A pioneer and leader in providing education and opportunity to the Palmetto State's black population, South Carolina State University has created and sustained an academic tradition of excellence since its inception in 1896. Founded as the Colored, Normal, Industrial, Agricultural and Mechanical College of South Carolina, this historically black college has evolved over the decades to become one of the South's premier academic institutions. This volume, with over 200 black-and-white photographs, traces the institution's history from the college's first years under Thomas Miller to the present, under the guidance of Leroy Davis. Recording, in word and image, the academic traditions and eclectic campus activities over the past century, this unique pictorial retrospective touches upon many elements of the Bulldog experience, including early scenes of turn-of-the-century courses, such as cheese-making, tailoring, brick masonry, and beekeeping; photographs of various athletic teams over the years; and pictures of early campus organizations, like the college band, the New Farmers of America, and the first ROTC officers. However, college memories are not just shaped by coursework and extracurricular organizations, but are fondly remembered in the context of everyday life on campus, from the dormitories, such as Lowman, Manning, and Miller Halls, to historic academic buildings, like White and Wilkinson Halls, to two locations where students spent countless hours--Floyd Dining Hall and Miller F. Whittaker Library.
This book surveys the economy of Wales from the first Norman intrusions of 1067 to the Act of Union of England and Wales in 1536. Key themes include the evolution of the agrarian economy; the foundation and growth of towns; the adoption of a money economy; English colonisation and economic exploitation; the collapse of Welsh social structures and rise of economic individualism; the disastrous effect of the Glyndŵr rebellion; and, ultimately, the alignment of the Welsh economy to the English economy. Comprising four chapters, a narrative history is presented of the economic history of Wales, 1067–1536, and the final chapter tests the applicability in a Welsh context of the main theoretical frameworks that have been developed to explain long-term economic and social change in medieval Britain and Europe.
The third volume in the epic military aviation series focuses on the Allied invasion of North Africa during World War II. This work of WWII history takes us to November 1942 to explain the background of the first major Anglo-American venture: Operation Torch, the invasion of French North Africa. Describing the fratricidal combat that followed the initial landings in Morocco and Algeria, it then considers the unsuccessful efforts to reach northern Tunisia before the Germans and Italians could get there to forestall the possibility of an attack from the west on the rear of the Afrika Korps forces, then beginning their retreat from El Alamein. The six months of hard fighting that followed, as the Allies built up the strength of their joint air forces and gradually wrested control of the skies from the Axis, are recounted in detail. The continuing story of the Western Desert Air Force is told, as it advanced from the east to join hands with the units in the west. Also covered are the arrivals over the front of American pilots and crew, the P-38 Lightning, the Spitfire IX, and the B-17 Flying Fortress—and of the much-feared Focke-Wulf Fw 190. The aerial activities over Tunisia became one of the focal turning points of World War II, yet are frequently overlooked by historians. Here, the air-sea activities, the reconnaissance flights, and the growing day and night bomber offensives are examined in detail.
