(See Full Review)MAA ReviewsIn this third volume of 'A Course in Analysis', two topics indispensible for every mathematician are treated: Measure and Integration Theory; and Complex Function Theory.In the first part measurable spaces and measure spaces are introduced and Caratheodory's extension theorem is proved. This is followed by the construction of the integral with respect to a measure, in particular with respect to the Lebesgue measure in the Euclidean space. The Radon-Nikodym theorem and the transformation theorem are discussed and much care is taken to handle convergence theorems with applications, as well as Lp-spaces.Integration on product spaces and Fubini's theorem is a further topic as is the discussion of the relation between the Lebesgue integral and the Riemann integral. In addition to these standard topics we deal with the Hausdorff measure, convolutions of functions and measures including the Friedrichs mollifier, absolutely continuous functions and functions of bounded variation. The fundamental theorem of calculus is revisited, and we also look at Sard's theorem or the Riesz-Kolmogorov theorem on pre-compact sets in Lp-spaces.The text can serve as a companion to lectures, but it can also be used for self-studying. An arcane ritual reveals a code hidden within Thelema's most holy book. Over a period of several years, the former head of Kenneth Grant's Typhonian Order in the United States, conducted a bizarre sexual ritual with elements of Thelema, Lovecraft, and the Egyptian mummification ceremony to unlock a mathematical code buried in plain sight in Aleister Crowley's Book of the Law. Jeffrey Evans, a follower of Aleister Crowley's Thelema since his teenage years, had an encounter on a bridge in Washington, DC, with a being he identified as his holy guardian angel. This being--Karla--provided him with the inspiration to begin a series of rituals incorporating Egyptian and Lovecraftian elements in an effort to traverse the Tunnels of Set: pathways on the "dark side" of the Qabalistic Tree of Life. The ritual, conducted with his wife, Ruth Keenan, employed cross-dressing and bondage as well as Cthulhian imagery and chanting, and resulted in a series of revelations concerning the mathematical code hidden within the verses of Crowley's Book of the Law: a circumstance that Crowley always suspected but was never able to prove, not even with the help of accomplished mathematicians. Evans tried in vain to demonstrate this code to other members of the Typhonian Order, to no avail, but a chance meeting online with Peter Levenda resulted in Levenda's taking a closer look at the data and what he discovered astounded him. He agreed to help bring this discovery to the attention of the general public. There has been very little new work published in the field of Thelema in the last 10 years or so, at least since the death of Kenneth Grant. Most publishing concerning Crowley has been biographical or reissues of Crowley's own material. This work is a departure from all of that. It is new material, completely unexpected within the Crowley/Thelema/OTO environment, for it offers a new approach to the mathematical nature of Thelema that so far has been based on Qabalah. This work brings attention to the existence of a sacred geometry within the verses of the Book of the Law: a completely unexpected discovery but nonetheless mathematically verifiable. It bridges the gap between Thelema, Freemasonry, and Templarism, as well as Gnosticism, demonstrating a continuum of esoteric thought spanning millennia.

This Book, this Essay began as a response to Peter Berger et al’s , ‘The Homeless Mind’, and their concerns for the influence of Modernism on Societies. My interests and focus is both broader and wider; taking in the intellectual roots of western sociology and the earliest historical roots of the European Home; drawing on; Sociological Biography, Phenomenology, Multiple Realities, DIY techniques, Philosophy, Poetry, Consciousness and Spirituality, also with brief references to my cat! Usually each one of these would stand alone, perhaps as a conventional essay. But to combine them into a single entity, and to maintain a ‘flow' between ideas with varied resonances, required something more integrative; in this case derived from the spirit of Husserl’s phenomenology, the Epoque, freely applied throughout, not only to signify the tentativeness of personal opinion, but also as an example of multiple realities, and as tributaries of thought and beliefs feeding the great river of civilisation. The “Homely Mind’, of the title of this essay is one, more of a certain hope than achievement, as it might possibly be in most cases of all times and all places. So in the meantime, the best we can do is to endeavour to ‘keep the home fires burning’ as that sign of the ‘sacred flame of life’.

This book explores the new politics of class in 21st century Britain. It shows how the changing shape of the class structure since 1945 has led political parties to change, which has both reduced class voting and increased class non-voting. This argument is developed in three stages. The first is to show that there has been enormous social continuity in class divisions. The authors demonstrate this using extensive evidence on class and educational inequality, perceptions of inequality, identity and awareness, and political attitudes over more than fifty years. The second stage is to show that there has been enormous political change in response to changing class sizes. Party policies, politicians' rhetoric, and the social composition of political elites have radically altered. Parties offer similar policies, appeal less to specific classes, and are populated by people from more similar backgrounds. Simultaneously the mass media have stopped talking about the politics of class. The third stage is to show that these political changes have had three major consequences. First, as Labour and the Conservatives became more similar, class differences in party preferences disappeared. Second, new parties, most notably UKIP, have taken working class voters from the mainstream parties. Third, and most importantly, the lack of choice offered by the mainstream parties has led to a huge increase in class-based abstention from voting. Working class people have become much less likely to vote. In that sense, Britain appears to have followed the US down a path of working class political exclusion, ultimately undermining the representativeness of our democracy. They conclude with a discussion of the Brexit referendum and the role that working class alienation played in its historic outcome.
