In The Politics of the Welfare State in Turkey, author Erdem Yörük provides a politics-based explanation for the post-1980 transformation of the Turkish welfare system, in which poor relief policies have replaced employment-based social security. This book is one of the results of Yörük’s European Research Council-funded project, which compares the political dynamics in several emerging markets in order to develop a new political theory of welfare in the global south. As such, this book is an ambitious analytical and empirical contribution to understanding the causes of a sweeping shift in the nature of state welfare provision in Turkey during the recent decades—part of a global trend that extends far beyond Turkey. Most scholarship about Turkey and similar countries has explained this shift toward poor relief as a response to demographic and structural changes including aging populations, the decline in the economic weight of industry, and the informalization of labor, while ignoring the effect of grassroots politics. In order to overcome these theoretical shortages in the literature, the book revisits concepts of political containment and political mobilization from the earlier literature on the mid-twentieth-century welfare state development and incorporates the effects of grassroots politics in order to understand the recent welfare system shift as it materialized in Turkey, where a new matrix of political dynamics has produced new large-scale social assistance programs.
The father of the legendary Ottoman sultan Suleyman the Magnificent, Selim I ("The Grim") set the stage for centuries of Ottoman supremacy by doubling the size of the empire. Conquering Eastern Anatolia, Syria, and Egypt, Selim promoted a politicized Sunni Ottoman* identity against the Shiite Safavids of Iran, thus shaping the early modern Middle East. Analyzing a wide array of sources in Ottoman-Turkish, Persian, and Arabic, H. Erdem Cipa offers a fascinating revisionist reading of Selim's rise to power and the subsequent reworking and mythologizing of his persona in 16th- and 17th-century Ottoman historiography. In death, Selim continued to serve the empire, becoming represented in ways that reinforced an idealized image of Muslim sovereignty in the early modern Eurasian world.
Private equity-backed leveraged buyout (LBO) and leveraged recapitalisation practices have been on the rise since the early 1970s when the LBO model was first invented. They continue to play a major role for investors for their less transparent and less bureaucratic investment models outside of capital markets, where financial regulations become tighter following the financial crisis of 2008 affecting global capital markets in a chain reaction. Private equity-backed LBOs and leveraged recapitalisations continue to be popular investment models, however they carry risks both at the target company level and on a macroeconomic level due to the interconnectedness of these investments with global capital markets for funding and refinancing of acquisition finance debts. Creditor protection mechanisms of company and insolvency law therefore play a central role in preventing or dealing with failures that may be triggered at the target company level and have detrimental effects for all creditors and the economy. Though the European legal capital system must be critically revisited, England's and Germany's already mature markets and legal systems should help in developing a better interpretation of these rules in developing economies like Turkey, consequently establishing a solid base for this investment practice in these economies.
This study bridges the gap that exists between studies dedicated to the history of slavery in the Western and Islamic worlds. It sets itself the goal of understanding how slavery persisted and then met its end in the Ottoman Empire. It concentrates on the period between 1800-1909 and examines the policies of the Ottoman state regarding slavery both before and after the reform period known as the Tanzimat. It also looks at the British involvement in the issue.

Ülkelerin kalkınmasını sağlamak için bir ülkenin geleceğine yön verecek bireyleri yetiştirecek yükseköğretim kurumlarının eğitim planlamasını yapmak, ulusal ve uluslararası geçerliği olan değerlendirme kriterleri kapsamında gerekli güncelleme ve iyileştirme faaliyetlerinin ele alınması önemlidir. Kalite kavramı, bir şeyin kendinden beklenen gereksinimlerin ne kadarını karşılayıp karşılayamadığının standart kriterler ve bazı ölçümler ile açıklanması olarak ifade edilmektedir. Ulusal ve uluslararası öncelikleri olan yükseköğretim kurumlarının bu yaklaşımdan etkilenmemesi mümkün değildir. Yükseköğretimde kalite güvencesinin çeşitli ülkelerde nasıl geliştiğini inceleyen bu çalışma; Kırıkkale Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü’nde doktora tezi olarak kabul edilmiş ve değişen eğitim politikaları çerçevesinde yükseköğretimde kalite güvencesi süreçlerine fayda sağlayacağı düşüncesiyle kitaba dönüştürülmüştür. “Yükseköğretimde Değişen Eğitim Politikaları Bağlamında Kalite Güvencesi: İngiltere, Kore ve Türkiye Üzerine Bir Analiz” başlıklı tezde; toplum ve eğitim süreçleri, yükseköğretimde değişen eğitim politikaları, pragmatik eğitim politikaları kapsamında yükseköğretimde kalite güvencesinin gelişimi, çeşitli ülkelerdeki yükseköğretimin toplumsal gelişimi ve kalite güvencesi sürecindeki uygulamalar incelenmiştir. Literatürde yapılan çalışmalar incelendiğinde; eğitim, yükseköğretim ve kalite kavramlarının ayrı ayrı ele alındığı görülmektedir ancak çalışmaların sosyolojik kuramlar ve pragmatik eğitim politikaları çerçevesinde yeterince ele alınmadığı gözlemlenmiştir. Bu sebeple çalışmanın alana ve yeni araştırmalara katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir.
