Bobby Fischer Robert James 'Bobby' Fischer (1943-2008) was the eleventh World Chess Champion. In 1972 the American defeated the reigning World Champion at that time, Boris Spassky, in a very tense match. People still talk about this 'Cold War confrontation', which was known for its dramatic events. Fischer's road to the World title did not go unnoticed by Hollywood. On September 2015 the movie 'Pawn Sacrifice' was released in the United States. The movie is based on Bobby's Fischer's challenging of the top Soviet chess grandmasters during the Cold War, resulting in the clash with Spassky in 1972. In 1975, Fischer abdicated his title when an agreement could not be reached with FIDE, the World Chess Federation. After that he disappeared from the chess scene, but suddenly emerged to play a re-match against Boris Spassky in 1992. He won the match convincingly, although experts claimed he no longer had the strength of a World Champion. Again, after beating Spassky in a match, Fischer did not play (tournament) chess anymore. Fischer only hit the headlines for his controversial views and behavior outside the chessboard. During his career he was known for 'being different', but as time progressed his behavior became more and more strange. After 1992, for twelve years Fischer was on the run from the US government, which issued an arrest warrant against him for violating the UN sanctions and not paying his taxes. Eventually, Iceland granted him asylum in 2005. At the symbolic age of 64 Fischer died in a hospital in Reykjavik, the city where he had become World Champion. Bobby Fischer was one the greatest chess players of all time. He was renowned for his opening preparation, but probably most people will remember Fischer as the attacking player with a relentless will to win. Some typical Fischer quotes: "Chess is war over the board. The object is to crush the opponent's mind. I like the moment when I break a man's ego. You have to have the fighting spirit. You have to force moves and take chances." Another thing Fischer said was, "All that matters on the chessboard is good moves!" In this tactics training book you will get the opportunity to play the same good moves as Fischer did. This book offers you one hundred training exercises, in which Fischer turned the game in his favour. The puzzles start at a moderate level and gradually get more difficult. Good luck!

The widespread cult of the Mexican saint Nino Fidencio is based on faith healing performed by devotees who channel his powers. Nino Compadrito is an elegantly dressed skeleton of a child, whose miraculous powers are derived in part from an Andean belief in the power of the skull of one who has suffered a tragic death. Graziano draws upon site visits and extensive interviews with devotees, archival material, media reports, and documentaries to produce vivid portraits of these fascinating popular movements. In the process he sheds new light on the often fraught relationship between orthodox Catholicism and folk beliefs and on an important and little-studied facet of the dynamic culture of contemporary Spanish America.

This book re-evaluates a rich scientific heritage of space- and history-sensitive development theories and produces an integrated methodology for the comparative analysis of urban and regional trajectories within a globalized world. The main argument put forward is that current mainstream analyses of urban and regional development have forgotten this rich heritage and fail to address the connections between different dimensions of development, the role of history and the importance of place and scale relations. The proposed methodology integrates elements from different theories – radical economic geography, regulation approach, cultural political economy, old and new institutionalism – that all share a strong concern with time and space dynamics. They are recombined into an interdisciplinary (meta)theoretical framework, capable of articulating the overall problem of socio-economic development and providing methodological anchors for comparative case-study analysis, while recognizing context specificities. The analytical methodology focuses on key dynamics and relations, such as strategic agency and collective action, institutions and structures, culture and discourse, as well as the tension between path-dependency and path-shaping. The methodology is then applied to eight urban and regional cases, mostly from Western Europe, but also from the United States and China. The case studies confirm the relevance of time- and space-sensitive analysis, not only for understanding development trajectories, but also for policy making. They ultimately highlight that, while post-war institutions were able to address systemic contradictions and foster a relatively inclusive development model, the neoliberal turn has led to reductionist policies that not only have resulted in an increase in social and spatial inequalities, but have also undermined growth and democracy.

Virginity, austerity, eucharistic devotion, incessant mortification, and mystical marriage to Christ characterized the devotional regimen that structured St. Rose's entire life. Many of her mystical practices echo the symptoms of such modern psychological disorders as masochism, depression, hysteria, and anorexia nervosa. Graziano offers a sophisticated argument not only for the origins and meaning of these behaviors in Rose's case, but also for the reason her culture venerated them as signs of sanctity. In the process he explores a wide range of themes, from the idea of suffering as an expression of love to the assimilation of childhood trauma through religious repetition. Graziano also offers a penetrating analysis of the politics of Rose's canonization. He finds that her mystical union with God--bypassing the institutional channels of sacrament and priestly mediation--was inherently subversive to the bureaucratized Church. Canonization was a cooptation by which Rose's competing claim to Christ was integrated into the Catholic canon. The eroticized suffering of many mystics is shown to be very human in origin: the mystic's wounded love is projected onto a God conceived to accommodate it.
