The repertoire of the early Viennese ballroom was highly influential in the broader histories of both social dance and music in nineteenth-century Europe. Yet music scholarship has traditionally paid little attention to ballroom dance music before the era of the Strauss dynasty, with the exception of a handful of dances by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. This book positions Viennese social dances in their specific performing contexts and investigates the wider repertoire of the Viennese ballroom in the decades around 1800, most of which stems from dozens of non-canonical composers. Close examination of this material yields new insights into the social contexts associated with familiar dance types, and reveals that the ballroom repertoire of this period connected with virtually every aspect of Viennese musical life, from opera and concert music to the emerging category of entertainment music that was later exemplified by the waltzes of Lanner and Strauss.

Since the end of World War II, democracies typically fell apart by coup d'?tat or through force. Today, however, they are increasingly eroding at the hands of democratically elected incumbents, who seize control by slowly chipping away at democratic institutions. To better understand these developments, this book examines the role of personalist political parties, or parties that exist primarily to further their leader's career as opposed to promote a specific policy platform. Using original data capturing levels of personalism in the parties of democratically elected leaders from 1991 to 2020, The Origins of Elected Strongmen shows that the rise of personalist parties around the globe is facilitating the decline of democracy. Personalist parties lack both the incentive and capacity to push back against a leader's efforts to expand executive power. As such, leaders backed by personalist parties are more likely to succeed in their efforts to dismantle institutional constraints on their rule. Such attacks on state institutions, in turn, reverberate throughout society, deepening political polarization and weakening supporters' commitment to democratic norms of behaviour. In these ways, ruling party personalism erodes horizontal and vertical constraints on a leader, ultimately degrading democracy and raising the risk of democratic failure.
EKA, A Spiritual EKA the book is a song, Erica's song, a spiritual, sung about her life and God; how she followed her spirituality, her feelings, the waiting, worrying, then knowing the way, heart singing, through many passages in her long, long life. Erica Maria Johanna Grossgerge was born in the German capitol of Berlin on the first day of January, nineteen hundred and eleven: 1/1/11. Her life spans most of the twentieth century and she considers herself blessed to have met so many people who have been spiritual figures important to the world's well-being. As a child in Berlin, she saw the suffering from World War One; the crippled soldiers, the food rationing, the violent political turmoil in the Weimar Republic, and an infamous inflation rate that could double in hours. As a young adult she studied business and took English courses. First employed by an American, then a British company, she drifted towards the English speaking world. She saw the film "Showboat," and Robeson's songs of the movie convinced her that America was the place she wanted to live, simply because they sang such sweetly spiritual music there. In 1931, at the age of twenty, Erica moved from Berlin to Munich. There she met and became engaged to the son of an American diplomat, soon following him to England to work as an au pair while he attended Cambridge. The university was a truly international place, and she found delight in making the global friendships that she would keep throughout their lives. While in America at Stanford University in 1938, where her husband taught German and studied for his PhD, Erica was introduced to Sufi thought and she found the first true path that resonated with her spirituality, which she has developed throughout her long life.
