It is often a challenging and overwhelming transition to go from being a student to being a teacher. Many new faculty members of engineering and science have to make this dramatic transition in a very short time. In the same closing months of your Ph.D. program you are trying to complete your research, finish and defend your dissertation, find a job, move to a new location, and start a new job as a faculty member. Troy H. Middleton (1889-1976) was the youngest colonel in the American Expeditionary Force in France during World War I. Later, he served as commander of the Army’s 45th Division and then the VIII Corps. During World War II, Middleton spent more time in combat than any other general officer. General Middleton made key tactical decisions in the largest and most complex military action in which the U.S. Army has ever been involved—the Battle of the Bulge. In 1951, Louisiana State University’s board of supervisors appointed Middleton president of the university. He had previously served at the school as commandant of cadets, professor of military science, dean, and vice president. While president of LSU, Middleton oversaw a sustained period of growth and academic achievement. Like many other university presidents in the Jim Crow era, throughout his tenure at LSU, he also staunchly upheld his institution’s deeply-racist segregationist policies. In this thoroughly researched biography, Frank James Price tells Middleton’s life story from his boyhood plantation days in Copiah County, Mississippi, to his public service achievements after his retirement as president of Louisiana State University in 1962. In much of the book, the author, through taped interviews, allows Middleton to tell his own story. In researching the book, Price interviewed and/or corresponded with General Dwight D. Eisenhower, General Omar Bradley, and other personal acquaintances of General Middleton.
The author aptly characterizes this work as a "series of itineraries" by which the reader is made familiar with much of the history of Manhattan Island by being led to the very spots associated with important historical events. But this book is much more. It is surprising and refreshing to read a defense of the Five Points from the pen of so intelligent a witness. We who are deeply interested in New York history thank the author for the facts which he has collected. There is a unique arrangement of the interesting, instructive, and inspiring matter which makes it a literary work of a high order. And: the book has a distinct purpose - the interesting of the people in the history and historic localities of the city and the awakening in them of civic pride and affection.
Dubbed "America's Game" by Walt Whitman, baseball has been enjoyed in our nation's capital by everyone from young boys playing street stickball to Presidents throwing out the inaugural first pitch of the season. Just 13 years after Alexander Cartwright codified baseball's rules, the Washington Nationals Baseball Club formed and in 1867 toured the country spreading the "baseball gospel." By 1901 the team became one of the first eight major league teams in the newly formed American League. Players such as Walter Johnson, probably the greatest pitcher of all time, and other Senators under the stewardship of owner Clark Griffith successfully led the club in 1924 to what many consider to be the most exciting World Series in baseball history. Later, the Homestead Grays played at Griffith Stadium and fielded a team featuring legendary Negro League greats such as Josh Gibson and Buck Leonard. The powerhouse Grays, during a ten-year span, won nine Negro League World Championships, a record that may never be equaled in any team sport again. When the Grays disbanded, the original Senators left for Minnesota in 1960, and the expansion Senators of the 1960s relocated, the city was left without a professional baseball team. While many feared that baseball in D.C. was over, a spirit remained on the diamond and is still felt today as children and adults team up in one way or another to play the national pastime in the nation's capital. Hopes for a new professional team linger, and those remembering baseball's heyday will enjoy this extensive and unusual collection ofhistoric photos that celebrate a time when the crowds roared and Washingtonians believed that the summer game would never end.
In the writing of this history the aim has been to give in a simple narrative all facts, both great and seemingly small, that tend to show how the Newark of the present day has been built up, generation by generation. Anything and everything that seemed to add life, light and color to the story, that was to be found and was authentic, has been made use of. One of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War, the two-day engagement near Shiloh, Tennessee, in April 1862 left more than 23,000 casualties. Chasing Villa is a record of events in Western history, military history, the Mexican Revolution, and the last of the horse cavalry. Following its first publication in 1934, U.S. Army Colonel Frank Tompkins’ account of the Punitive Expedition by a participant became widely considered to be one of the most comprehensive. The book tells the story of the Columbus Raid and Pershing’s Expedition into Mexico. On March 9, 1916 the border town of Columbus, New Mexico was attacked by forces under the command of the Mexican revolutionary, Pancho Villa. Eighteen Americans were killed and a number of buildings were burned to the ground before the U.S. Cavalry, inflicting heavy losses, drove Villa and his mounted band back into Mexico. Frank Tompkins, a Major in the U.S. Cavalry at the time, led the counterattack against Villa’s mounted men on March 9th, and was with General John “Black Jack” Pershing during the subsequent year-long “Punitive Expedition” that sought to capture the elusive Villa in Mexico. The Columbus Raid and Punitive Expedition proved to be the last major campaign of the U.S. Cavalry. At the same time it presaged the more modern military techniques that would soon be employed by American forces in World War I. First published in 1934 and long out of print, “Chasing Villa” is a sound and literate record of milestone events in Western history, military history, the Mexican revolution, and the last of the horse cavalry.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many Jews from Central and Eastern Europe arrived in New York City, where they did not only find a new home, but far away from their shtetl origin, the new members of the American society also began to politically radicalize. There has been a discussion in the literature related to the field, where, how, and why the Jewish population radicalized. This study analyses two waves of radicalization: one related to the American environment that is responsible for the described process at the end of the 19th century; one, related to the developments in Eastern Europe during the early decades of the 20th century. For both radicalization processes this book compares the reasons, elements, and aims of those who join radical movements to show that there is a transatlantic perspective that links both processes to each other.
During his time as a POW, Frank "Foo" Fujita kept a diary of daily happenings, embellished with drawings of life in the camp. He secreted the diary in the walls of his barracks, as the practice was forbidden. That diary forms the basis of these memoirs. Fujita's memoirs are also unique in that he was one of the fewer than nine hundred Americans taken prisoner on the island of Java. The bulk of American POWs in Japanese hands surrendered in the Philippines, and most of the published POW memoirs reflect their experience. Fujita's account of the defense of Java and of the fate of the "Lost Battalion" of Texas artillerymen serves to distinguish this memoir from others. At one point while a POW in Japan, Fujita was forced to be part of the Japanese radio group broadcasting propaganda. After the war, he testified at some of the war crime trials in San Francisco, and the diary on which this book is based was used as evidence in those trials.
