Much of the evolutionary biology that has grabbed headlines in recent years has sprung from the efforts of sociobiologists and evolutionary psychologists to explain sexual features and behavior--even differences between how men and women think--as evolutionary adaptations. They have looked to the forces of natural selection to explain everything from the mimicry of male mockingbirds to female orgasms among humans. In this controversial book, Richard Francis argues that the utility of this approach is greatly exaggerated. He proposes instead a powerful alternative rooted in the latest findings in evolutionary biology as well as research on the workings of our brains, genes, and hormones. Exploring various sexual phenomena, Francis exposes fundamental defects in sociobiology and evolutionary psychology, which he traces to their misguided emphasis on "why" questions at the expense of "how" questions. Francis contends that this preoccupation with "why" questions (such as, "Why won't men ask for directions"?) results in a paranoiac mindset and distorted evolutionary explanations. His alternative framework entails a broader conception of what constitutes an evolutionary explanation, one in which both evolutionary history, as embodied in the tree of life, and developmental processes are brought to the foreground. This alternative framework is also better grounded in basic biology. Deeply learned, consistently persuasive, and always engaging, this book is a welcome antidote to simplistic sociobiological exegeses of animal and human behavior.

During the 1970s ultrasonography developed along different paths in continental Eu rope and the English-speaking world. Whereas static imaging dominated the United Kingdom and North America, real-time examination performed by physicians was the norm in the Federal Republic of Germany and France. Francis Weill was uniquely able to bridge the gap between the two schools since he employed both techniques extensively. He made many important contributions to ab dominal ultrasonography during that decade, including the first descriptions of peri pancreatic vascular anatomy, the sonographic diagnostic features of obstructive jaun dice, and the localization of intraperitoneal fluid collections. During the past 20 years he has been working on an evolving textbook of gastroin testinal ultrasonography. This edition in English is the latest fruit of that effort. There are many textbooks of ultrasonography but very few are the work of a single author with a systematic, consistent, and thoroughly organized approach. Moreover, a work that has been crafted and refined by 20 years of clinical experience is certainly unique in this field. My relationship to this book began with the first English edition which I helped to translate from French. The current volume is a revised version of the most recent French edition, a book that we have found to be an invaluable reference in our de partment of radiological ultrasound for anyone who can manage a bit of French. The main theme of Part B is the description of synthetically useful reactions and the illustration of their application. We have attempted to update the material to reflect the most important advances in synthetic methodology. Because of the extensive developments in the use of organic derivatives of transition metals, as well as of silicon and tin, we have separated the organometallic material into three chapters. Chapter 7 emphasizes organolithium and organomagnesium chemistry and also considers the group lIB metals. Transition metal chemistry is discussed in Chapter 8, with emphasis on copper and palladium intermediates. In Chapter 9, the carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions of organoboranes, silanes, and stannanes are discussed. The increased importance of free-radical reactions in synthesis has led to the incorporation of a section on radical reactions into Chapter 10, in which carbocations, carbenes, and nitrenes are also discussed. Certainly a major advance in synthetic chemistry during the 1980s was the development of methods for enantioselective synthesis. We have increased the level of attention to stereochemistry in the discussion of many reactions. In areas in which new stereoselective methods have been well developed, such as in aldol condensa tions, hydroboration, catalytic reduction, and epoxidation, we discuss these methods. The final chapter discusses some of the general issues which must be addressed in multistep synthesis and provides some illustrative syntheses which can provide the basis for more detailed study of this aspect of synthetic chemistry.

This essay challenges several patterns of thinking common in twentieth-century linguistics. The most pervasive of these is our habit of looking at language from the point of view of the speaker. When we take, instead, that of the hearer, matters fall into place in a new way. In syntax, we are led to examine the evidence available to hearers for interpreting what they hear, and this reveals both the true nature and the locus existendi of deep structure. Chomsky's 1957 diagnosis of the then prevalent syntactic theory is upheld, though his proposed remedy is not. The principle of Gestalt perception yields a characterization of the word quite different from Bloomfield's classic definition, lending support of new kind to Pike's mid-century views of the relation between phonemics and grammar. In morphology, assuming the hearer's standpoint forces the abondonment of the atomic morpheme that has prevailed in America since the post-Bloomfieldians, together with much of classical morphophonemics, and by a domino effect this in turn undermines much of generative phonology.

One deep problem facing the Catholic church is the question of how its teaching authority is understood today. It is fairly clear that, while Rome continues to teach as if its authority were unchanged from the days before Vatican II (1962-65), the majority of Catholics - within the first-world church, at least - take a far more independent line, and increasingly understand themselves (rather than the church) as the final arbiters of decision-making, especially on ethical questions. This collection of essays explores the historical background and present ecclesial situation, explaining the dramatic shift in attitude on the part of contemporary Catholics in the U.S. and Europe. The overall purpose is neither to justify nor to repudiate the authority of the church's hierarchy, but to cast some light on: the context within which it operates, the complexities and ambiguities of the historical tradition of belief and behavior it speaks for, and the kinds of limits it confronts - consciously or otherwise. The authors do not hope to fix problems, although some of the essays make suggestions, but to contribute to a badly needed intra-Catholic dialogue without which, they believe, problems will continue to fester and solutions will remain elusive.

School violence is a significant social concern. To better understand its sources, a comprehensive meta-analysis of the school violence and victimization literature was undertaken. Across 761 studies, the relative effects of 30 different individual, school, and community level correlates were assessed (8,790 effect size estimates). Violence and victimization were conceptualized broadly to include various forms of aggression and crime at school. The results revealed that the strongest correlates of school violence perpetration were antisocial behavior, deviant peers, antisocial attitudes, victimization, and peer rejection; and that the strongest correlates of school victimization were prior/other victimization, social competence, risk avoidance, antisocial behavior, and peer rejection. Extracurricular activities and school security devices had among the weakest associations in the meta-analysis, and several traditional criminological predictors did not perform well in the school context. We conclude with recommendations for theory, future research, and policy.
