The town of Hanover, chartered in 1761, began as a sleepy, idyllic community nestled in the Upper Connecticut River Valley. In 1770, noted Connecticut minister Eleazar Wheelock chose to relocate his school, Dartmouth College, to a virgin wilderness corner of the struggling young township. In spite of hardships, within several years Wheelock and his small college had taken root on the Hanover Plain, joining together with the local community that would come to be known as the Village at the College. Over the next two centuries, the college and the village would grow together in triumph and tragedy, rich in history and events, to become a special place revered by generations of alumni and residents alike.
Of the five Upper Connecticut River valley towns chartered by the royal governor of New Hampshire on July 4, 1761, the town of Hartford became the most diverse and pivotal within the region. Located at the intersection of the Connecticut and White River valleys, by the early 19th century Hartford played an important role in the development of river travel, as well as the turnpikes and stage lines crossing northern New England. By mid-century, White River Junction, one of Hartford's many diverse villages, was the region's most important railroad center. Within other areas of Hartford, abundant waterpower allowed for substantial development of manufacturing at Quechee, Dewey's Mills, Hartford Village, and Wilder. Like other towns in the Connecticut River valley, agriculture flourished in the town's rural areas. By the mid-20th century, two of the Northeast's most important new interstate highways crossed within Hartford's borders.

It is often a challenging and overwhelming transition to go from being a student to being a teacher. Many new faculty members of engineering and science have to make this dramatic transition in a very short time. This book sheds new light on the life and the influence of one of the most significant critical thinkers in psychology of the last century, Theodore R. Sarbin (1911-2005). In the first section authors provide a comprehensive account of Sarbin’s life and career. The second section consists in a collection of ten publications from the last two decades of his career. The essays cover topics such as the adoption of contextualism as the appropriate world view for psychology, the establishment of narrative psychology as a major mode of inquiry, and the rejection both mechanism and mentalism as suitable approaches for psychology. The book is historically informed and yet focused on the future of psychological theory and practice.
