In the last two decades, new communication technologies have dramatically changed the world in which mental health professionals and their patients live. Developments such as e-mail, online chat groups, Web pages, search engines, and electronic databases are directly or indirectly affecting most people's routines and expectations. Other developments are poised to do so in the near future. Already, for example, patients are acquiring both good and bad advice and information on the Web; many expect to be able to reach their therapists by e-mail. And already there is pressure from third party payers for providers to submit claims electronically. These technological breakthroughs have the potential to make mental health care more widely available and accessible, affordable, acceptable to patients, and adaptable to special needs. But many mental health professionals, as well as those who train them, are skeptical about integrating the new capabilities into their services and question the ethical and legal appropriateness of doing so. Those unfamiliar with the technologies tend to be particularly doubtful. How much e-mail contact with patients should I encourage or permit, and for what purposes? Why should I set up a Web site and how do I do so and what should I put on it? Should I refer patients to chat groups or Web-based discussion forums? Could video-conferencing be a helpful tool in some cases and what is involved? How do I avoid trouble if I dare to experiment with innovations? And last but not least, will the results of my experimentation be cost-effective? The book includes: an extensive overview of legal and regulatory issues, such as those raised by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA); concrete technical, ethical, and managerial suggestions summarized in a seven-step Online Consultation Risk Management model; and how to" resource lists and sample documents of use to beginners and experienced professionals alike. With a political career spanning nearly half a century, Tlesphore-Damien Bouchard was an advocate for progress in Quebec's history. He began his rise to the top in 1912 when he was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec for the city of Saint-Hyacinthe. He went on to become mayor of Saint-Hyacinthe for twenty-five years, Speaker of the House, Acting House Leader of the Liberal Party from 1936 to 1939 and finally, the most influential cabinet minister from 1939 to 1944. Bouchard emerged as one of the most powerful leaders of the Liberal Party. A leading anti-clerical who thought that the Catholic Church had no business in politics, the social sphere or public education, Bouchard became a beacon of light in the struggle for education reform, women's suffrage and workers' legislation. During the Depression, he introduced measures that relieved the misery of the poor and destitute, making Saint-Hyacinthe renowned for its management of the crisis. In this first-ever biography of Bouchard, author Frank Guttman touches on the politician's early life and explores how Bouchard's political attitudes developed. Muhidin Maalim Gurumo and Hassan Rehani Bitchuka are two of Tanzania’s most well-known singers in the popular music genre known as muziki wa dansi (literally, 'music for dancing'), a variation of the Cuban-based rhumba idiom that has been enormously impactful throughout central, eastern, and western Africa in the contemporary era. This interview-based dual biography investigates the lives and careers of these two men from an ethnomusicological and historical perspective. Gurumo had a career spanning fifty years before his death in 2014. Bitchuka has been singing professionally for forty-five years. The two singers, affectionately called mapacha (“the twins”) by their colleagues, worked together as partners for thirty years from 1973-2003. This study situates these exemplary individuals as creative agents in a local cultural context, showcasing interviews, narratives, and nostalgic reminiscences about musical life lived under Colonialism, state Socialism, and current politics in the global neoliberal democratic milieu. The book adds to a growing body of work about popular music in Dar es Salaam and shines a light on these artists’ creative processes, the choices they have made regarding rare resources, their styles and efficacy in conflict resolution, and their own memories regarding the musical art they have created.

Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: Metabolic reduction is the counterpart to oxidative pathways and plays an important role in the phase-I metabolism of carbonyl group bearing substances. Carbonyl reduction means the formation of a hydroxy group from a reactive aldehyde or ketone moiety and is generally regarded as an inactivation or detoxification step since the resulting alcohol is easier to conjugate and to eliminate. Not only are these carbonyl-containing compounds widespread in the environment and enter the body as xenobiotics and environmental pollutants, but they can also be generated endogenously through normal catabolic oxidation and deamination reactions. Many endogenous compounds such as biogenic amines, steroids, prostaglandins and other hormones are metabolized through carbonyl intermediates. In addition, lipid peroxidation within the cell results in the production of reactive carbonyls such as acrolein, 4-hydroxynonenal, 4-oxononenal and malon-dialdehyde, while oxidative damage to DNA generates base propenals. Dietary sources of carbonyl-containing compounds are diverse and include aldehydes found in fruits as well as the breakdown product of ethanol, acetaldehyde. Pharmacologic drugs represent further sources of exposure to carbonyl-containing compounds. From the pharmacologist s point of view, carbonyl reduction has been shown to be of significance in various inactivation processes of drugs bearing a carbonyl group. On the other hand, the carbinols formed may retain therapeutic potency, thus prolonging the pharmacodynamic effect of the parent drug, or, in some instances, a compound gains activity through carbonyl reduction. From the toxicologist s point of view, carbonyl reduction plays an important role in the toxification of drugs such as daunorubicin and doxorubicin (cf. chapter 4), whereas numerous reports corroborate the concept of carbonyl-reducing enzymes being involved in detoxification processes of endogenous and xenobiotic reactive carbonyl compounds. Compared with the oxidative cytochrome P450 (CYP) system, carbonyl-reducing enzymes had, for a long time, received considerably less attention. However, the advancement of carbonyl reductase molecular biology has allowed the identification and characterization of several carbonyl-reducing enzymes, including pluripotent hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases that are involved in xenobiotic carbonyl compound metabolism, in addition to catalyzing the oxidoreduction of their physiologic [...]

First, it provides a detailed introduction to nonlinear optical signals; starting from Glauber’s photon counting formalism, it establishes the diagrammatic formulation, which forms the backbone of nonlinear molecular spectroscopy. The main body of the thesis investigates the impact of quantum correlations in entangled photon states on two-photon transitions, with a particular focus on the time-energy uncertainty, which restricts the possible simultaneous time and frequency resolution in measurements. It found that this can be violated with entangled light for individual transitions. The thesis then presents simulations of possible experimental setups that could exploit this quantum advantage. The final chapter is devoted to an application of the rapidly growing field of multidimensional spectroscopy to trapped ion chains, where it is employed to investigate nonequilibrium properties in quantum simulations.
