In 1976 I wrote a monograph on lysosomes (Lysosomes: A Survey, Springer Verlag, Vienna) that was intended as an up-to-date, comprehensive survey. Whatever success I may have achieved then in fulfilling that intention, even the effort now would be foolhardy. The literature has grown so rapidly in the past decade that I certainly could not even read all of the essential papers, let alone understand and analyze them. My goal here, therefore, is simply to introduce the major features of lysosomes at a level I hope will be useful both to I;ldvanced students and to researchers interested in obtaining a broad background. This is in keeping with the design of the Cellular Organelles series: the series is more a set of advanced texts than of review monographs. This design carries with it the decision not to support each point by refer ences to the original literature. I apologize for the injustice involved in such a decision but feel that in any event it would be impossibly unwieldy to cite, adequately and in a balanced manner, the contributions of the vast network of researchers responsible for the information upon which I draw.

More than at any previous moment in history, nature and ecological systems are in human hands, dependent on human efforts. The earth is an interconnected and interdependent global ecosystem, and change in one part of the system often causes unexpected change in other parts. Atmospheric, oceanic, wetland, terrestrial and other ecological systems have a finite capacity to absorb the environmental degradation caused by human behavior. The need for an environmentally sound, sustainable economy to ease this degradation is evident and urgent. Policies designed to stimulate economic development by foregoing pollution controls both destroy the long-term economy and ravage the environment. Over the years, we have sometimes drawn artificial distinctions between the health of individuals and the health of ecosystems. But in the real world, those distinctions do not exist.

The book includes several maps (geology, topography, hydrology), the survey of the caves and a brief description of the Ankarana Kingdom.

My name is Eric Atno. I live in San Diego, California. I was in the U.S. Navy/Naval Reserves for twenty-six years. I achieved the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. By definition I am a subject matter expert. Most of my time was spent at sea or underway. It is a lifestyle that most normal people find hard to understand. My book is a sailor's eye view in to this strange and unnatural existence. I was a prolific writer while I was underway and overseas. I was told many times that I should write a book. I finally decided to do just that. The process has taken me a few years. I write exactly how I speak. I am real. My story is real (mostly). I take the reader on a twenty-six-year odyssey around the world and back in peace and at war. I take you places that are comical and tragic. It's not just a collection of sea stories. Any retired swab jockey can do that. There are plenty of books out there about the Navy, tactics and warfare. The difference between me and the great Mr. Tom Clancy is that I actually did this stuff. This story is told through a third person or alter-ego which allows me some deniability and freedom to share my stories. I thank you, most humbly, for your time. Enjoy!
