This is an engineering book. However, it is a kind of engineering that is not well known by the general public: namely Applied Petroleum Engineering. It reflects our expertise in offshore well construction and the advanced know-how we achieved in Brazil, a long time before the euphoria caused by the discovery of the famous Pre-Salt reserves in 2005. We talk about the professionals who, for the most part, work on offshore drilling rigs, internationally known as Company Men. The Company Man’s work is unique, exciting and very important, especially when we see Brazilian creativity strongly contributing to the implementation of various achievements. It is not enough to be the “almighty” specialist of multinational companies when on board, the true light, the guiding light of the crew - for having a much more holistic knowledge of the activities in progress - but also to act with the humility of those who know that they will influence and motivate teams and establish with certainty that all their members are of fundamental importance for carrying out operations and achieving the well construction goals safely. The purpose of this book is to introduce to the new generations of engineers a brief idea of the fascinating world of Company Men, covering their daily lives on board and detailing several operations, equipment, and technical terms with which they must be familiar. In addition to many descriptions throughout the text, a Glossary is provided to define some terms in greater detail. We hope to captivate these young people and encourage them to continue a tradition: Brazil today is one of the most important players in the worldwide offshore industry, and holds its place at the knowledge frontline, not only due to its widely diversified operational scenarios but also, in large part, due to the technological and procedural solutions developed by Brazilians. This “heartbreaking biography” of the Communist revolutionary “is filled with high drama,” daring escapes, and eventual imprisonment in Nazi Germany (Publishers Weekly). A German-born Jew, Olga Benario was one of the most remarkable Communist activists of the twentieth century. With a genius for organization and an unwavering devotion, she crisscrossed the globe educating and activating legions to combat the worldwide plagues of Nazism and fascism. At the age of nineteen, she masterminded a daring prison raid to free her lover, the Communist intellectual Otto Braun. Together they escaped to Moscow, where they quickly rose in the ranks of the international Communist movement. At twenty-six, Benario was chosen to serve as bodyguard to the legendary Brazilian guerrilla leader Luis Carlos Prestes, who had been brought to Moscow for training and would soon become her new lover. Traveling under assumed names, they crossed Europe and North America to reach Brazil, where Prestes would launch a revolution against the fascist regime. But tragically, within months, they were seized by police. From Brazil, Olga, then seven months pregnant, was deported to Nazi Germany. She was subsequently sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp, and in February 1942 she was sent to her death in the gas chambers at Bernburg.

Some of the most compelling theoretical debates in the humanities today center on representations of sexuality. This volume is the first to focus on the topic -- in particular, the connections between nationhood, sex, and gender -- in the Lusophone, or Portuguese-speaking, world. Written by prominent scholars in Brazilian, Portuguese, and Lusophone African literary and cultural studies, the essays range across multiple discourses and cultural expressions, historical periods and theoretical approaches to offer a uniquely comprehensive perspective on the issues of sex and sexuality in the literature and culture of the Portuguese-speaking world that extends from Portugal to Brazil to Angola, Cape Verde, and Mozambique. Through the critical lenses of gay and lesbian studies, queer theory, postcolonial studies, feminist theory, and postmodern theory, the authors consider the work of such influential literary figures as Clarice Lispector and Silviano Santiago. An important aspect of the volume is the publication of a newly discovered-and explicitly homoerotic -- poem by Fernando Pessoa, published here for the first time in the original Portuguese and in English translation. Chapters take up questions of queer performativity and activism, female subjectivity and erotic desire, the sexual customs of indigenous versus European Brazilians, and the impact of popular music (as represented by Caetano Veloso and others) on interpretations of gender and sexuality. Challenging static notions of sexualities within the Portuguese-speaking world, these essays expand our understanding of the multiplicity of differences and marginalized subjectivities that fall under the intersections of sexuality,gender, and race.
