Faisal Devji argues that new forms of militancy, such as the actions of al-Qaeda, are informed by the same desire for agency and equality that animates other humanitarian interventions, such as environmentalism and pacifism. To the militant, victimized Muslims are more than just symbols of ethnic and religious persecution-they represent humanity's centuries-long struggle for legitimacy and agency. Acts of terror, therefore, are fueled by the militant's desire to become a historical actor on the global stage. Though they have yet to build concrete political institutions, militant movements have formed a kind of global society, and as Devji makes clear, this society pursues the same humanitarian objectives that drive more benevolent groups.

It has been more than seventy-six years since the Partition of the Indian Subcontinent, but for those who lived through the phase, the memories remain as fresh as ever. Based on interviews of the 'Partition Generation' living across borders (India and Pakistan), this book aims to bring together narratives from the generation that would soon be completely lost to time. With its beginnings in a Facebook page called 'Bolti Khidki: The Speaking Window', now being conceptualized as a book, this is an important work with the premise that people are humane in their natural state; that among the stories of bloodshed and rape that Partition is most remembered for, there are also stories of religious tolerance and mutual respect. There are also numerous cases of people being given shelter, among all the carnage that took place, by those belonging to other religions, other faiths. This book captures not just memories, but also the resilience of those who suffered and emerged stronger.

Rivers of the Sultan offers a history of the Ottoman Empire's management of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in the early modern period. During the early sixteenth century, a radical political realignment in West Asia placed the reins of the Tigris and Euphrates in the hands of Istanbul. The political unification of the longest rivers in West Asia allowed the Ottoman state to rebalance the natural resource disparity along its eastern frontier. It regularly organized the shipment of grain, metal, and timber from upstream areas of surplus in Anatolia and the Jazira to downstream areas of need in Iraq. This imperial system of waterborne communication, the book argues, created heavily militarized fortresses that anchored the Ottoman presence in Iraq, enabling Istanbul to hold in check foreign and domestic challenges to its authority and to exploit the organic wealth of the Tigris-Euphrates alluvium. From the end of the seventeenth century, the convergence of natural and human disasters transformed the Ottoman Empire's relationship with its twin rivers. A trend toward provincial autonomy ensued that would localize the Ottoman management of the Tigris and Euphrates and shift its command post from Istanbul to the provinces. By placing a river system at the center of analysis, this book reveals intimate bonds between valley and mountain, water and power in the early modern world"--

Great Britain's decision to withdraw its forces from the Gulf was a turning point in the modern history of the Middle East. Now regional players had to find rules of common coexistence. With the US immersed in the Vietnam war and the Soviet Union pursuing a policy of caution, there was no world power waiting to succeed Britain. As a result, Gulf politics "went local". This book examines how Iran influenced efforts to reorder the Gulf's political landscape. Its central argument is that a better understanding of the new Gulf order can be achieved by emphasizing local concerns and the degree to which regional powers influenced the policy of external powers in those times.
Edwin Arlington Robinson was a prolific American poet during the 1920s. This book approaches one of the critical features of Robinson’s poetry, often overlooked by critics, which is his method of narration. Narration is one of the crucial points in Robinson’s poetry that puzzles his critics. Robinson’s poems are portraits that include characters, setting, a method of narration and all other points that fit any narrative piece. This book takes as its point of departure the idea that unless Robinson’s narrative approach is discussed, no proper understanding of his poems will be achieved. The book deals with the influence of New England and Puritanism on the poet’s life and works. The book studies the poet’s shorter and longer poems. It also includes the study of his masterpiece ‘The Man Against the Sky.’
The information technology revolution has significantly changed the way in which people interact with the world. Among other things, it has allowed us to access information about almost anything instantaneously and has given us the ability to easily purchase goods without leaving our homes. The Internet of Things is the next step of this revolution and will further transform the world by allowing us to connect our many “things” to the Internet. It will allow our smart cars to drive themselves and our smart refrigerators to automatically order food for us. However, making the world smarter will lead to greater security and privacy challenges. Smarter World, Bigger Threats explains what the Internet of Things is by providing an overview of its history, development, and technical structure. It is estimated that billions of devices will be connected to the Internet in the coming years. Additionally, these devices will have access to financial or other personal information of its users. This will lead to many technological, security, and privacy challenges. Smarter World, Bigger Threats highlights these challenges and provides possible solutions.
The book is about our personality, The way we think what we are is the way we become in our life. All of us have looked at others and wished we could be like them. We wished we could have what they have. But you can’t be someone else. You are you. You are unique and have your own talents and experiences. You can use those talents and experiences to get what you want, but you shouldn’t sacrifice yourself to do so. Many of us also act like someone we are not. Whether you did it to impress a love interest, your boss, or someone else, we have all not been ourselves because we believed it would get us what we wanted. But when you are not yourself, you change. You change who you are and what you are about.

