Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,3, University of Heidelberg (Institut für Anglistik), course: Hauptseminar Functional Syntax, language: English, abstract: In this term paper I will investigate the structure of English sentences with the subject notion as a starting point. It presents a classical notion to analyse clauses and sentences but how exactly can a subject be defined? For this purpose, I will show that the notion is not detailed enough and suggest a distinction into grammatical, logical and psychological subject. This proves useful to analyse sentences which at first glance do not appear to have any subject at all. In a next step I will focus on features of the grammatical subject according to the Cambridge Grammar of the English language (2005). The discussion will prove that the properties given for grammatical subjects do not constitute a fixed frame which sharply distinguishes between elements eligible to be subjects and others that are not. Instead I will argue that the subject category is best analysed as a prototype category and that its features have prototypical character. The second section is concerned with different ways of accounting for particular structures of language. If various syntactic functions can appear at the beginning of sentences then why does a speaker choose a particular construction instead of another? I will argue that this question is closely related to analyses of clauses, sentences and utterances going beyond a mere subject vs. predicate dichotomy. I will start with a discussion of the thematic structure of sentences and clauses and introduce the distinction of topic and comment. The second step complements the thematic structure of language with the information structure, in which constituents can be labelled ‘given’ and ‘new’. This analysis also considers the intra- and extra-linguistic context of clauses and sentences and can thereby account for a fair share of speaker-choices between differing constructions. Since there are still some cases that cannot be explained by looking at the information structure, I will then present the notion of perspective as very helpful. Taking together these different levels of analysis one is enabled to account for a large quantity of possible constructions in the English language.
Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1, University of Marburg (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Proseminar Syntax, language: English, abstract: In this term paper, I will deal with some aspects of Small Clause (SC) analysis in English. The first chapter will explain what SCs are and present a general overview of their position in sentences. Furthermore I will briefly introduce a controversial analysis and consider the advantages of the SC analysis, as opposed to a predication analysis for example. Therefore several constituent tests will be applied to show that SCs can really function as syntactic units. Some semantic aspects will also be discussed to prove that they should be treated as units. In the next chapter I will introduce different types of SCs. German will be considered as well and a comparison of both English and German SCs will be presented. The argument for the existence of German SCs is very similar to the English. For this reason I will not present the line of reasoning once more but simply assume the same syntactical phenomenon for German as well (for a more detailed analysis of German Small Clauses see Staudinger 1997: 111-115). It will be argued that English offers some more possible constructions with SCs than German. This observation leads to the conclusion that there are some significant differences between the two languages. In a last step a possible analysis for the internal structure of Small Clauses will be presented. The need for a special analysis will be explained with respect to case-assignment. Then the suggested analysis will be applied to the presented types in unmarked word order to see if it is appropriate in practice. I will focus mainly on English here because an analysis of German SCs has to put up with different problems. Some of these struggles will also be discussed here. In the conclusion the results of the previous chapters will be sum

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Heidelberg (Institut für Anglistik), course: Hauptseminar "The Gothic", language: English, abstract: Undoubtedly, religion plays an important role in early Gothic literature. In most cases this does not seem a positive one as can be seen at first glance in Matthew G. Lewis’ The Monk (1796). Most likely this also reflects a tendency of the postenlightenment period in which it was written. However, it is interesting to ask how the view on religion and its role in Gothic texts developed in the 18th century. Therefore, I will compare The Monk to Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897) written roughly a hundred years later, which gives a more sophisticated view on religion. In order to structure the wide topic of religion I will present three different perspectives of religion: the societal, the institutional, and the theological. These three strands will first be traced in The Monk and as a second step in comparison to it in Dracula. The theological perspective on religion in Stoker’s novel will be allowed more room as this is at the heart of the question whether religion receives a positive or a negative reputation in Dracula. I will argue that religion in The Monk but also in Dracula is indispensable. Furthermore, I will give evidence for the thesis that religion in Dracula is not merely reduced to an apotropaic device against vampires but has a high significance for the whole of the characters’ lives. This is further emphasised in the last part of the paper, in which I will compare the endings of both novels. As the different Christian denominations have already been researched in depth, I will only briefly touch on this subject and mainly focus on Christian religion as such.

