effective governance: agency, particularly agency beyond that of state actors; architecture of governance, from local to global levels; accountability and legitimacy; equitable allocation of resources; and adaptiveness of governance systems. Biermann goes on to offer a wide range of policy proposals for future environmental governance and a revitalized United Nations, including the establishment of a World Environment Organization and a UN Sustainable Development Council, new mechanisms for strengthened representation of civil society and scientists in global decision making, innovative systems of qualified majority voting in multilateral negotiations, and novel institutions to protect those impacted by global change. Drawing on ten years of research, Biermann formulates earth system governance as an empirical reality and a political necessity.

However, its origins as a field, often linked to partnerships and projects at various brain-focused research centres in the United States during the 1960s, can be traced much further back in time. In A New Field in Mind Frank Stahnisch documents and analyzes the antecedents of the modern neurosciences as an interdisciplinary field. Although postwar American research centres, such as Francis O. Schmitt's Neuroscience Research Program at MIT, brought the modern field to prominence, Stahnisch reveals the pioneering collaborations in the early brain sciences at centres in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in the first half of the twentieth century. One of these, Heinrich Obersteiner's institute in Vienna, began its work in the 1880s. Through case studies and collective biographies, Stahnisch investigates the evolving relationships between disciplines – anatomy, neurology, psychiatry, physiology, serology, and neurosurgery – which created new epistemological and social contexts for brain research. He also shows how changing political conditions in Central Europe affected the development of the neurosciences, ultimately leading to the expulsion of many physicians and researchers under the Nazi regime and their migration to North America. To act against the negative effects of climate change, the European Union (EU) has increased its efforts in the field of renewable energies. This led to the definition of national and EU wide targets for the share of energy from renewable sources in gross final consumption of energy by the year 2020 for each EU-Member state and the Union as a whole. To reach these aims without jeopardising other important aims like food security and nature conservation, sustainable systems of recovery of renewable energy have to be developed. One possibility is the “integrated generation of solid fuel and biogas from biomass” (IFBB). Its core element is the mechanical separation of the biomass into a solid fuel for combustion and a liquid for anaerobic digestion. This study investigated the technology on a prototype scale for a variety of European semi natural grasslands and urban green cut biomasses. The quality of the derived energy carriers and the parameters influencing these qualities were in the research focus. In addition, the IFBB system was compared to other energy recovery systems.