Making of Martyrs unravels an epic saga of populist politics in the postcolonial Indian subcontinent. Indira Gandhi, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman were towering figures and have been simultaneously loved and hated in equal measure. During their heyday, each of these leaders garnered extraordinary power and charisma. Their followers, admirers and loyal supporters continue to idolise and romanticise them, yet in the eyes of their critics they were ruthless, power-hungry tyrants and partisan villains. These dichotomies remain irreconcilable since their followers venerate them as a model for the future and their critics relegate them to a haunted past. Drawing on years of research, Faisal Khosa explores the turbulent lives and times of these three leaders and gives us a vivid account of their politics and personalities.
What are the motives behind Osama bin Laden's and Al-Qaeda's jihad against America and the West? Innumerable attempts have been made in recent years to explain that mysterious worldview. In Landscapes of the Jihad, Faisal Devji focuses on the ethical content of this jihad as opposed to its purported political intent. Al-Qaeda differs radically from such groups as Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood and Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiyah, which aim to establish fundamentalist Islamic states. In fact, Devji contends, Al-Qaeda, with its decentralized structure and emphasis on moral rather than political action, actually has more in common with multinational corporations, antiglobalization activists, and environmentalist and social justice organizations. Bin Laden and his lieutenants view their cause as a response to the oppressive conditions faced by the Muslim world rather than an Islamist attempt to build states.Al-Qaeda culls diverse symbols and fragments from Islam's past in order to legitimize its global war against the "metaphysical evil" emanating from the West. The most salient example of this assemblage, Devji argues, is the concept of jihad itself, which Al-Qaeda defines as an "individual duty" incumbent on all Muslims, like prayer. Although medieval Islamic thought provides precedent for this interpretation, Al-Qaeda has deftly separated the stipulation from its institutional moorings and turned jihad into a weapon of spiritual conflict. Al-Qaeda and its jihad, Devji suggests, are only the most visible manifestations of wider changes in the Muslim world. Such changes include the fragmentation of traditional as well as fundamentalist forms of authority. In the author's view, Al-Qaeda represents a new way of organizing Muslim belief and practice within a global landscape and does not require ideological or institutional unity.Offering a compelling explanation for the central purpose of Al-Qaeda's jihad against the West, the meaning of its strategies and tactics, and its moral and aesthetic dimensions, Landscapes of the Jihad is at once a sophisticated work of historical and cultural analysis and an invaluable guide to the world's most prominent terrorist movement.
This book focuses on the design of secure and efficient signature and signcryption schemes for vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). We use methods such as public key cryptography (PKI), identity-based cryptography (IDC), and certificateless cryptography (CLC) to design bilinear pairing and elliptic curve cryptography-based signature and signcryption schemes and prove their security in the random oracle model. The signature schemes ensure the authenticity of source and integrity of a safety message. While signcryption schemes ensure authentication and confidentiality of the safety message in a single logical step. To provide readers to study the schemes that securely and efficiently process a message and multiple messages in vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure communications is the main benefit of this book. In addition, it can benefit researchers, engineers, and graduate students in the fields of security and privacy of VANETs, Internet of vehicles securty, wireless body area networks security, etc.

Karim examines the changes and continuity of Indonesia’s foreign policy in the post-authoritarian era, under presidents Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Joko Widodo. Indonesia conceptualised and aimed to adopt four principle roles after 2004 – being a voice for developing countries; being a regional leader; being an advocate for democratic and human rights; and being a bridge-builder. These roles, however, were by no means stable and were constantly being negotiated and contested. Karim analyses the contested nature of Indonesian foreign policy and the limits this places on consistency in enacting these roles. He highlights two drivers for such limitations – conflicting role conceptions and state fragmentation. He develops this argument based on four case studies of Indonesia’s engagement in human rights governance and trade governance at both regional and global levels. Essential reading for students and scholars of Indonesia’s foreign policy, that will also be of substantial value to those studying policy in Southeast Asia more broadly.
Since the Earth Summit of 1992, the concept of sustainable development has gained rapid interest in global policy debate—which incurs effective policy solutions in any forest management. Mangroves are coastal forests, commonly found in the tropics and subtropics, where they fulfil many necessary functions from the productive, protective, and social points of view. A large number of multidisciplinary actors ranging from international to local level are actively engaged with perceived issues concentrated on mangrove forest policies irrespective of any geographical location. Nonetheless, given their financial, technical, and expertise-related means, the active actors are expected to have a considerable degree of conflicts and competition showing formal and informal influences over policy issues. Moreover, by allocating financial means and sub-delegating authoritative power, actors at multiple jurisdictions may gain power and serve interests in mangrove governance. Hence, the study attempts to describe and explain the bureaucratic rivalry among the actors in mangrove forest policy and management at the meta-level. In doing so, the author employed the Sundarbans of Bangladesh — the world’s largest contiguous tract of mangrove forest – as an illustrative case in policy formulation and implementation.