These essays propose “a new and richly detailed engagement between Judaism and the political” (Jewish Book World). Judaism, Liberalism, and Political Theology provides the first broad encounter between modern Jewish thought and recent developments in political theology, arguing in opposition to impetuous associations of Judaism and liberalism and charges that Judaism cannot engender a universal political order. The vexed status of liberalism in Jewish thought and Judaism in political theology is interrogated with recourse to thinking from across the Continental tradition. “This collection of essays, which examines political theology from the distinct perspective of Jewish philosophy, could not be timelier or more useful for scholars and students navigating what is often viewed as very dense and difficult material.”—Claire Elise Katz, Texas A&M University

Applying organization theory to public and governance organizations, Organization Theory and Governance for the 21st Century presents readers with a conscious and thoughtful awareness of the history and evolving nature of organizations. Authors Sandra Parkes Pershing and Eric Austin address emerging theories rarely touched upon in competing titles, and take a deeper look into assumed theories to give the student a chance to critically consider the consequences these embedded assumptions have for organizational practice. By providing a consistent theoretical grounding and a clear focus on post-traditionalist thinking, the book gives students the background they need to analyze organizational settings and take effective action in the unique setting of contemporary governance.
Over the past several years there has been increasing information in the medical literature regarding the health benefits of a Mediterranean diet. Clinicians may not be informed on advances in nutrition, and studies have demonstrated that they do not spend much time discussing food as a means for promoting health with patients. The Mediterranean Diet: A Clinician's Guide for Patient Care is an essential new volume that serves as an update and a reference for clinicians on the Mediterranean diet. Specific diseases and the effects the Mediterranean diet have on them are outlined. Diseases and conditions that are outlined include heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, depression, cancer, allergies, asthma, arthritis and diabetes. A detailed analysis of the specific nutrients in a Mediterranean diet and the food groups containing them is also included. A useful guide containing daily meal plans and and an extensive recipe section prepared by a team of dieticians can be found in the patient resources section. The Mediterranean Diet: A Clinician's Guide for Patient Care provides a useful summary of the constituent components and health benefits of a Mediterranean diet to health professionals.

Discussed are ways protozoans establish their intracellular niche, how they activate macrophage effector functions, what th
Drought is one of the likely consequences of climate change in many regions of the world. Together with an increased demand for water resources to supply the world's growing population, it represents a potentially disastrous threat to water supplies, agriculture and food production, leading to famine and environmental degradation. Yet predicting drought is fraught with difficulty. The aim of this book is to provide a review of the historical occurrence of global drought, particularly during the 20th century and assess the likely potential changes over the 21st century under climate change. This includes documentation of the occurrence and impacts of major 20th century drought events and analysis of the contributing climatic and environmental factors that act to force, prolong and dissipate drought. Contemporary drought is placed in the context of climate variability since the last ice age, including the many severe and lengthy drought events that contributed to the demise of great civilizations, the disappearance of lakes and rivers, and the conversion of forests to deserts. The authors discuss the developing field of drought monitoring and seasonal forecasting and describe how this is vital for identifying emerging droughts and for providing timely warning to help reduce the impacts. The book provides a broad overview of large scale drought, from historic events such as the US Dust Bowl and African Sahel, and places this in the context of climate variability and change. The work is soundly based on detailed research that has looked at drought occurrence over the 20th century, global drought monitoring, modelling and seasonal prediction, and future projections from climate models.

