Mud Creek, Alabama, été 1979. Alvin Lee Fuqua, ex Mister Alabama, a 28 ans et un rêve : devenir Mister America, pour passer à la télé dans un talk-show et se faire remarquer et devenir acteur et jouer dans des films avec Burt Reynolds. Un bien beau rêve, contrarié par un problème de hanche. Alors Alvin a changé ses plans – adieu gloire et bodybuilding, cap sur la fortune grâce à la pêche aux moules. Comprendre comment Johnny Ray a pu mourir devient l’obsession d’Alvin. Sa vie bascule. Il se remet à la musculation, invente de nouveaux exercices aussi loufoques que terribles, il prend des stéroïdes, au risque d’y laisser sa peau. Rien ne va plus. La veuve nymphomane de Johnny Ray vient s’installer chez lui avec ses deux enfants. Rien ne va plus. Cliff, vétéran du Vietnam, tombe amoureux d’Alma, la sœur d’Alvin, anorexique, et reine du stand-up. Rien ne va plus. Le shérif découvre les plants de marijuana que Freddy, ancien joueur de baseball, fait pousser sur son bateau. Décidément, rien ne va plus.
