The racism and antisemitism of Fascist Italy have often been described as ‘mild’, ‘cultural’, ‘spiritual’, and essentially non-violent, especially in comparison with the racial ideology of Nazi Germany. This book challenges this simplistic interpretation with a thorough analysis of the texts and images of the magazine La Difesa della razza (Defence of the race), the principal public voice of Fascist biological racism, which appeared fortnightly between 1938 and 1943 under the editorship of Telesio Interlandi, Mussolini’s ‘unofficial mouthpiece’, with governmental financial support. A negative icon of the propaganda of Fascist racism, La Difesa della razza first appeared in August 1938 shortly before the passing of Italy’s Racial Laws, but had a long gestation. It was the expression of a Fascist cultural milieu – journalists, writers, artists, and architects – headed by Interlandi, whose racism and antisemitism dated back to the end of the First World War. By placing the magazine’s emergence in this longer timescale, and exploring the interrelationships of political action, ideological discourse, and imagery, this book also demonstrates how the project of ‘anthropological revolution’ – building the New Man – was a central element of Italian Fascism, from the very beginning to the deportation of Italian Jews. This new English edition has been thoroughly revised and updated.

This second edition adds 46 new problems, for a total of 203. The solutions to certain “old” problems have been revised for improved clarity, in response to questions and comments from our students (second-year students in the Master’s in Physics program). Each problem is given a title indicating its relation to the various areas of physics or technology. By tackling the problems presented here, students are gently introduced to advanced topics such as unipolar and homopolar motors, magnetic monopoles, radiation pressure, angular momentum of light, bulk and surface plasmons, and radiation friction. We also address a number of tricky concepts and apparent ambiguities and paradoxes encountered in the classical theory of electromagnetism, with a particular focus on conservation laws and transformation properties between different frames of reference. At the same time, the book can be used as an introduction to applications of classical electromagnetism including cutting-edge topics like plasmonics, metamaterials, and light-driven propulsion. While unnecessary mathematical complexity is avoided, the new edition also provides a few introductory examples concerning elegant and powerful solution techniques. The narration of humankind’s past, that is to say its history, has up to now been done using the extrinsic method of geographic territorial reference and temporal chronological and local topical reference, sometimes together, sometimes separately, almost to form a single expression or two different expressions: two approaches in which to insert the list (quantitative or selective or explicative or annotated) of human events. And it is to this that I address myself at first, before going on to examine the possibility of using a third approach to history, with the choice of intrinsic historical values to highlight.

Three times a year, Neapolitans gather to witness the recurring phenomenon of the liquefaction of San Gennaro’s blood. From the seventeenth century to the present, crowds have prayed to the city’s patron for protection from fires, earthquakes, plagues, droughts, and the fury of Mt. Vesuvius. In the “miraculous” moment of transposition from solid to liquid, the faithful seek respite from the ills of the world in the saintly blood, a visual reminder of the blood of Christ spilled for their salvation. In Naples, the periodical liquefaction of San Gennaro’s blood is not officially recognized as miraculous by the Catholic Church, which now more cautiously refers to it as a prodigy. Nevertheless, for centuries, this phenomenon has been called “a miracle” in liturgical texts approved by the ecclesiastical authority and in the words of bishops, cardinals, popes, and saints. However, not everyone agreed.
