Mother Warned You is a violent dose of reality with a Christian message throughout. Adult content, just enough to make it real, also make it interesting. Before you ever get to read it, I want to say that I never had any formal training as a writer. I have heard that a little of the author goes into every character. Im sure that is natural. Teachers also tell you to write about what you know. I did just that. Those are dismal thoughts for me to digest, but, oh well, if you knew me better, youd see me throughout the book. I managed to move about the country so much, that Id be gone from an area before too many got to know me well. Lots of good people only knew me as a roofer or a carpenter. Some only knew me as Snakeman. That was all they needed to know. I kept snakes for many years and still have three. Of course, I like to think of my self as the good guy, basically I am and usually I was. Today, I am for sure. Still, it was too easy to draw on personal thoughts and experience to develop even the most horrible of the bad guys. Every single character in all the stories was patterened after someone Ive crossed paths with in the 55 years Id lived prior to publishing this the first time. Id gotten to know (or be) some of the bad guys too well. Tantrum is a departure from writing norms. The line between good guys and bad guys is only clear due to the truly evil nature of the villians. Cottonmouth and Mikes Place deal with a flexible style of police work that most cops only dream of. Liberal courts stymie the best efforts of good cops. These tales are about how theyd like to operate.
Derrick Johnson, a Vietnam veteran and carpenter has fallen on hard times. He moves, or I should say, "flees" back to the Houston area where he hopes to find work in his field. His rented home at the dead end of a dirt road turns out to to be at the center of some very grisly goings on. The untended cemetery next door are his only neighbors. Gradually, Derrick works his way into the good graces of local police to help clean up some unsolved crimes that had been plagueing local authorities for too long. The search for guilty parties leads authorities to some unlikely suspects as Derrick's role becomes more involved. Nothing is beneath the perpetrators' diabolical behavior. This thriller will remind you why lock your doors at night.

This book is an inspirational guide to helping individuals overcome physical challenges ranging from lower back pain to debilitating muscular conditions. While other such programs initially motivate consumers to be physically active, they fall short of actually modifying their life style, because they are too demanding and too difficult to maintain. The Agili routine provides a number of activities that slowly help build up mental strength, range of motion, and physical stamina
THE AUTHOR’S INTERWOVEN DESCRIPTIONS OF HISTORIC DATA PROVIDE A SENSE OF THE IMPORTANT ROLE THAT RITUALS HAVE PLAYED IN THE EVERYDAY LIFE OF CHRISTIANS FOR THE PAST TWO MILLENNIA. THROUGH CONCISE AND CANDID ACCOUNTS ACCOMPANIED WITH A DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF THE FAITH, SANDSTAD INVITES US ALL TO BECOME PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT WE BELIEVE AND PRACTICE IN ORDER TO CHERISH, TRANSMIT AND RADIATE THE BEAUTY OF THE CATHOLIC HERITAGE. “What earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too, and it cannot be all of a sudden entirely forbidden or even considered harmful. It behooves all of us to preserve the riches which have developed in the Church’s faith and prayer, and to give them their proper place.” -Pope Benedict XVI- Vatican City
The Lord Jesus Christ intended his kingdom present on earth, the Church of God, to be one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. Prior to the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century, history tells of the most egregious division in the Church between the Latin West and Byzantine East in AD 1054 and following. How can it be that Catholics and Orthodox share a thousand years of ecclesial life together in one faith, sacramental order, and hierarchical government, only to have that bond of communion broken? Historians and theologians throughout the years have spilled much ink in recounting the causes and effects of this dreadful and heart-wrenching division, and among the many debates that exist between Catholics and Orthodox, none are as vital to the task of reconciliation as the subject of the papacy. In The Papacy: Revisiting the Debate between Catholics and Orthodox, Erick Ybarra examines sources from the first millennium with a fresh look at how methodology and hermeneutics plays a role in the reading of the same texts. In addition, he conducts a detailed investigation into the most significant points of history in order to show what was clearly accepted by both East and West in their years of ecclesiastical unity. In light of this clear evidence, the reader of The Papacy is free to decide whether contemporary Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy has maintained the heritage of the first millennium on the understanding of the Papal office.
