Mathematical models are being used more and more widely to study complex dynamic systems (global weather, ecological systems, hydrological systems, nuclear reactors etc. including the specific subject of this book, crop-soil systems). The models are important aids in understanding, predicting and managing these systems. Such models are complex and imperfect. One fundamental research direction is to seek a better understanding of how these systems function, and to propose mathematical expressions embodying that understanding. However, this is not sufficient. It is also essential to have tools (often mathematical and statistical methods) to aid in developing, improving and using the models built from those equations. A photographic survey of the robotic face of Tokyo buildings and an argument that robot aesthetics plays a central role in architectural history. In Tokyoids, architect François Blanciak surveys the robotic faces omnipresent in Tokyo buildings, offering an architectural taxonomy based not on the usual variables—size, material, historical style—but on the observable expressions of buildings. Are the eyes (windows) twinkling, the mouth (door) laughing? Is that balcony a howl of distress? Investigating robot aesthetics through his photographs of fifty buildings, Blanciak argues that the robot face originated in architecture—before the birth of robotics—and has played a central role in architectural history. Blanciak first puts the robot face into historical perspective, examining the importance of the face in architectural theory and demonstrating that the construction of architecture’s emblematic portraits triggered the emergence of a robot aesthetics. He then explores the emotions conveyed by the photographed buildings’ robot faces, in chapters titled “Awe,” “Wrath,” “Mirth,” “Pain,” “Angst,” and “Hunger.” As he does so he considers, among other things, the architectural relevance of Tokyo’s ordinary buildings; the repression of the figural in contemporary architecture; an aesthetic of dismemberment, linked to the structure of the Japanese language and local building design; and the influence of automation technology upon human interaction. Francois Nouvion is well known collector and author of operatic subjects. He was born in Zurich and is a US citizen. He studied at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and at Stanford University in Palo Alto. He worked mostly in the semiconductor testing equipment fi eld and sold US Equipment from Russia to Tokyo. Early on he became very interested in Opera and developed his knowledge in singing from the reissues by Guy Dumazert. He currently maintains a comprehensive website on tenors (historicaltenors.com) and a YouTube channel on Historical tenors. Although his interest on Irish-French tenor John O`Sullivan dates from his early days, he fi nally started researching the tenor`s career in the early 90s after meeting O’Sullivan’s children: Jacques, Colette and Raymonde. After much work contacting the different libraries all over the world, with the Paris and Marseilles libraries being the most diffi cult to work with, he fi nally started writing the O`Sullivan biography in 2007. It is now published. He only regrets that Jacques O’Sullivan, the tenor`s son, did not live to witness the publication.
Distant galaxies encapsulate the various stages of galaxy evolution and formation from over 95% of the development of the universe. As early as twenty-five years ago, little was known about them, however since the first systematic survey was completed in the 1990s, increasing amounts of resources have been devoted to their discovery and research. This book summarises for the first time the numerous techniques used for observing, analysing, and understanding the evolution and formation of these distant galaxies.In this rapidly expanding research field, this text is an every-day companion handbook for graduate students and active researchers. It provides guidelines in sample selection, imaging, integrated spectroscopy and 3D spectroscopy, which help to avoid the numerous pitfalls of observational and analysis techniques in use in extragalactic astronomy. It also paves the way for establishing relations between fundamental properties of distant galaxies. At each step, the reader is assisted with numerous practical examples and ready-to-use methodology to help understand and analyse research.François Hammer worked initially in general relativity and made the first modelling of gravitational lenses prior to their spectroscopic confirmation. Following this, he became co-leader of the first complete survey of distant galaxies, the Canada-France-Redshift Survey. This led to the discovery of the strong decrease of the cosmic star formation density measured from UV light as z=1, which, alongside Hector Flores, they confirmed as bolometric and dust independent. With Mathieu Puech, they then pioneered the 3D spectroscopy of distant galaxies, leading to a major increase of understanding of the dynamic state of distant galaxies evidenced by the scatter of the Tully-Fisher relation. This led them to propose, with the addition to the team of Myriam Rodrigues, that galactic disks may survive or be rebuilt in gas-rich mergers, a scenario that is consistent with contemporary cosmological simulations. Besides extensive observational experience, the authors have led, or are leading, several instruments implemented or to be implemented at the largest telescopes, including VLT/Giraffe, VLT/X-shooter, VLT/MOONS and E-ELT/MOSAIC. They have also developed several observational techniques in adaptive optics, and in sky subtraction for integral field units and fibre instruments.
