Based on mixed-methods research and ethnographic fieldwork at various sites in Italy, this book examines the relationship between expertise and activism in grassroots environmentalism. Presenting interviews with citizens, activists and experts, it considers activism surrounding infrastructure in urban areas, in connection with water management, transport, tour- ism and waste disposal. Through comparisons between different political environments, the author analyses the ways in which citizens, political activists and technical experts participate in using expertise, shedding light on the effects of this on the structure and composition of social movements, as well as the implications for the mechanisms of participation and the formation of alliances. Bridging the sociology of expertise and contentious politics, this study of the relationship between contentious expertise and democratic accountability shows how conflict transforms, rather than inhibits, expertise production into a ‘contentious politics by other means’. As such, it will appeal to social scientists with interests in social movements, environmental sociology, science and technology studies, and the sociology of knowledge.

Il volume si occupa dell’istituto dell’amministrazione di sostegno, nuova disciplina introdotta nel codice civile con la legge n. 6 del 2004, che ha istituito una nuova figura (quella dell’amministratore di sostegno, appunto) accanto agli altri istituti a tutela delle persone incapaci (interdizione, inabilitazione, incapacità naturale). Secondo quanto previsto dalla legge di riforma, infatti, tutti i soggetti che, a causa di una infermità o di una menomazione fisica o psichica si trovino nell’impossibilità (anche parziale o temporanea) di provvedere ai propri interessi, possono ora essere assistiti da un amministratore di sostegno, appositamente nominato dal giudice. Sono affrontati, tenendo conto della recente normativa e della giurisprudenza formatasi in materia, tutti gli aspetti caratterizzanti questo rivoluzionario istituto, a partire dal procedimento di nomina ad amministratore, per giungere agli effetti, alla responsabilità , fino alle possibili interferenze con altri istituti di diritto privato. Memory of the Argentina Disappearances examines the history of the production, public circulation, and the interpretations and reinterpretations of the Nunca Más report issued by Argentina’s National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons (CONADEP). It was established in 1983 by constitutional president Raúl Alfonsín to investigate the fate of thousands of people who had been disappeared by the state during the seventies. Upon publication in 1984, Nunca Más became a bestseller, was translated into several languages and won greater public importance when the military juntas were brought to trial and the court accepted the report as key evidence. The report’s importance was further enhanced with the adoption of CONADEP and Nunca Más as models for truth commissions established in Latin America, and when it was postulated as a means for conveying an awareness of this past to Argentina’s younger generations. This book contributes to understanding the political processes that led to Nunca Más becoming the way in which Argentines remembered the disappearances and the country’s political violence, and how its meaning is modified by new interpretations. Given the canonical nature of Nunca Más, the book sheds light on the most substantial changes and the continuities in Argentina’s social memory of its recent past.
