The book sets out to examine the concept of 'chav', providing a review of its origins, its characterological figures, the process of enregisterment whereby it has come to be recognized in public discourse, and the traits associated with it in traditional media representations. The author then discusses the 'chav' label in light of recent re-appropriations in social network activity (particularly through the video-sharing app TikTok) and subsequent commentary in the public sphere. She traces the evolution of the term from its use during the first decade of the twenty-first century to make sense of class, status and cultural capital, to its resurgence and the ways in which it is still associated with appearance in gendered and classed ways. She then draws on recent developments in linguistic anthropology and embodied sociocultural linguistics to argue that social media users draw on communicative resources to perform identities that are both situated in specific contexts of discourse and dynamically changing, challenging the idea that geo-sociocultural varieties and mannerisms are the sole way of indexing membership of a community. This volume contends that equating 'chav' with 'underclass' in the most recent uses of the concept on social networks may not be the whole story, and the book will be of interest to sociocultural linguistics and identity researchers, as well as readers in anthropology, sociology, British studies, cultural studies, identity studies, digital humanities, and sociolinguistics.

There are twenty-nine Islamic law states (ILS) in the world today, and their Muslim population is over 900 million. Muslims in these countries--and, to some extent, all Muslims--are ethically, morally, doctrinally, or politically committed to the Islamic legal tradition, a unique logic and culture of justice based on nonconfrontational dispute resolution. In Islamic Law and International Law, Emilia Justyna Powell examines the differences and similarities between the Islamic legal tradition and international law, focusing in particular on the issue of conflict management and resolution. In many Islamic Law States, Islamic law displaces secular law in state governance and shapes these countries' international dealings. Powell considers why some of Islamic Law States accept international courts while others avoid them, stressing throughout that we cannot make blanket claims about such states. Each relationship is context-specific, hinging on the nature of the domestic legal system. Moreover, not all of these states are Islamic to the same degree or in the same way. Secular law and religious law fuse in different ways in different domestic legal systems. Often, the Islamic legal tradition points in one direction, while the Western-based, secularized international law points in another. However, Powell argues that Islamic legal tradition contains elements that are compatible with modern international law. She marshals original data on the legal systems structures in thirty Islamic Law States over the entire course of the post-World War Two era, and she draws from in-depth interviews with Islamic law scholars and leading practitioners of international law, including judges of the International Court of Justice. Rich in empirical evidence, this book will reshape how we think about the relationship between ILS and the international system.

This book provides a clear understanding in formulating stability analysis and state feedback control of retarded time delay systems using Lyapunov’s second method in an LMI framework. The chapters offer a clear overview of the evolution of stability analysis in terms of the construction of a Lyapunov functional and use of the integral inequalities in order to reduce the gap of delay upper bound estimate compared to frequency domain method through existing and proposed stability theorems. Power system engineering problem has been presented here to give readers fair idea on applicability of the model and method for solving engineering problems. Without deviating from the framework of analysis more complex dynamics of the system have been dealt with here that includes actuator saturation and thereby ascertaining local stability for an estimated time-delay and domain of attraction. Nonlinearity in a time-delay system has been dealt with in the T-S fuzzy modeling approach. This book is useful as a textbook for Master’s students and advanced researcher working in the field of control system engineering, and for practicing engineers dealing with such complex dynamical systems. The strengths of the book are lucidity of presentation, lucidity of solution method, MATLAB programs given in the appendix that help the novice researcher to carry out research in this area independently, clear idea about the formulation of desired stability and control problem in a LMI framework, application problem provided can motivate students and researcher to recast their problems in the similar framework easily, helpful for readers to use the stability (stabilization) conditions or formulate their own stability conditions easily for a complicated linear or nonlinear dynamical system.

This publication is aimed to support two MoMoWo traveling exhibitions which will be presented in six European countries in two years (2016-2017): indoor exhibition catalogue “100 Works in 100 Years. European Women in Architecture and Design. 1918-2018”, and outdoor exhibition “Women’s Tale. A Reportage on Women Designers”. Exhibition catalogue 100 Works in 100 Years. European Women in Architecture and Design. 1918-2018 brings together a selection of some of the most significant and representative examples of European architecture and design created by 100 women from the end of the First World War up until today. The number of works is symbolic, as ‘one hundred’ could also mean ‘countless’ as in the Latin word centium. While, the number of authors –each work has a different author– derives from MoMoWo’s choice to represent many different creators, consequently popularising lesser known figures, too. It includes biographies of women architects, civil engineers, furniture and industrial designers, urban planners, interior and landscape designers. It represents the main trends and major ‘schools’ of architecture and design all over Europe. The biographical data covers education and training, professional histories, networks women have operated in, including informal societies, memberships in trade bodies and associations, their profile as international, national, local and regional designers, as well as looking at how women have promoted their work i.e. in exhibitions, publications, competition entries, etc. The catalogue entries are followed by thirteen thematic essays on women architects and designers and by the outdoor exhibition catalogue “Women’s Tale. A Reportage on Women Designers”, where photographs by ten finalists of the MoMoWo Photo competition are presented. Subsequently, texts of the non-literary type are preferred, on the basis that they are ‘authentic’ and closer to ‘real’ language. The everlasting relationship between language and literature is here reassessed starting from two assumptions: literature is the expression of an emphasized perception of reality – be it private, collective, or pertaining to a certain temporal/spatial context; and literary language is language in its utmost form. Following an outline of the philosophy that governs the book, each chapter presents specific insights on the use of the various different literary genres: namely, fiction, poetry and drama. The opportunities offered by translation in the foreign language classroom constitute a recurrent theme throughout the book, although Chapter 5 is entirely devoted to translation criticism. The closing pages put forward a few reflections on assessment. The fundamental behaviour and characterization of neurons on various substrates, using a variety of electronic devices such as transistors and microelectrode arrays will be discussed. Future perspectives discussed in the book include artificial intelligence using biological neural networks and nanoneuromedicine. The authors have considerable experience in biosensor technology, and have pioneered the study of neural populations using biosensors in collaboration with neurophysiologists and neuroendrocrinologists. This book will be invaluable to university neuroscience and analytical chemistry departments and students, academics and physicians will benefit from its accessible style and format.
