Benvenuto Olivieri was a Florentine banker active in Rome during the first half of the sixteenth century. A self made man without any great family patrimony, he rose to prominence during the pontificate of Pope Paul III, becoming involved with a variety of papal enterprises which allowed him to get to the heart of the mechanisms governing the papal finances. Amassing a considerable fortune along the way, Olivieri soon built himself a role as co-ordinator of the appalti (revenue farms) and became one of the most powerful players in the complex network that connected bankers and the papal revenue. This book explores the indissoluble link that had developed between the papacy and bankers, illuminating how the Apostolic Chamber, increasingly in need of money, could not meet its debts, without farming out the rights to future income. Utilising documents from a rich corpus of unpublished sources in Florence and Rome, Guidi Bruscoli unravels the web of financial connections that bound together Florentine and Genoese bankers with the papacy, and looks at how money was raised and the appalti managed.
This book examines Naples’s patron saint, Gennaro, the history of his blood relic, and the mystery of its periodical liquefaction. Three times a year, Neapolitans gather to witness the recurring phenomenon of the liquefaction of San Gennaro’s blood. From the seventeenth century to the present, crowds have prayed to the city’s patron for protection from fires, earthquakes, plagues, droughts, and the fury of Mt. Vesuvius. In the “miraculous” moment of transposition from solid to liquid, the faithful seek respite from the ills of the world in the saintly blood, a visual reminder of the blood of Christ spilled for their salvation. In Naples, the periodical liquefaction of San Gennaro’s blood is not officially recognized as miraculous by the Catholic Church, which now more cautiously refers to it as a prodigy. Nevertheless, for centuries, this phenomenon has been called “a miracle” in liturgical texts approved by the ecclesiastical authority and in the words of bishops, cardinals, popes, and saints. However, not everyone agreed. This volume follows the efforts of theologians, alchemists, charlatans, and scientists who, through the centuries, have tried to answer questions such as: Is the liquefaction of San Gennaro’s blood really a miracle? If not, how is it possible to explain a phenomenon that occurs only on dates liturgically relevant to the saint? How did his Sleeping Cupid (1608) end up on the island of Lampedusa, at the heart of the Mediterranean migrant crisis? And why was his painting The Seven Works of Mercy (1607) requested for display at a number of humanitarian public events? After critical reflection on these significant transfers of Caravaggio’s work, Francesco Zucconi takes Baroque art as a point of departure to guide readers through some of the most haunting and compelling images of our time. Each chapter analyzes a different form of media and explores a problem that ties together art history and humanitarian communications: from Caravaggio’s attempt to represent life itself as a subject of painting to the way bodies and emotions are presented in NGO campaigns. A virtuoso violinist, conductor, composer, and a professor of mathematics and botany, Francesco Galeazzi (1758–1819) firmly believed that musical education should be clear, demonstrable, and practical. In recent years, studies by both industry and academic researchers have opened the door to improving performance and reducing costs of these new materials. The particular structure and morphology of LCPs, as well as their peculiar rheological behavior, have stimulated researchers to develop new theoretical models and new characterization and processing techniques to more fully understand and utilize LCPs. Although the scientific literature is very rich in data on the synthetic techniques and on the relations between structure and phase behavior of these new polymers, the understanding of the rheological and processing aspects is still far from satisfactory-particularly in the case of LCP blends. In fact, although an appreciable number of patents and scientific papers have appeared describing the phase behavior, the rheology, and the mechanical properties of many of these polyblends, several aspects of the relations between processing and morphology, and between morphology and properties of these materials are still obscure or even controversial. The First World War brought with it enormous ideological, political and social problems. In Russia, as in Italy, the repercussions of the war were soon felt, and the two countries saw the birth of oppositional movements within them. In Russia, these movements grasped power thanks to a Bolshevik coup, while in Italy Mussolini founded the Fasci di combattimento, a real militia ready to ride the popular discontent with the “mutilated victory”, specifically the dissatisfaction with territories promised by the Treaty of London and not granted to Italy. Relations between these two countries were interrupted for several years and were resumed only when both realized that the economic advantages that could result from resuming relations would be far more beneficial than continuing their ideological confrontation. However, mutual distrust never stopped and rendered bilateral relations increasingly tenuous until they were definitely severed in the early years of the Second World War.

In this study on the subject of the Spanish courtly gentleman of the sixteenth century, the author traces the courtly gentlemans life ideals as they appear first in Montalvos Amadis de Gaula and later in Il Cortegiano of Castiglione. The study also appraises what new perspectives and attitudes are at the center of Castigliones view of cortegiania and how these elements are reflected in other Spanish courtesy books subsequent to The Courtiers arrival and publication in Spain. In the last part of the book, the author deals with the theme of courtliness in Don Quixote and with Cervantess attitude toward the courtiers pursuits, aspirations, and lifestyle. He also analyzes, through the study of selected works of Caldern and Gracin, certain problems of self-perception, moral conscience, and outlook that distinguish the ideal man of the baroque age, as envisioned by these authors, from his renaissance counterpart. On the whole, the study points to the gradual change and process of secularization of the courtiers ideal during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and to the decline of traditional thought and myths about class limitations and human potential.
Through an historical and philological lens, this book explores passages from Dante's Commedia which reveal elements inspired byprocessions, pageants, liturgical drama, psalm singing, or dance performance. The sacred poem finds influence in medieval theories of the performing arts as well as actual performances which Dante would have seen in churches or town squares. Dante's Performance opens a new perspective from which to consider the Commedia: Dante expected his contemporary readers to recognize references to and echoes of psalms, sacred plays, and performative practices.