Jacob chuckled and shook his head as he took another sip of his flip. He never thought he would make it to forty, especially after joining Robert Rogers Independent Company of Rangers. As a young Ranger, he learned the new tactics of warfare as he was thrust into what would be called the French and Indian War. In some tavern conversations, he had been asked why he joined, and to be perfectly honest, at least at the beginning, it had been for revenge. He wanted to get back at the Indians allied with the French for taking his family. Over time, though, he would fight with and for his fellow Rangers to survive and win.
Vitamins are a group of physiologically very important, chemically quite complex organic compounds, that are essential for humans and animals. Some vitamins and other growth factors behave as antioxidants, while some can be considered as biopigments. As their chemical synthesis is laborious, their biotechnology-based synthesis and production via microbial fermentation has gained substantial interest within the last decades. Recent progress in microbial genetics and in metabolic engineering and implementation of innovative bioprocess technology has led to a biotechnology-based industrial production of many vitamins and related compounds. Divided into three sections, this volume covers: 1. water-soluble vitamins 2. fat-soluble vitamin compounds and 3. other growth factors, biopigments, and antioxidants. They are all reviewed systematically: from natural occurrence and assays, via biosynthesis, strain development, to industrially-employed biotechnological syntheses and applications.
What is the Socratic Method? How can we bring the Socratic Method into the middle school and high school classroom? How does a teacher lead a Socratic discussion and develop the discussion skills of students? Using passages from the works of Plato and Xenophon, Teach Like Socrates answers each of these questions, clearly explaining the most famous and the most misunderstood teaching method in the world. Unrivaled as a constructive vehicle for critical thinking and problem solving, the Socratic Method can be brought into the classroom every day for the inductive exploration of ideas and scaffolded problem solving as well as for cooperative discussion. Teach Like Socrates includes templates, sample lesson plans, discussion games, and example dialogues from students. With this book, every teacher can master the style that leads students to critical thinking, problem solving, and independent learning. Grades 7-12
The terror masters of ISIS are determined to get America's attention. They’ve humiliated the Iraqi Army we trained and seized territory in Iraq that we had secured at the cost of so many American lives. They’ve beheaded American journalists on camera in a direct challenge to the power and resolve of the United States. And now ISIS is calling for "city wolves" across the United States to act on their dedication to the Islamic State’s blood-drenched ideology and murder innocent American citizens at random. Who is ISIS? Where did it come from, and what is driving its successful campaign of murder and conquest? Our government and our media alike seemed to be blindsided by the Islamic State’s blitzkrieg-like advance, which forced American troops back into Iraq. ISIS has conquered a territory roughly the size of the state of Indiana, rules over eight million terrorized souls, and has even revived the practice of legal slavery. And yet the true motivations, inner workings, and future plans of this terror state and its mysterious caliph seem almost as obscure as when ISIS first burst onto the world scene. In ISIS Exposed, veteran investigative reporter Erick Stakelbeck gets inside the story of the new caliphate and reveals just how clear and present a threat it is.
The current volume continues the tradition of the Organic Syntheses series, providing carefully checked and edited experimental procedures that describe important synthetic methods, transformations, reagents, and synthetic building blocks or intermediates with demonstrated utility in organic synthesis. These significant and interesting procedures should prove worthwhile to many synthetic chemists working in increasingly diverse areas. A trusted guide for professionals in organic and medicinal chemistry in academia, government, and industries, including pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, agrochemicals, and biotechnological products.
