A longevidade desse projeto, em sua décima sexta edição, demonstra seu êxito. Quantos discentes não integraram já essa coleção? Alguns, que publicaram quando eram mestrandos, retornaram depois como doutorandos. Nomes de jovens estudantes que assinaram capítulos em outros volumes são hoje egressos brilhantes de nosso Programa, atuando como docentes em diversas instituições. Portanto, os textos presentes neste volume, como nos anteriores, representam o despontar da carreira de florescentes pesquisadores. E por incitar a prática de divulgação acadêmica como parte fundamental da vida acadêmica, esta proposta de promover publicação discente tem servido de modelo para outros grupos do nosso curso. Este livro reúne resultados de pesquisas em andamento envolvendo as três linhas de pesquisa da área de Estudos de Literatura ̶ "Literatura: teoria, crítica e história"; "Literatura: tradução e relações (trans)culturais e intersemióticas"; e "Poéticas da contemporaneidade" ̶ , em diálogo transversal pelo foco nas Literaturas de Língua Inglesa. Consequentemente, segue abordagens metodológicas variadas e abrange diversas obras dessas literaturas, de diferentes gêneros, tempos e espaços. Assim, com abordagens sobre escritores e escritoras, clássicos e contemporâneos, uns menos conhecidos do grande público e outros mais comerciais, em português ou em inglês, ocupando-se de temas atuais e socialmente relevantes, encontra-se aqui material fértil também para outros pesquisadores, com quem se espera o diálogo a partir da publicação deste livro.

Women still face more obstacles to become entrepreneurs no matter the country, culture or environment. Over the course of 15 months, the duo also navigated the sociocultural aspects of the countries visited and had an experience that went beyond the interviews. "We had the opportunity to get to know a little of the role and perception of women through them. It was an excellent exercise to break our own paradigms and prejudices, "said the authors.

This book examines the role of tax policy in the incidence of socio-economic inequality. With a focus on Latin American, the author demonstrates that while inequality has decreased remarkably in the last decade – during the very period in which inequality was increasing almost everywhere else in the world – this reduction cannot be attributed to a better use of tax policy. Offering both quantitative and qualitative reviews of tax policies pursued by Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru over the last two decades, Reducing Inequality in Latin America contends that these countries continue to make insufficient use taxation measures in combating startlingly high levels of inequality. Drawing on legal texts, interviews with researchers and experts in the field, and official monetary statistics to obtain a complete picture of how discretionary tax policy has been pursued in the region, this volume engages with a range of recent economic theories to argue for the importance of using the tax system to reduce inequalities, whilst also offering new methods for measuring tax policy in subsequent research. As such, it will appeal both to scholars of social science and policy makers with interests in economics, social inequality, public policy and international political economy.

The mainstream media in Brazil portrays favelas (unregulated low-income neighbourhoods) in a negative light. This has been the case since their emergence over a century ago. Voices from the Favelas navigates through the contemporary representation of the favelas in the established media, discussing how this partial representation impacts issues of identity and social segregation, the legitimation of structural violence in those sites, and providing an account of the recent emergence of digital social networks as “counterpublics”. In order to understand the struggle against the characterisation of the favela as a site dominated by violence (a framework which has been disseminated on a global scale and accepted as the norm), this book will take its readers inside the mindset of the favela media activists, examining the production of information and the organisation of the residents as they resist and challenge the status quo. Are the activists able to counteract the official narrative in the struggles against misrepresentation and social invisibility, or is the mainstream version of the favela still strong enough to help in the legitimation of the institutionalised violence?

In recent decades there has been an exponential increase in large hydroelectric plants in Brazil, especially in the Amazon region. These large hydraulic structures impact the environment and the lives of people living in the places where they settle and require a special type of water governance. The dictatorial regime (1964-1985) created a "standard" for the construction of these great structures, through an institutional and legal framework, which benefited the Brazilian business elite but also, through the creation of a popular imagination, which shows itself lasting progress on the country's progress and development. The suspension of security, the fragility of institutional environmental structures, the disrespect for indigenous reserves, the lack of clarity about the concept of "affected population" and the non-payment of fair compensation were identified as one of the main challenges for a democratic water governance in the country. In the late 1970s, the Dam-Affected Movement (MAB) began its organization and is also studied in this research. The study is an important and insightful academic contribution to the understanding of the main bottlenecks of effective water governance in Brazil.
