Most anthropologists agree that a comprehension of adaptation and adaptive processes is central to an understanding of human biological and behavioural systems. However, there is little agreement among archaeologists, cultural anthropologists, and human biologists as to what adaptation means and how it should be analyzed. Because of this lack of a common underlying theory, method, and perspective, the subdisciplines have tended to move apart, and anthropology is no longer the integrated science envisaged at its inception in the nineteenth century. In this book, the authors–both biological and cultural anthropologists–use a common theoretical framework based on recent evolutionary, ecological, and anthropological theory in their analyses of biological and social adaptive systems. Although a synthesis of the subdisciplines of anthropology lies somewhere in the future, the original essays in this volume are a first attempt at a unified perspective.

Twelve days of the Infanta Margarita is a fiction but it is so well supported that it is hard to believe that it is not true. The evidence both amazes and delights, much of it is fact, some is legend, some fairy story, some children's games, but the most important are two portraits, "Las Meninas' and "The Rokeby Venus" by the Spanish painter Diego de Velasquez . The story begins in the princess's 15th year when she refuses to be a subject for another portrait in formal court dress and, to make a point, she insists she will be painted in the nude. The story then proceeds through the sequence of gifts that we know in the Carol "The Twelve days of Christmas" starting with the partridge and ending with the twelve lords a-leaping. The work is a performance-piece for a small vocal group. A narrator provides the continuing thread of the story which is supported by a number of musical arrangements most of which are based upon familiar Irish and Scottish airs. As few as three can perform the work and as many as twelve. It has been successfully presented in different venues from coffee shop to concert hall. The performance time is about ninety minutes.

Despite appearing in twenty-eight movies in little over a decade, Carole Landis (1919-1948) never quite became the major Hollywood star her onscreen presence should have afforded her. Although she acted in such enduring films as A Scandal in Paris and Moon over Miami, she was most often relegated to supporting roles. Even when she played the major role in a feature, as she did in The Powers Girl and the film noir Wake Up Screaming!, she was billed second or third behind other actors. This biography traces Landis's life, chronicling her beginnings as a dance hall entertainer in San Francisco, her career in Hollywood and abroad, her USO performances, and ultimately her suicide. Using interviews with actors who worked with Landis, contemporary movie magazines and journals, and correspondence, biographer Eric Gans reveals a tragic figure whose life was all too brief. Landis's big break came in 1940 with Hal Roach's One Million B.C. She appeared in thirteen Twentieth Century-Fox pictures between 1941 and 1946. In 1942-1943, Landis entertained troops in England and North Africa in the only all-female USO tour. The trip led to her memoir, Four Jills in a Jeep, and a Fox movie of the same title. After her last American film in 1947, she completed two projects in England while having an affair with married actor Rex Harrison. Tormented by a love that could not lead to matrimony and depressed about growing older, she took a fatal drug overdose on July 5, 1948.

Eric Chelstrom offers a unique account of how consciousness is formative of the social world-that is, in some cases our collectively thinking something to be the case is what makes it so. For instance, that the money one uses on a daily basis is worth something is not because of its physical characteristics, but because we believe that those physical traits, printed by the right institutions, make it so. Our institutions only have authority because we believe they do. This book promotes a position between atomism and collectivism. Chelstrom argues that there is, strictly speaking, no such thing as collective consciousness. Further, this book disputes the atomistic conception of the human subject, the view that individuals are like islands unto themselves, able to develop their capacities independent from others, and free of necessary relations to others. The resulting analysis in the work offers a strong challenge to common interpretations of the philosophy of Edmund Husserl. Social Phenomenology is primarily written for phenomenologists concerned with the social world. When two people, including a police officer, are found dead at a trucking company parking lot in New York City, Detectives Pamela Shakur and Andy O'Toole are called in to solve the case. The detectives quickly identify a witness, Albert Franklin, who saw the killings from his apartment window. But they keep running into one dead end after another. And when Franklin disappears, they suspect he, too, may now be dead.