Originally published in 1828, Fran√ßois Ren√(c) de Chateaubriand's 2-volume Travels in America and Italy is an important literary travel narrative written by a leading (some would say founding) figure of French Romanticism. Chateaubriand traveled to America in 1791 to escape the volatile atmosphere of Revolutionary France. While some doubt has been raised as to whether he actually traveled to all the areas he claimed, (discrepancies in his descriptions of flora and fauna, lead scholars to believe that Chateaubriand did not travel to the Mississippi River, Florida, Alabama, or to Louisiana, as implied by his writing) Chateaubriand's lush descriptions of nature, particularly that of the sparsely populated landscape of the American South, place this work at the forefront of the French Romantic tradition, strongly impacting leading writers and thinkers of the time. Moral and intellectual concerns are explored throughout the work, for example in the Preface that contains his theories of geographical science and the history of travel. The Michigan model, named after the institution where it was first articulated, has been used to explain voting behavior in North American and Western European democracies. In Latin American Elections, experts on Latin America join with experts on electoral studies to evaluate the model’s applicability in this region. Analyzing data from the AmericasBarometer, a scientific public opinion survey carried out in 18 Latin American nations from 2008 to 2012, the authors find that, like democratic voters elsewhere, Latin Americans respond to long-term forces, such as social class, political party ties, and political ideology while also paying attention to short-term issues, such as the economy, crime, corruption. Of course, Latin Americans differ from other Americans, and among themselves. Voters who have experienced left-wing populism may favor government curbs on freedom of expression, for example, while voters enduring high levels of economic deprivation or instability tend to vote against the party in power. The authors thus conclude that, to a surprising extent, the Michigan model offers a powerful explanatory model for voting behavior in Latin America.

The trajectories of pollution in global capitalism, from the toxic waste of early tanneries to the poisonous effects of pesticides in the twentieth century. Through the centuries, the march of economic progress has been accompanied by the spread of industrial pollution. As our capacities for production and our aptitude for consumption have increased, so have their byproducts—chemical contamination from fertilizers and pesticides, diesel emissions, oil spills, a vast “plastic continent” found floating in the ocean. The Contamination of the Earth offers a social and political history of industrial pollution, mapping its trajectories over three centuries, from the toxic wastes of early tanneries to the fossil fuel energy regime of the twentieth century. The authors describe how, from 1750 onward, in contrast to the early modern period, polluted water and air came to be seen as inevitable side effects of industrialization, which was universally regarded as beneficial. By the nineteenth century, pollutants became constituent elements of modernity. The authors trace the evolution of these various pollutions, and describe the ways in which they were simultaneously denounced and permitted. The twentieth century saw new and massive scales of pollution: chemicals that resisted biodegradation, including napalm and other defoliants used as weapons of war; the ascendancy of oil; and a lifestyle defined by consumption. In the 1970s, pollution became a political issue, but efforts—local, national, and global—to regulate it often fell short. Viewing the history of pollution though a political lens, the authors also offer lessons for the future of the industrial world.

Renal sonography forms a basic part of routine diagnostic strategy. This textbook summarizes eighteen years of experience in diagnostic ultrasound. We want it to serve as a guide to both imagers and mere consumers of information. That is why we shall emphasize practical advice and diagnostic pitfalls; it is also why we shall often deal with the relations of sonography with other diagnostic procedures, which it may complement or replace, precede or follow, the purpose being to achieve efficiency at low cost. We shall limit our subject matter to the kidney itself and the neighboring retroperitoneal compartments, dealing only briefly with the lower urinary tract, which requires specialized procedures. We devoted considerable space to renal sonography in our book Clinical Atlas of Ultrasonic Radiography, published in 1973. Since then, nothing has changed and everything has changed. Nothing, because even then the differential diagnosis between a solid and a cystic mass, the etiologic diagnosis of a nonsecreting kidney, and the positive diagnosis of a traumatic juxtarenal hematoma were quite reliable, making possible drastic reductions in the indications for instrumental roentgenologic examinations. Everything, be cause improved resolution and grey scale imaging (already partially achieved in 1973, thanks to real time) have profoundly refined both anatomic and pathologic ultrasonic studies. And now high resolution real time imaging has revolutionized renal examination techniques, whereas Doppler is entering routine ultrasonic diagnosis.