Antipsychotic medications are sometimes imposed on psychiatric patients deemed dangerous to themselves and others. This is based on the assumption that treatment is safe and effective, and that recovery depends on biological adjustment. Under new laws, patients can be required to remain on these medications after leaving hospitals. However, survivors attest that forced treatment used as a restraint can feel like torture, while the consequences of withdrawal can also be severe. A brave and innovative book, Tranquil Prisons is a rare academic study of psychiatric treatment written by a former mental patient. Erick Fabris's original, multidisciplinary research demonstrates how clients are pre-emptively put on chemical agents despite the possibility of alternatives. Because of this practice, patients often become dependent on psychiatric drugs that restrict movement and communication to incarcerate the body rather than heal it. Putting forth calls for professional accountability and more therapy choices for patients, Fabris's narrative is both accessible and eye-opening.
Classical solutions play an important role in quantum field theory, high-energy physics and cosmology. Real-time soliton solutions give rise to particles, such as magnetic monopoles, and extended structures, such as domain walls and cosmic strings, that have implications for early universe cosmology. Imaginary-time Euclidean instantons are responsible for important nonperturbative effects, while Euclidean bounce solutions govern transitions between metastable states. Written for advanced graduate students and researchers in elementary particle physics, cosmology and related fields, this book brings the reader up to the level of current research in the field. The first half of the book discusses the most important classes of solitons: kinks, vortices and magnetic monopoles. The cosmological and observational constraints on these are covered, as are more formal aspects, including BPS solitons and their connection with supersymmetry. The second half is devoted to Euclidean solutions, with particular emphasis on Yang–Mills instantons and on bounce solutions.
As antibacterial compounds, bacteriocins have always lived in the shadow of those medically important, efficient and often broad-spectrum low-molecular mass antimicrobials, well known even to laypeople as antibiotics. This is despite the fact that bacteriocins were discovered as early as 1928, a year before the penicillin saga started. Bacteriocins are antimicrobial proteins or oligopeptides, displaying a much narrower activity spectrum than antibiotics; they are mainly active against bacterial strains taxonomically closely related to the producer strain, which is usually immune to its own bacteriocin. They form a heterogenous group with regard to the taxonomy of the producing bacterial strains, mode of action, inhibitory spectrum and protein structure and composition. Best known are the colicins and microcins produced by Enterobacteriaceae. Many other Gram-negative as well as Gram-positive bacteria have now been found to produce bacteriocins. In the last decade renewed interest has focused on the bacteriocins from lactic acid bacteria, which are industrially and agriculturally very important. Some of these compounds are even active against food spoilage bacteria and endospore formers and also against certain clinically important (food-borne) pathogens. Recently, bacteriocins from lactic acid bacteria have been studied intensively from every possible scientific angle: microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology and food technology. Intelligent screening is going on to find novel compounds with unexpected properties, just as has happened (and is still happening) with the antibiotics. Knowledge, especially about bacteriocins from lactic acid bacteria, is accumulating very rapidly.
In the late nineteenth century, the disintegration of the silver-mining economy that had survived since the colonial period effected fundamental economic and social changes in southern Bolivia. The changes took three forms: increased conflict between peasants and elites, expanded concentration of land into large estates, and worsened labor conditions among the peasants. This study concentrates on the four provinces in the department of Chuquisaca, using them as case studies of how and why rural peoples adapted to and resisted the changes in their lives. Resistance took many forms: strikes, rebellions, insurrections, court challenges, banditry, and flight. In the reactions to change in these provinces, the author sees certain common characteristics that transcend the region and can be discerned in other parts of Latin America. On the basis of the Chuquisaca experience, he also questions the validity of current theories of peasant resistance and rebellion. The author describes the reactions of the oligarchy based in Sucre, the capital, to the decline of silver as Bolivia's major export, showing how they attempted to regain their preeminent financial and political position by a number of strategies, notably the expansion of the hacienda system. This expansion gave rise to different problems in each of the four provinces: in Yamparaez, fierce resistance by the Indian communities to any changes; in Cinti, violent labor disputes brought on by the creation of enormous agro-industrial estates; in Azero, Indian attempts to escape debt peonage by migrating or by joining Franciscan missions; and in Tomina, widespread banditry. The final chapter compares and contrasts the various forms of rural resistance in the context of their social, economic, and cultural foundations.
