Language is intimately related to interaction. The question arises: Is the structure of interaction somehow mirrored in language structure and use? This book suggests a positive answer to this question by examining the ubiquitous phenomenon of fictive interaction, in which non-genuine conversational turns appear in discourse, even within clauses, phrases, and lexical items (e.g. “Not happy? Money back! guarantee”). The book is based on a collection of hundreds of examples of fictive interaction at all grammatical levels from a wide variety of spoken, written, and signed languages, and from many different discourse genres. Special attention is devoted to the strategic use of fictive interaction in legal argumentation, with a focus on high-profile criminal trials. Both trial lawyers and lay jurors often present material evidence or murder victims as speaking, and express emotions and intentions in conversational terms. The book thus establishes the role of the conversational turn—rather than the sentence—as the basic unit of language, and the role of conversation as a frame that structures cognition, discourse, and grammar.

Non-literary Fiction examines contemporary art produced in Latin America in reaction to the growing tide of neoliberalism with its purging of specific social, ethnic, and racial meanings. Over decades, military juntas throughout South and Central America (often supported by the US) have brutally restricted freedom of movement and speech and caused whole segments of their populations to "disappear." Gabara shows how many Latin American artists since the late 1950s have strategically positioned their art as "fictions" in response to the social death and unspeakable violence that undergirds their experience. By "fictions," Gabara means a kind of art that encourages a beholder or participant to create the work's meaning for herself, out of her own experience, thus engaging in fabulation. She brings together artists working across Latin America, in diaspora, and in the US to offer a pathway out of the nationalistic frameworks that generally attend Latin American studies ("Mexican art," "Brazilian art," etc.) She builds a case regarding nonliterary fictions through nuanced readings of works by many artists, from famous ones such as Lygia Clark, Hélio Oiticica, and Francis Alÿs to emerging artists Abraham Cruzvillegas, Amalia Pica, and Chemi Rosado-Seijo, to Latinx artists such as Asco, Raphael Montañez Ortiz, and Ruben Ortiz Torres, engaging work within the political frameworks of Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the US"--

This monograph investigates the nature, properties, and consequences of the grammatical constraints that yield overt marking of objects in a variety of languages. The author, working within the Minimalist Program, concentrates on the syntactic and semantic behaviors of a particular class of objects: objects morphologically marked by the dative preposition in Romance languages, especially in several Spanish dialects, with consideration of similar phenomena in other languages. The central questions addressed revolve around the syntactic derivations that have accusative and dative complements and the role played by "doubling" clitics in these derivations. The analysis, concerned primarily with Case theory, unifies syntactic phenomena by isolating the grammatical factors that yield structures with accusative and dative objects. The monograph also includes an extended discussion of some classical themes of syntactic theory in the Romance languages, including asymmetries in the wh-movement of objects with clitics, and causatives. Cuba, New Mexico, was first settled in 1769. Originally known as Nacimiento, it was located on the northwestern edge of the Spanish Colonial Empire. It was very isolated and the people who settled Cuba seldom travelled to other areas due to the lack of roads and long distances between settlements. As a consequence, Cuba retained many of the traditions, practices and archaic language of the early Colonial Period until the mid-twentieth century. Only after World War II did this village emerge from its Colonial traditions and begin to acquire more modern amenities and practices. Different from many other small towns, it did not change because of outside forces but mostly because of the actions of people who had been away during World War II and came back wanting what they had experienced elsewhere. “Antes” is the Spanish word for “before.” When used by itself in casual conversation, it always refers to the way things were before the end of World War II. This book contains descriptions and photographs of the practices and activities of the people of Cuba in that earlier time.