For centuries the prevailing western worldview has been built upon the materialistic, mechanical model of Isaac Newton - a clockwork Universe composed of separate particles of matter interacting according to precise physical laws and existing within objective dimensions of space and time. This model has long succeeded in describing many facets of our multi-faceted reality, but increasingly since the revelations of Einstein and the paradigm-crushing implications of quantum physics, Newton's world is quietly fading from view and being replaced by a more spiritual science. Topics covered include: Quantum Physics, Consciousness, The Holographic Universe, Morphic Fields, The Human Energy Body, Psychoneuroimmunology, Chi, Chakras, Meridians, Acupuncture, Auras, Telepathy, Psychokinesis, Remote Viewing, Precognition, Out of Body Experiences, Near Death Experiences, Entheogens, Death, Ghosts, Reincarnation, God, Tao, Brahma, Void, Infinite Consciousness, and Oneness
THE BANKERS’ SECRET This book will take you on a rollicking ride through the foreclosure explosion starting in 2008 and continuing through the present time. Alternately hilarious, poignant, tragic, and mysterious, the story introduces real-life doppelgängers and the original MERS virus. Told as he experienced it by the litigator known as the “Foreclosure Destroyer,” who exposed the bankers’ practice of robo-signing, he leads you to the inner sanctum and demonstrates with crystal clarity how truly nefarious the big banks are. This work is written by a rebellious person for other rebellious folks with an eye toward starting a rebellion. The author irreverently recounts his personal experiences and those of other lawyers for the 99 percent which, when exposed, led to the government’s investigations of corrupt bank practices in foreclosures across the nation. Included are transcripts of trials, witness statements, and whistleblower affidavits. So too in this book, the reader will find shocking and detailed evidence of criminal wrongdoing by Bank of America and several other banks; Mr. Trent explores the underpinnings of the woefully inadequate punishment of the so-called institutions and their principals and what can be done about it. The author asserts that banks are not too big to fail, and bankers are not too big to jail. From front to back, this book analyzes a haunting mystery, the solution to which will engender outrage in virtually all who learn it. Inquiring minds, indeed, want to know, why IS it that the banks use fake evidence in court as a standard practice? This book answers that question and many others. It will make you laugh. It may make you cry. Hang on and enjoy the ride.
Tumor ablation is the most high profile procedure currently in interventional radiology. This guide sets the standard and is one of the first comprehensive references on the subject. The editors, world-renowned in the field, have assembled recognized international authorities. The skillful combination of depth and practicality makes this text essential for anyone who is involved with and wants to expand their knowledge in the ablation field.
In this study of the relationship between history and belief, the author shows how our underlying commitments--whether religious or ideological--determine which events we find significant enough to remember as "history", yet how those same beliefs distort our understandings of events, leaving them incomplete and contingent.
Environmental policy domains are increasingly adopting strategies of cooperation over those of conflict. Decision-making processes founded upon collaboration and public participation are receiving more attention and favor and, in turn, engendering multistakeholder environmental partnerships. In his thoughtful analysis, Eric C. Poncelet seeks to illuminate the mechanics of these partnerships, especially at the level of social interaction. Drawing on ethnographic research performed with four case study partnerships in the European Union and the United States, Poncelet focuses on the diverging ways that stakeholders think, talk, and conventionally act with regard to the environmental issues at stake. Also explored are the roles of environmental partnerships as sites of personal transformation, where participants_and their perspectives, conceptualizations, and expectations_can and do change. Partnering for the Environment concludes by examining the broader implications of multistakeholder partnerships for the future of environmental decision-making and suggests ways by which these partnerships may be more effectively used and managed.
This book provides deep insights on the fundamentals, applications and perspectives of the Supercritical AntiSolvent (SAS) Precipitation Process. Chapter 1 provides recent (2013-2018) reports on the use of supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) antisolvent for micronization, coprecipitation and fractionation of high-value products for the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Chapter 2 discusses another variant of the SAS precipitation process called Supercritical fluid extraction of emulsions (SFEE). This chapter provides recent data from 2016-2018 reports investigation of supercritical extraction of emulsions (SFEE) to encapsulate compounds of great interest to the food and non-food industry. Chapter 3 details the design and construction of a SAS Precipitation equipment. Chapter 4 presents experimental results regarding the validation of the supercritical particle formation equipment. Chapter 5 shows the effects of process parameters during particle precipitation using Combined High Turbulence Extraction Assisted by Ultrasound and Supercritical Antisolvent Fractionation (SAF) processes applied to semi-defatted annatto seeds, as a model raw material plant, were investigated. Chapter 6 shows experimental results regarding the process Ultrasound Emulsification Assisted by Nitrogen Hydrostatic Pressure (UEANHP), during the emulsification preparation step of the Supercritical Fluid Extraction of Emulsions (SFEE) process, one of the options of the SAS Precipitation-based process. Finally, Chaptesr 7 and 8 present some perspectives about the economics and process integration with other processes aiming the development of novel conceptual biorefinering approaches for plant materials valorization.
This book examines the relationship between mobility, lived religiosities, and conceptions of divine personhood as they are preserved in textual corpora and material culture from Israel, Judah, Egypt, and Mesopotamia. By integrating evidence of the form and function of religiosities in contexts of mobility and migration, this volume reconstructs mobility-informed aspects of civic and household religiosities in Israel and its world. Readers will find a robust theoretical framework for studying cultures of mobility and religiosities in the ancient past, as well as a fresh understanding of the scope and texture of mobility-informed religious identities that composed broader Yahwistic religious heritage. Cultures of Mobility, Migration, and Religion in Ancient Israel and Its World will be of use to both specialists and informed readers interested in the history of mobilities and migrations in the ancient Near East, as well as those interested in the development of Yahwism in its biblical and extra-biblical forms.

In 1976 I wrote a monograph on lysosomes (Lysosomes: A Survey, Springer Verlag, Vienna) that was intended as an up-to-date, comprehensive survey. Whatever success I may have achieved then in fulfilling that intention, even the effort now would be foolhardy. The literature has grown so rapidly in the past decade that I certainly could not even read all of the essential papers, let alone understand and analyze them. My goal here, therefore, is simply to introduce the major features of lysosomes at a level I hope will be useful both to I;ldvanced students and to researchers interested in obtaining a broad background. This is in keeping with the design of the Cellular Organelles series: the series is more a set of advanced texts than of review monographs. This design carries with it the decision not to support each point by refer ences to the original literature. I apologize for the injustice involved in such a decision but feel that in any event it would be impossibly unwieldy to cite, adequately and in a balanced manner, the contributions of the vast network of researchers responsible for the information upon which I draw.
