The Golden Age and Its Implosion' is the final volume of a trilogy, "The Journey" in which Dr. Emil Steinberger recounts his experiences from childhood to adulthood during and after World War II. In this last volume we follow Emil, after he volunteered for service in the Navy, from Detroit, Michigan to Portsmouth, Virginia where he enters the Navy Medical Corps and serves at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Moving on to his assignment station at the Naval Medical Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland he discovers his passion for basic research and his desire to combine it with a clinical practice in the field of Reproductive Endocrinology. He is swept up in the surge of young people joining the medical ranks with a new sense of optimism and enthusiasm bolstered by a wave of recent medical discoveries and support for research by government agencies like the National Institutes of Health. After returning to Detroit and completing his medical training, he follows a singular and productive career path in Philadelphia where he pursues his clinical and research interests and helps create one of the first multi-disciplinary medical groups. However, his ideas about the purposes and methods of conducting research and delivering medical care are threatened by the views of some of a new breed of hospital bureaucrats. Ultimately, he leaves Philadelphia to create a unique department at an exciting new medical school in Houston, Texas. There he brings together a faculty with varying expertise and experience to work collaboratively on new scientific discoveries and treatments for couples with infertility and other reproductive endocrine disorders. Throughout his life, Emil is repeatedly placed in positions of leadership; in the Navy, at Detroit Receiving Hospital, at Albert Einstein Medical Center, at University of Texas Medical School, and finally at the private Texas Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Endocrinology. He learns important lessons in these positions which he endeavors to pass on to the younger scientists training with him. During the course of his full life and successful professional career, he crystallizes and refines his ideas about research, medicine, and life in general. When he succumbed to lung cancer before finishing this memoir, his wife and life-long soul mate and research collaborator, Anna Steinberger, PhD, completed for us the story of this man's remarkable life.

Safety nets are noncontributory transfer programs targeted to the poor or vulnerable. They play important roles in social policy. Safety nets redistribute income, thereby immediately reducing poverty and inequality; they enable households to invest in the human capital of their children and in the livelihoods of their earners; they help households manage risk, both ex ante and ex post; and they allow governments to implement macroeconomic or sectoral reforms that support efficiency and growth. To be effective, safety nets must not only be well intended, but also well designed and well implemented. A good safety net system and its programs are tailored to country circumstances, adequate in their coverage and generosity, equitable, cost-effective, incentive compatible, and sustainable. Good safety nets are also dynamic and change over time as the economy changes or as management problems are solved and new standards are set. Drawing on a wealth of research, policy, and operational documents from both academia and the World Bank s work in over 100 countries, For Protection and Promotion provides pragmatic and informed guidance on how to design and implement safety nets, including useful information on how to define eligibility and select beneficiaries, set and pay benefits, and monitor and evaluate programs and systems. The book synthesizes the literature to date and enriches it with new examples on various program options cash transfers (conditional and unconditional), in-kind transfers, price subsidies, fee waivers, and public works. It concludes with a comprehensive diagnostic for fitting safety net systems and programs to specific circumstances.

Moms rocking chair rhythm of gospel singing, rocked gospels into me. Boyhood railroad adventures helped recognize adventure in theological insight. Value of professional skill was seen in Dad behind the drug store prescription screen. A summer evening walk through Medora heard feet moving to varying rhythms of gospel singing. Church bells told of the sound of Gods welcoming grace. Such common experiences support uncommon, disciplined, entertaining and exciting scholarship of professors, who presented theology of the familial, in-history, personal, relational GodFather, Son, and Holy Spirit. Their mutuality unified the workings with the natural order that provided for my coming to be, gave saving words and promises of Jesus Christ and, through the Spirit, sustained me in the present and the futurethese three in perfect concert evangelized me. An exciting story to tell.
