Katerina longs to know why her late grandmother, Miriam, refused to talk about the past, especially when she inherits a journal and handwritten letters stashed in a wooden spice box, cryptic treasures written in Armenian, Miriam's mother tongue. On vacation in Cyprus, Katerina finds the key to unlocking her grandmother's secrets and discovers a family legacy of exile and loss. Aged seven, Miriam was expelled from her home in Eastern Turkey and witnessed the death of her beloved brother Gabriel, or so she believed. Katerina sets out on a fact-finding mission across the island and solves a mystery that changes her life and lays the ghosts of her grandmother's turbulent past to rest. My Big Fat Greek Wedding meets Sarah's Key in this gripping family saga, set during the tragic start of the Armenian genocide in 1915 Turkey, spanning the ups and downs of a family separated by the devastating aftermath in 1985 Greece. This blackly comic story of a Greek Cypriot family living on a council estate in 1980s Nottingham is told through the eyes of Anna, a first generation teenager who works in the family fish and chip shop. Anna feels frustrated and isolated, and is struggling to break with tradition and escape a life behind the counter but her formidable, extremely protective yet hilarious mother Tina thinks that education is wasted on a girl - all Anna needs to do is to cook well, wear terrible frilly blouses and keep out of trouble so that she attracts a nice, suitable Greek-Cypriot husband. The only person who really seems to understand Anna is her extraordinary, wise grandmother, Yiaya, who reads coffee cups and practices rudimentary magic, much to Tina's disapproval. Through Yiaya's storytelling, Anna learns about the turbulent history of her ancestral island, her grandfather who went missing in the war of 1974 and finally discovers the secrets that have shaped her family. There are moments of joy (wonderful feasts where the table heaves with Greek delicacies) and sadness (the family have to cope with the cruel bigotry of those around them). But is not until tragedy strikes that Anna begins to take control of her own destiny instead of complying with her loveable but domineering mother, who is all too willing to map out her daughter's life for her.
Katerina inherits a scented, wooden spice box after her grandmother Mariam dies. It contains letters and a diary, written in Armenian. As she pieces together her family story, Katerina learns that Mariam's childhood was shattered by the Armenian tragedy of 1915. Mariam was exiled from her home in Turkey and separated from her beloved brother, Gabriel, her life marred by grief and the loss of her first love. Dissatisfied and restless, Katerina tries to find resolution in her own life as she completes Mariam's story – on a journey that takes her across Cyprus and then half a world away to New York. Miracles, it seems, can happen—for those trapped by the past, and for Katerina herself.
