On Saturday, Dan went down a law office located at San Gabriel with Mei. The female lawyer wearing a pair of glasses and was tall and slim, she handed them a few legal forms to sign, meantime the lawyer asked them, “Do you need to prepare a contract for provisions on how child and property will be handled after your divorce is settled?” They shook their heads and Mei echoed, “We don’t have our own property in the United States, our daughter will be taken care by her father financially and I trust him. You don’t need to write an agreement.” Mei glanced at Dan after she ended her answer, Dan nodded. “Okay, your case is pretty simple, I believe your dissolution of marriage will be approved by the court quickly,” said the lawyer. Soon they stood up to shake hand with the lawyer and then stepped out of the law office. Dan parked his car in the underground parking lot in the office building, Dan didn’t press the button of underground parking lot but the button of the first floor lobby after they entered into the elevator. “You pressed the wrong button,” Mei said and was reaching over to turn on the button of underground parking lot. Dan stopped her with his hand and echoed, “I didn’t press the wrong button, I would like to show you to a place outside this building.” “Where?” Mei asked. “When we get there, you will know, it is very close to this building.” After they walked out the office building, they turned right on the local street. In a couple of minutes, they stopped in front of a small gray building with different business signage attached over square windows. Mei followed him, and they entered into the building and were heading to the very end of the hallway on the first floor. They stopped in front of the unit and the entry door attached a sign “Petrel Travel Agency.” The door was left open, a couple of customers were seating there to talk with travel agents across them at the tables. “Why do you take me here?” Mei asked. Dan smiled and said, “Before you go back China, I want you to join a tour group to visit some sceneries in the East Coast.” “No, I don’t want to go, I’m not in a good mood to go.” “Please face the reality, at least you don’t have time to visit U.S. recent years once you go back China for your new position. Please take the last chance enjoying major scenic spots in the East Coast.” Dan’s repeated suggestions seemed to sway Mei, she checked the shelves by the wall, a number of tour brochures were lined on shelves. She skimmed different brochures but had no ideas where she should go. Dan had been checking these travel brochures carefully, he took each of these travel booklets to read its details. “This tour fits your schedule,” Dan handed one brochure to Mei. “This is a 5 day tour to the East Coast, the tour starts in New York city next Monday and you will visit Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston and Niagara Falls at Canada border. You will fly back LA next Friday.” Mei’s eyes turned to the booklet, “Let me see,” she took the brochure from Dan’s hand. Mei stared at the brochure for a few minutes and responded, “The tour looks good to fit my schedule.” Dan relaxed and echoed, “All right, I’ll book your tour now.” When one customer just left, Dan stepped forward and sat on the chair opposite a middle-age female travel agent. Mei sat on the other chair next to him. The agent looked up and asked, “How may I help you, Sir?” Dan took the brochure out of Mei’s hand and put it on the table, “Please help me book this tour.” The agent caught the brochure and glanced at it, “Okay, I still have the vacancy for the tour. Seifert fiberings extend the notion of fiber bundle mappings by allowing some of the fibers to be singular. Away from the singular fibers, the fibering is an ordinary bundle with fiber a fixed homogeneous space. The singular fibers are quotients of this homogeneous space by distinguished groups of homeomorphisms. These fiberings are ubiquitous and important in mathematics. This book describes in a unified way their structure, how they arise, and how they are classified and used in applications. Manifolds possessing such fiber structures are discussed and range from the classical three-dimensional Seifert manifolds to higher dimensional analogues encompassing, for example, flat manifolds, infra-nil-manifolds, space forms, and their moduli spaces. The necessary tools not covered in basic graduate courses are treated in considerable detail. These include transformation groups, cohomology of groups, and needed Lie theory. Inclusion of the Bieberbach theorems, existence, uniqueness, and rigidity of Seifert fiberings, aspherical manifolds, symmetric spaces, toral rank of spherical space forms, equivariant cohomology, polynomial structures on solv-manifolds, fixed point theory, and other examples, exercises and applications attest to the breadth of these fiberings. This is the first time the scattered literature on singular fiberings is brought together in a unified approach. The new methods and tools employed should be valuable to researchers and students interested in geometry and topology.

This book is based on four visits to China between 1971 and 1989 by Honda Katsuichi, an investigative journalist for Asahi Shimbun. His aim is to show in pitiless detail the horrors of the Japanese Army's seizure and capture of Nanjing in December 1937. Unvarnished accounts of the testimony - Chinese victims and Japanese perpetrators - to the rape and slaughter are juxtaposed with public relations announcements of the Japanese Army as printed in various Japanese newspapers of the time. The bland announcements of triumphant victories stand in bitter contrast to the atrocities that actually took place on the scene. The story unfolds with horrible detail as we watch the triumphant progress of the Japanese army whose troops were bent on rape and killing in the so-called "heat of battle." Yet by recalling the testimony of Japanese soldiers and reporters who were on the scene, as well as reproducing dispatches by Japanese Army authorities at the time, Honda makes it clear that the atrocities were part of a studied effort directed by the Japanese high command to impress the Chinese people with the power of its army and the folly of resistance to it - the estimate of 300,000 killed in these "military operations" is no exaggeratoin. Honda has worked with other Japanese journalists and scholars who have attempted to reveal the truth of the Nanjing massacre, provoked by the efforts of right-wing Japanese, including, sadly, many government officials, to whitewash the whole incident, even to the point of contending that a "massacre" never happened. This gripping account of the atrocities and cover-up joins other exposes - Chinese and now German - in keeping alive the memory of this shameful event.

Exotic Commodities is the first book to chart the consumption and spread of foreign goods in China from the mid-nineteenth century to the advent of communism in 1949. Richly illustrated and revealing, this volume recounts how exotic commodities were acquired and adapted in a country commonly believed to have remained "hostile toward alien things" during the industrial era. China was not immune to global trends that prized the modern goods of "civilized" nations. Foreign imports were enthusiastically embraced by both the upper and lower classes and rapidly woven into the fabric of everyday life, often in inventive ways. Scarves, skirts, blouses, and corsets were combined with traditional garments to create strikingly original fashions. Industrially produced rice, sugar, wheat, and canned food revolutionized local cuisine, and mass produced mirrors were hung on doorframes to ward off malignant spirits. Frank Dikötter argues that ordinary people were the least inhibited in acquiring these products and therefore the most instrumental in changing the material culture of China. Landscape paintings, door leaves, and calligraphy scrolls were happily mixed with kitschy oil paintings and modern advertisements. Old and new interacted in ways that might have seemed incongruous to outsiders but were perfectly harmonious to local people. This pragmatic attitude would eventually lead to China's own mass production and export of cheap, modern goods, which today can be found all over the world. The nature of this history raises the question, which Dikötter pursues in his conclusion: If the key to surviving in a fast-changing world is the ability to innovate, could China be more in tune with modernity than Europe?
