Every gravestone in every graveyard can frame a story far more complex than the dates engraved upon it. It's common for spouses to be memorialized together as a final affirmation of the commitments made in life, or for bereaved parents to be buried with children who tragically preceded them in death. Close proximity burials of seemingly unrelated figures can similarly reveal the tales of people who otherwise walked together in life, by choice or by chance. For example, the Confederate burial of Union Col. Robert Gould Shaw was certainly meant as a dishonor as Shaw was buried in an unmarked, low-lying coastal trench alongside the fallen African American members of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment he had commanded at Fort Wagner. After the war, however, the men's remains were recovered and reinterred--meaningfully, still together--at the newly commissioned Beaufort National Cemetery. This book explores a dozen unique examples of such side-by-side burials over the course of U.S. history. It begins by describing each of the protagonists' final chapters, before spooling out the tales and significance of their actual journeys to such interwoven endpoints. The evolution of funerary practices and observances in the United States is interspersed throughout, with a special focus on military honors and burials.

Adam Smith was a famous economist and moral philosopher. The book argues that there is a close, moral connection between Smith's systematic thought and his policy recommendations.
A rigorous theory of money, credit, and bankruptcy in the context of a mixed economy, uniting Walrasian general equilibrium with macroeconomic dynamics and Schumpeterian innovation. This book offers a rigorous study of control, guidance, and coordination problems of an enterprise economy, with attention to the roles of money and financial institutions. The approach is distinctive in drawing on game theory, methods of physics and experimental gaming, and, more generally, a broader evolutionary perspective from the biological and behavioral sciences. The proposed theory unites Walrasian general equilibrium with macroeconomic dynamics and Schumpeterian innovation utilizing strategic market games. Problems concerning the meaning of rational economic behavior and the concept of solution are noted. The authors argue that process models of the economy can be built that are consistent with the general equilibrium system but become progressively more complex as new functions are added. Explicit embedding of the economy within the framework of government and society provides a natural, both formal and informal, control system. The authors describe how to build and analyze multistate models with simple assumptions about behavior, and develop a general modeling methodology for the construction of models as playable games.

Half-breed? Mixed race? What do you call the product of an interracial marriage? And how do you relate? Half-n-Half is a very honest account of the daily struggles faced by such individuals, and it will act as an alarm clock, waking people up to the ethnic diversity of this country and the problems that come with it. Eric M. Smith knows firsthand what life is like for the children of interracial marriages. After all, he lived it. Picture in your mind living on the ninth floor of one of the country’s most dangerous housing (Cabrini-Green homes). This was the early setting for Eric Smith and his family. Shootings, drug deals, family fights, police sirens, constant commotion... No, not TV or some modern-day cable program on violence. These were the day-to-day occurrences which were no farther than the floor Eric lived on and definitely not any farther than his own courtyard. And the names flew too: half-breed, high yellow, red bone, yellow nigga, good hair, straight hair, German nigga kids. These are some of the names Eric heard on a daily basis. Those were hood names (White people were a little more subdued, referring to them as “mixed kids” or mulattos). As you read Eric’s story, you will understand the subject of interracial marriage from a whole new perspective, and you will be better prepared to respond to one of the twentieth century’s most significant yet unresolved issues. Now that we are in the twenty-first century, are we any closer to accepting people for who they are before looking at their skin color?

Have the American people grown more politically sophisticated in the past three decades, or do they remain relatively ignorant of the political world? Did a "great leap forward" take place during the 1960s in which our citizenry became involved and adept voters? In this important book, Eric Smith addresses these and other provocative questions that have long befuddled political scientists and policymakers. Much of the current wisdom about American voters derives from an argument advanced in a volume entitled The Changing American Voter, written by Nie, Verba, and Petrocik. In this work, the authors contend that the electorate made a "great leap forward" in political sophistication and ideological thinking between the 1960 and 1964 elections. They argue that people changed in response to a shifting environment, and that, in particular, the surge of protest and ideological rhetoric between 1960 and 1964 engendered a new political savvy and sophistication. In their view, people learned to understand politics better, to relate the issues to the candidates more accurately, and to cast more informed, intelligent votes. In The Unchanging American Voter, Smith takes issue with this portrait of an engaged American citizenry and replaces it with a quite different picture of the voters of this nation. He posits a more bleak political landscape in which the typical voter knows little about politics, is not interested in the political arena and consequently does not participate in it, and is even unable to organize his or her attitudes in a coherent manner. To support this view, Smith demonstrates how the indices by which Nie, Verba, and Petrocik measured levels of sophistication during the 1960s were methodologically flawed and how a closer examination of supposed changes reveals only superficial and unimportant shifts in the ways voters have approached the ballot box since the 1950s. The Unchanging American Voter is an intelligent and original work that provides a new perspective of the American citizenry. It is sure to engender discussion and debate about the dynamics of voting in postwar America.
With the exception of Christianity, the major religions of the world have a peculiar doctrine in common. Though it goes by many names, the belief in Multiple Mortal Probations is held by most of earth's inhabitants, so why isn't it taught among Christianity? Traces of the doctrine can be found in the Bible, and other precious remnants of it are preserved in biblical apocryphal texts. Was the concept of multiple lives once taught among biblical peoples, but lost through the doctrinal biases of the members of the Second Council of Constantinople? If so, could this be the single potentially most unifying doctrine among all the world religions? Authors of this book explore these and other related questions providing an array of historical sources in this unique narrative.
