Emil White of Big Sur: As Lawrence Ferlinghetti states in the book's introduction, "This is a book for all lovers of that "cult of sex and anarchy"(as Harpers described it) in Big Sur, a cult that really only consisted of Henry Miller and Emil." Emil White was very close to Henry Miller and this book, Emil's story in his own words, gives never before published information on both of their lives. Emil also mentions his relationships with many other artists and writers, including Kenneth Rexroth, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Benny Bufano, Joan Baez, Lord Buckley, Jaime de Angulo, and Lillian Bos Ross. Also included are never before published letters from Anais Nin to Emil regarding her difficult relationship with Henry Miller. Emil's paintings, created in the primitive style, are reproduced in full color. Among his humorous anecdotes and introspective musings, he offers thanks to Henry for encouraging him to paint in the first place. This is a must read for art historians, fans of Henry Miller, or anyone interested in the Art Scene in Big Sur in the 1940's, 50's and 60's.
[Gladwin] accomplished, from the 1920's on, a series of fundamentally important studies of the prehistoric cultures of the region from Texas to California. None of these surveys or excavations was more important than the excavation of Snaketown, in the southern Arizona desert. It provided a wealth of details for a major prehistoric culture, the Hohokam, which previously had been scarcely recognized. It dislodged many long-held dogmas of Southwestern archaeology and provided the basis for a major reorientation in thinking about the nature of the prehistoric occupations of Arizona and adjacent states. . . . [This volume] has remained indispensable for its detailed reporting of house remains, ball courts, canals, cremations, pottery, carved stone, and other artifacts."—Science "The reprint will come as a blessing to many archaeologists who have sought in vain to obtain a copy of the original volume. It now stands as a body of data easily accessible to all workers, and we look forward to a new phase of synthesis of Hohokam archaeology."—American Antiquity
“Forestdale did more than any other single area to validate the emerging concept of a separate Mogollon culture, and in this compilation Haury provides the reader with not only the complete archaeological picture of this valley but also the history of the developemtn of the concept. Any Southwestern archaeologist and readers who want to stay abreast of the details of Nroth American prehistory should read this book.”—American Antiquity Classic site reports establish the Mogollon on their own cultural track distinct from the Anasazi and also document the earliest known association of tree-ring dates with pottery in the Southwest. The excavations of Mogollon sites reported on in this volume were conducted at the early (1939–1941) field schools in Forestdale, Arizona.
Wolf's contributions to optical physics go far beyond his co-writing, with Max Born, the classic Principles of Optics. He introduced spatial coherence, he was the first to describe Gabor's holography, and his work has served as the foundation of about 250 companies and corporate divisions in the English-speaking world. In these 23 essays, two of which are tributes to the life of Wolf, contributors consider aspects of his work such as the polarization of light, the electromagnetic theory of optical coherence, wave descriptions of optical measurements, holographic microscopy, optical physics and psychology, the Wolf effect and the Wolf shift, optical pathlength spectroscopy, the diffractive multifocal focusing effect, phase and information, holography, internal reflection tomography, and nano- optics. Botsch samples current attitudes of southern blue-collar workers, both black and white, toward work and race and questions whether these workers can overcome racial barriers to form a populist-style coalition aimed at improving their shared economic condition. A strong sense of individualism, a general distrust of the government, and a failure to see links between daily personal problems and political choices are major deterrants to political action. In the 1970s, textile workers joined forces with a small band of grassroots activists and organizers and challenged southern cotton textile manufacturers. This chronicle of the rise--and ultimately the failure--of the Brown Lung Association details the interaction of the major participants. Relegation of scholarly apparatus to the notes keeps the narration readable. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
This book presents a systematic account of optical coherence theory within the framework of classical optics, as applied to such topics as radiation from sources of different states of coherence, foundations of radiometry, effects of source coherence on the spectra of radiated fields, coherence theory of laser modes, and scattering of partially coherent light by random media.
Paul Sentes is home from the hospital, recuperating from being shot three times, while he was on a cross in his front yard. He looks forward to a quiet existence but the Unholy Four have other ideas. Previously, they had burned his cross and now they have abducted Paul to perform a demonic ritual with deadly intent. Narrowly escaping with his life, Paul travels to Spain with Bronson to visit a monk, Brother Gregoria. While there, they participate in a march, protesting abortion, when a sniper opens fire on the crowd and a bullet cuts his visit short. Back in the states, Paul looks forward to visiting with people who had camped out on his lawn, and becomes involved in rescuing a young girl from a voodoo cult, a physical confrontation with a Native American and a psychic battle with a shaman.
