Low Power Analog CMOS for Cardiac Pacemakers proposes new techniques for the reduction of power consumption in analog integrated circuits. Our main example is the pacemaker sense channel, which is representative of a broader class of biomedical circuits aimed at qualitatively detecting biological signals. The first and second chapters are a tutorial presentation on implantable medical devices and pacemakers from the circuit designer point of view. This is illustrated by the requirements and solutions applied in our implementation of an industrial IC for pacemakers. There from, the book discusses the means for reduction of power consumption at three levels: base technology, power-oriented analytical synthesis procedures and circuit architecture.

This book presents a system-level analysis of inductive wireless power transfer (WPT) links. The basic requirements, design parameters, and utility of key building blocks used in inductive WPT links are presented, followed by detailed theoretical analysis, design, and optimization procedure, while considering practical aspects for various application domains. Readers are provided with fundamental, yet easy to follow guidelines to help them design high-efficiency inductive links, based on a set of application-specific target specifications. The authors discuss a wide variety of recently proposed approaches to achieve the maximum efficiency point, such as the use of additional resonant coils, matching networks, modulation of the load quality factor (Q-modulation), and adjustable DC-DC converters. Additionally, the attainability of the maximum efficiency point together with output voltage regulation is addressed in a closed-loop power control mechanism. Numerous examples, including MATLAB/Octave calculation scripts and LTspice simulation files, are presented throughout the book. This enables readers to check their own results and test variations, facilitating a thorough understanding of the concepts discussed. The book concludes with real examples demonstrating the practical application of topics discussed. A German-born Jew, Olga Benario was one of the most remarkable Communist activists of the twentieth century. With a genius for organization and an unwavering devotion, she crisscrossed the globe educating and activating legions to combat the worldwide plagues of Nazism and fascism. At the age of nineteen, she masterminded a daring prison raid to free her lover, the Communist intellectual Otto Braun. Together they escaped to Moscow, where they quickly rose in the ranks of the international Communist movement. At twenty-six, Benario was chosen to serve as bodyguard to the legendary Brazilian guerrilla leader Luis Carlos Prestes, who had been brought to Moscow for training and would soon become her new lover. Traveling under assumed names, they crossed Europe and North America to reach Brazil, where Prestes would launch a revolution against the fascist regime. But tragically, within months, they were seized by police. From Brazil, Olga, then seven months pregnant, was deported to Nazi Germany. She was subsequently sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp, and in February 1942 she was sent to her death in the gas chambers at Bernburg.

In the midst of political disaffection and public despair, new social movements, women, youth, indigenous people, workers, peasants, opened up avenues of hope against the background of darkness invading the continent. The first section traces back to the definitions and concepts underlying the terms “generalized seizures and epilepsies”. Section II reviews human and animal data suggesting that the brainstem network plays an important role for tonic seizures generation. The third and fourth sections analyze recent knowledge on cortico-thalamic and basal ganglia networks in absence and myoclonic seizures, both in animal models and in humans. The fifth section compares the phenomenology of “Primary versus Secondary Tonico-clonic seizures”, including animal data, clinical expression in humans and genetics. Section VI goes back to the discussion “Cortical” versus “Centrencephalic” theories. The last two chapters thoroughly review the clinical applications of current knowledge, in terms of pharmacological approach and clinical care.

On 25 November 1975, representatives of five South American intelligence services held a secret meeting in the city of Santiago, Chile. At the end of the gathering, the participating delegations agreed to launch Operation Condor under the pretext of coordinating counterinsurgency activities, sharing information to combat leftist guerrillas and stopping an alleged advance of Marxism in the region. Condor, however, went much further than mere exchanges of information between neighbours. It was a plan to transnationalize state terrorism beyond South America. This book identifies the reasons why the South American military regimes chose this strategic path at a time when most revolutionary movements in the region were defeated, in the process of leaving behind armed struggle and resuming the political path. One of Condor’s most intriguing features was the level of cooperation achieved by these governments considering the distrust, animosity and historical rivalries between these countries’ armed forces. This book explores these differences and goes further than previous lines of inquiry, which have focused predominantly on the conflict between Latin American leftist guerrillas and the armed forces, to study the contribution made by other actors such as civilian anticommunist figures and organizations, and the activities conducted by politically active exiles and their supporters in numerous countries. This broader approach confirms that the South American dictatorships launched the Condor Plan to systematically eliminate any kind of opposition, especially key figures and groups involved in the denunciation of the regimes’ human rights violations.

Ecosystems in which such pathogens are largely controlled by environmental stochasticity are being drastically streamlined by both agribusiness-led deforestation and deficits in public health and environmental sanitation. Consequently, a subset of infections that once burned out relatively quickly in local forests are now propagating across susceptible human populations whose vulnerability to infection is often exacerbated in structurally adjusted cities. The resulting outbreaks are characterized by greater global extent, duration, and momentum. As infectious diseases in an age of nation states and global health programs cannot, as much of the present modeling literature presumes, be described by interacting populations of host, vector, and pathogen alone, a series of control theory models is also introduced here. These models, useful to researchers and health officials alike, explicitly address interactions between government ministries and the pathogens they aim to control.
