Whereas the life and work of female missionaries have been fruitfully reflected upon, male gender identity has often been understood as an unchanging category. This book offers a pioneering account of the relationship between missionary work and masculinity. This workbook grew out of the practices assigned for self-growth and development for (1) Holistic Health: Western Perspectives, a course at San Francisco State Uni versity; (2) clients and participants at the Biofeedback and Family Therapy Institute in Berkeley; and (3) participants in peak performance training programs. The goals of this workbook are to offer experiences to facilitate life-long learning of skills to enhance health and growth. We hope the reader will experience increased autonomy and gain self-mastery skills through exercises that foster awareness and control. The cascading program is based upon uncovering, allowing, and encouraging the intrinsic drive toward integration, wholeness, and health. Each year many of our students report that practicing these skills has affected them deeply. The program offered them prag matic skills to master stress, set goals, and experience a deep change in their worldview and health. A number of them have said that this was the most useful course they had taken at San Francisco State University. The materials presented here are part of a course offered by the Institute for Holistic Healing Studies. After the turmoil of the Great Depression and World War II, Americans looked to the nation’s more distant past for lessons to inform its uncertain future. By applying recent and emerging techniques in mass communication—including radio and television programs and commercial book clubs—American elites working in media, commerce, and government used history to confer authority on their respective messages. With insight and wit, Erik Christiansen uncovers in Channeling the Past the ways that powerful corporations rewrote history to strengthen the postwar corporate state, while progressives, communists, and other leftists vied to make their own versions of the past more popular. The importance of convexity arguments in functional analysis has long been realized, but a comprehensive theory of infinite-dimensional convex sets has hardly existed for more than a decade. In fact, the integral representation theorems of Choquet and Bishop -de Leeuw together with the uniqueness theorem of Choquet inaugurated a new epoch in infinite-dimensional convexity. Initially considered curious and tech nically difficult, these theorems attracted many mathematicians, and the proofs were gradually simplified and fitted into a general theory. The results can no longer be considered very "deep" or difficult, but they certainly remain all the more important. Today Choquet Theory provides a unified approach to integral representations in fields as diverse as potential theory, probability, function algebras, operator theory, group representations and ergodic theory. At the same time the new concepts and results have made it possible, and relevant, to ask new questions within the abstract theory itself. Such questions pertain to the interplay between compact convex sets K and their associated spaces A(K) of continuous affine functions; to the duality between faces of K and appropriate ideals of A(K); to dominated extension problems for continuous affine functions on faces; and to direct convex sum decomposition into faces, as well as to integral for mulas generalizing such decompositions. This compact and innovative book tackles one of the central issues in drug policy: the lack of a coherent conceptual structure for thinking about drugs. Drugs generally fall into one of seven categories: prescription, over the counter, alternative medicine, common-use drugs like alcohol, tobacco and caffeine; religious-use, sports enhancement; and of course illegal street drugs like cocaine and marijuana. Our thinking and policies varies wildly from one to the other, with inconsistencies that derive more from cultural and social values than from medical or scientific facts. Penalties exist for steroid use, while herbal remedies or cold medication are legal. Native Americans may legally use peyote, but others may not. Penalties may vary for using different forms of the same drug, such as crack vs. powder cocaine. Herbal remedies are unregulated by the FDA; but medical marijuana is illegal in most states. Battin and her contributors lay a foundation for a wiser drug policy by promoting consistency and coherency in the discussion of drug issues and by encouraging a unique dialogue across disciplines. Erik J. Engstrom offers a historical perspective on the effects of gerrymandering on elections and party control of the U.S. national legislature. Aside from the requirements that districts be continuous and, after 1842, that each select only one representative, there were few restrictions on congressional districting. Unrestrained, state legislators drew and redrew districts to suit their own partisan agendas. With the rise of the “one-person, one-vote” doctrine and the implementation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, however, redistricting became subject to court oversight. Engstrom evaluates the abundant cross-sectional and temporal variation in redistricting plans and their electoral results from all the states, from 1789 through the 1960s, to identify the causes and consequences of partisan redistricting. His analysis reveals that districting practices across states and over time systematically affected the competitiveness of congressional elections, shaped the partisan composition of congressional delegations, and, on occasion, determined party control of the House of Representatives.

Health systems everywhere are expected to meet increasing public and political demands for accessible, high-quality care. Policy-makers, managers, and clinicians use their best efforts to improve efficiency, safety, quality, and economic viability. One solution has been to mimic approaches that have been shown to work in other domains, such as quality management, lean production, and high reliability. In the enthusiasm for such solutions, scant attention has been paid to the fact that health care as a multifaceted system differs significantly from most traditional industries. Solutions based on linear thinking in engineered systems do not work well in complicated, multi-stakeholder non-engineered systems, of which health care is a leading example. A prerequisite for improving health care and making it more resilient is that the nature of everyday clinical work be well understood. Yet the focus of the majority of policy or management solutions, as well as that of accreditation and regulation, is work as it ought to be (also known as ’work-as-imagined’). The aim of policy-makers and managers, whether the priority is safety, quality, or efficiency, is therefore to make everyday clinical work - or work-as-done - comply with work-as-imagined. This fails to recognise that this normative conception of work is often oversimplified, incomplete, and outdated. There is therefore an urgent need to better understand everyday clinical work as it is done. Despite the common focus on deviations and failures, it is undeniable that clinical work goes right far more often than it goes wrong, and that we only can make it better if we understand how this happens. Class action lawsuits--allowing one or a few plaintiffs to represent many who seek redress--have long been controversial. The current controversy, centered on lawsuits for money damages, is characterized by sharp disagreement among stakeholders about the kinds of suits being filed, whether plaintiffs' claims are meritorious, and whether resolutions to class actions are fair or socially desirable. Ultimately, these concerns lead many to wonder, Are class actions worth their costs to society and to business? Do they do more harm than good? To describe the landscape of current damage class action litigation, elucidate problems, and identify solutions, the RAND Institute for Civil Justice conducted a study using qualitative and quantitative research methods. The researchers concluded that the controversy over damage class actions has proven intractable because it implicates deeply held but sharply contested ideological views among stakeholders. Nevertheless, many of the political antagonists agree that class action practices merit improvement. The authors argue that both practices and outcomes could be substantially improved if more judges would supervise class action litigation more actively and scrutinize proposed settlements and fee awards more carefully. The notion that the stateliest of oaks germinates from an altogether miniscule acorn has special meaning for the community of Oxford, Georgia, whether used literally to describe the Prince of the Forest or metaphorically depict large and long serving families or the birth of a great university. Emory College was rooted in the soils of Oxford for 80 years, growing in fits and starts until 1919, when, with relative suddenness, it was transplanted to Atlanta. In the wake of that move, the community shrank from a Methodist stronghold to an institutional afterthought. Yet, both the community and the campus endured and thrived again, as both old and new families put down fresh roots and engendered a deep sense of place, fellowship, service, and celebration.
