This book examines the international student question by utilizing a holistic and multi-faceted approach to understanding not only the influence of socialization on the international student experience but also presents a historical background to international student contact; the influence of globalization and student mobility; U.S. international student enrollment trends; exploration of research on socialization; socialization theory/theoretical framework; an annotated bibliography of research on socialization/acculturation published in the Journal of International Students; and a research case study that explored the socialization experiences of international students. From the earliest history of international student contact dating back to antiquity to the international students whose socialization experiences were explored in the case study, this book highlights the critical importance of providing socialization parameters and frameworks that enrich the international student experience while providing policy and practice directions to help higher education institutions understand and work better with their international student population. All chapters contribute to the discourse on international student socialization and are geared toward enriching international student socialization experiences and informing higher education policies and practices to better serve and service international students.
