Eric Leif DaVietnamesen was raised as a Southern Baptist and Mormon convert, although he was always a non-believer. However, like everyone else in his blue collar surroundings, he believed in America, the military, anti-Communism, and, although too young to vote, Senator Barry Goldwater when he ran for president in 1964. Then, in the Sixties, he went to college and became swept up in the movements of the times. He came to realize that everything he'd believed about "his war," the Vietnameseetnam War, was wrong. He came to believe that we were more than just on the "wrong side." We were the wrong side. Eventually he was drafted. However, he refused induction into the military, preferring to face five years in prison, the maximum sentence, rather than fight in an immoral war. This memoir describes his journey through the Sixties, from a working class gung-ho Goldwater Republican supporter of the Vietnameseetnam War to a radicalized anti-war actiVietnamesest who was eventually drafted to fight in that war -- but refused to go.

Each internally consistent, but differing in their methodologies, whereby the Census (decennial) data provide a snapshot of how many people live in a given location, and the permanent (hukou) registered household data track each individual based on their hometown, household, urban/rural status, and nationality. This book addresses this chasm which, among other issues, points to the phenomenon of China’s "floating populations", where millions of Chinese spend much if not all of their time living, working, and studying outside their home provinces. The Basic Law codifies what Gonzalo Villalta Puig and Eric C Ip call free market constitutionalism, the logic of Hong Kong’s economic liberty as the freest market economy in the world. This book, which is the outcome of several years of study with the financial support of the General Research Fund of Hong Kong’s Research Grants Council, evaluates the public choice rationale of the Basic Law and its projection on the Hong Kong economy, with a focus on the policy development of economic liberty both internally and externally. In the academic tradition of James M Buchanan’s constitutional political economy, the book opens with a conceptualisation of free market constitutionalism in Hong Kong. It studies the origins of this concept in the 19th-century classically liberal common law and how it developed into a Hayekian laissez-faire convention under British colonial rule, was codified into the Basic Law and is interpreted and applied by the branches of the Government of the Region. Eric Ericson writes of his search for oil in the jungles of Bolivia during communist agitation, the Basque mountains of northern Spain under the dictatorship of Generalissimo Franco, and Nigeria at the dawn of Nigerian Independence and prior to the Biafran War. Gulf Oil's Okan I was the first off-shore discovery in Nigeria and produced one billion barrels of oil by the year 2000. Libby Ericson tells of raising their two sons, and giving birth to their third, in difficult and challenging places and situations, and of the generosity and kindness always found in these very different cultures. Eric retired from Gulf Oil in 1981, began his own consulting business in Boulder, Colorado, and continues his keen interest in the oil and gas industry. They moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1995 where Libby pursues her love of art. They spend their summers in the Colorado Rockies near where they met at the University of Colorado.

Although Chinese medicine is assumed to be a timeless healing tradition, the encounter with modern biomedicine threatened its very existence and led to many radical changes. Prescriptions for Virtuosity tells the story of how doctors of Chinese medicine have responded to the global dominance of biomedicine and developed new forms of virtuosity to keep their clinical practice relevant in contemporary Chinese society. Based on extensive ethnographic and historical research, the book documents the strategies of Chinese medicine doctors to navigate postcolonial power inequalities. Doctors have followed two seemingly contradictory courses of action. First, they have emphasized the unique “Chinese” characteristics of their practice, defining them against the perceived strengths of biomedicine, and producing an ontological divide between the two medical systems. These oppositions have inadvertently marginalized Chinese medicine, making it seem appropriate for clinical use only when biomedical solutions are lacking. Second, doctors have found points of convergence to facilitate the blending of the two medical practices, producing innovative solutions to difficult clinical problems. Prescriptions for Virtuosity examines how the postcolonial condition can generate not only domination but hybridity. Karchmer shows, for example, how the clinical methodology of “pattern discrimination and treatment determination” bianzheng lunzhi, which is today celebrated as the quintessential characteristic of Chinese medicine, is a twentieth-century invention. When subjected to the institutional standardizations of hospital practice, bianzheng lunzhi can lead to an impoverished form of medicine. But in the hands of a virtuoso physicians, it becomes a dynamic tool for moving between biomedicine and Chinese medicine to create innovative new therapies.

In all he comes away with a world experience and a new way of looking at the planet.

Uncertain Allies looks at the U.S. military’s experience in the China-Burma-India (CBI) theater during World War II through the eyes of Joseph Stilwell, the commanding general of all American forces in those three countries. Accomplished historian Eric Setzekorn, focuses on two key themes: uncertain allies and ambiguous missions. Despite being allies, relationships between the Americans and Chinese, as well as the Americans and the British, were marked by a profound lack of trust in the CBI theater. This was particularly problematic because most combat personnel under Stilwell’s command were Chinese. As a result, the lack of trust directly impacted tactical and operational planning. The second reoccurring theme, ambiguous missions, refers to the poorly defined goals for the theater. The CBI’s mission was vague, and Stilwell lacked clear objectives or benchmarks of success. Underlying both themes is the key flaw in Stilwell’s conduct in the CBI theater: a failure to understand the American political context in which he operated. Stilwell advocated for a transactional military and political relationship despite clear indications that President Roosevelt, other political leaders, and the American public at large desired a long-term cooperative relationship. In this context of deep and widespread public support for forging a close and lasting alliance with China, Stilwell’s proposals to make military aid and American support on a quid pro quo basis was an isolated position that inevitably ran into staunch opposition. The result was a dangerous disconnect between American military operations and national policy. Setzekorn, who is fluent in Chinese, relied on a wide variety of sources when writing this penetrating account of the U.S. military’s time in the CBI theater, including Chinese and Japanese language archival material. The declassification of numerous U.S. government sources over the past fifteen years also enables Setzekorn to make a full assessment and analysis of World War II-era strategic thinking and military policy.

The content of this section is drawn from Chinese Medicine: Theories of Modern Practice. Diseases: The diseases section includes many conditions that, though scantily discussed in English language textbooks, are commonly seen in Chinese-language basic theory texts. All 130 commonly presented diseases are included. Acupoints: The acupoints section includes all 365 channel points, as well a selection of commonly used non-channel points. The information provided for each acupoint includes location (as given in modern textbooks), classical location (as given in premodern literature), local anatomy, actions, indications, stimulus applied, and point categories Medicinals: The medicinals section includes a broader range of agents than Western students are normally required to master. Compositional Verification of Concurrent and Real-Time Systems

With the rapid growth of networking and high-computing power, the demand for large-scale and complex software systems has increased dramatically. Many of the software systems support or supplant human control of safety-critical systems such as flight control systems, space shuttle control systems, aircraft avionics control systems, robotics, patient monitoring systems, nuclear power plant control systems, and so on. Failure of safety-critical systems could result in great disasters and loss of human life. Therefore, software used for safety critical systems should preserve high assurance properties. In order to comply with high assurance properties, a safety-critical system often shares resources between multiple concurrently active computing agents and must meet rigid real-time constraints. However, concurrency and timing constraints make the development of a safety-critical system much more error prone and arduous. The correctness of software systems nowadays depends mainly on the work of testing and debugging. Testing and debugging involve the process of de tecting, locating, analyzing, isolating, and correcting suspected faults using the runtime information of a system. However, testing and debugging are not sufficient to prove the correctness of a safety-critical system. In contrast, static analysis is supported by formalisms to specify the system precisely. Formal verification methods are then applied to prove the logical correctness of the system with respect to the specification. Formal verifica tion gives us greater confidence that safety-critical systems meet the desired assurance properties in order to avoid disastrous consequences.
