With more than 180 films during a career spanning several decades, Jesus Franco (1930-2013) was an extraordinarily prolific and chameleon-like Spanish director, covering virtually every genre from horror to film noir, adventure and erotic, and adapting to all kinds of productions. A one-of-a-kind filmmaker, he was boldly original in the themes, style, and in his idea of cinema. This book examines his life and career between his first short film to the moment he cut his ties with his home country and became an "international" director, with a detailed production history and critical analysis of his films, placing his work within the social and political context of Spanish culture, politics, and cinema. Franco's most critically praised works are covered, namely such cult horror classics as The Awful Dr. Orlof and The Diabolical Dr. Z, as well as his working relationship with Orson Welles, whom he was to direct in a 1964 unfinished adaptation of Treasure Island. High levels of economic policy uncertainty in various parts of the world revamped the de- bate about its impact on economic activity. With increasingly stronger economic, financial, and political ties among countries, economic agents have more reasons to be vigilant of for- eign economic policy. Employing heterogeneous panel structural vector autoregressions, this paper tests for spillovers from economic policy uncertainty on other countries' economic ac- tivity. Furthermore, using local projections, the paper zooms in on shocks originating in the United States, Europe, and China. Our results suggest that economic policy uncertainty re- duces growth in real output, private consumption, and private investment, and that spillovers from abroad account for about two-thirds of the negative effect. Moreover, uncertainty in the United States, Europe, and China reduces economic activity in the rest of the world, with the effects being mostly felt in Europe and the Western Hemisphere.

Through an historical and philological lens, this book explores passages from Dante's Commedia which reveal elements inspired byprocessions, pageants, liturgical drama, psalm singing, or dance performance. The sacred poem finds influence in medieval theories of the performing arts as well as actual performances which Dante would have seen in churches or town squares. Dante's Performance opens a new perspective from which to consider the Commedia: Dante expected his contemporary readers to recognize references to and echoes of psalms, sacred plays, and performative practices. Twenty-first-century readers are tasked with reconstructing a cultural framework which allows us to grasp those same textual references. From the dramatization of the harrowing of hell in Inferno IX, to Beatrice's celebratory return on top of Mount Purgatory, to the songs of the blessed, this study connects Dante's language to coeval theoretical and practical texts about performance. If hell is "the Middle Age's theatrum diaboli," purgatory stages a performed purification through songs and acting, while paradise offers the spectacle of blessed spirits within the heavenly spheres as an aid to human understanding (Par. This book explores the consumption behaviour of ‘extreme’ athletes from a quantitative perspective. Extreme sports are a multi-billion-dollar industry. The behaviour of athletes who participate in them differs from the majority of consumers in that they voluntarily seek out risky and dangerous situations that other consumers actively avoid. It has therefore been suggested that these consumer-athletes may have a unique psychology in this regard. The book adopts a novel approach based on established psychological theories concerning the behaviour of extreme individuals, applying and translating them into marketing research and practice. It discusses how specific psychological drivers impact the consumption behaviour of consumer-athletes and a variety of marketing-relevant outcomes. By demonstrating that extreme consumers are characterized by a unique psychology that leads them to act and think differently, this book offers scholars deeper insights into consumer behaviour, while also helping practitioners target this lucrative marketing segment more effectively.
Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374), one of the greatest of Italian poets, was also the leading spirit in the Renaissance movement to revive ancient Roman language and literature. Just as Petrarch's Latin epic Africa imitated Virgil and his compendium On Illustrious Men was inspired by Livy, so Petrarch's four Invectives were intended to revive the eloquence of the great Roman orator Cicero. The Invectives are directed against the cultural idols of the Middle Ages--against scholastic philosophy and medicine and the dominance of French culture in general. They defend the value of literary culture against obscurantism and provide a clear statement of the values of Renaissance humanism. This volume provides a new critical edition of the Latin text based on the two autograph copies, and the first English translation of three of the four invectives. Remote Vision contains an English-Italian bilingual version of the most significant works in poetry and conceptual writing produced so far by Alessandro De Francesco. It is both a self-standing, coherent book and the most exhaustive collection of his poetry ever published in any language; containing a new version of the 2008 book Objects Displaced, the complete 2010 book Redefinition, the composite and still partially unpublished Cistern, the prose Foreign Body in Ascending Motion and the very recent work Inhabited Spaces. All the sections were rearranged for this publication by the author who decided that each section contain the complete English text followed by the complete Italian version, avoiding a face to face translation in order not to interrupt the flow of the reading. The whole book was beautifully translated by poets and Brown University alumni Belle Cushing and Dusty Neu, under the coordination of the acclaimed poet and Comparative Literature scholar Forrest Gander. This book condenses and proposes under a new light all the conceptual and emotional intensity of Alessandro De Francesco's poetry.

The Tribe, the companion volume to Ralph Rumney's excellent The Consul is another fascinating slice of history concerning the ultra avant-garde's favourite sect. Jean-Michel Mension was a member of the Situationist International's precursor, the less political and more art focussed Lettrist International (which was founded in 1945 in Paris by the Romanian Jean-Isidore Isou as a reaction to Andre Breton's dictatorial control of the surrealist movement). Surrealism had become something of a cult of personality surrounding Breton and had drifted from its dada origins into mysticism. In 1956 at Alba in Italy a group of lettrists took an active part at the First World Congress of Liberated Artists (with the slogan "The International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus"). From June 1954 to November 1957 they published 29 numbers of their journal Potlatch. The last issue, formally indicating the direction the LI had been heading was subtitled "Bulletin d'information de l'internationale situationiste". The SI was soon to be born. In a series of interviews, Jean-Michel Mension recalls drunken philosophising with Guy Debord and his circle in a book beautifully filled with Ed van der Elsken's celebrated photographs of "the tribe" accompanied by reproductions of Lettrist leaflets and posters. When he woke from his "long night of drinking" Mension became a militant of the Ligue Communiste while the SI became a continuing source of inspiration for the non-authoritarian left. The tensions in the avant-garde where real enough it seems and this is a fascinating, if tangential, account of them. --George Bowman
