God led the way for Carol, Marilyn, and their friends as they were planted, nourished, grew, and bloomed through healthy lifestyles, joys, and sorrows, to become one large family. Youll realize the fun they experienced and how a lifetime relationship became such a precious gift. Marilyn documented Carols and her past experiences and read the manuscript aloud until Carol was physically able to contribute to the storyline. Carol shared her ideas with additional details about her life, health issues, and survival. The Ten and also a few male classmates submitted pieces for The Promised Piece as well. Upon conclusion of the friendship story, Carol compared the process to that of birthing a baby. The usual nine months became ten years for the project to fully develop, with additional time for the book to be published. Marilyn felt the writing process from beginning to end was like an artist painting a beautiful canvas of flowers. It took time to get the proper perspective by patiently sketching then painting each petal, adding color, tone, and texture, and finally upon perfection, the artistic piece was framed and enjoyed. The project concluded with thankfulness to God for giving Carol and Marilyn the motivation and determination to finish The Promised Piece, thus fulfilling their promise to each other.

Set in the South in the late 1960’s, it’s the journey of Joseph Graham’s efforts to find himself and accept himself while facing the injustices of adversaries. They mock his differences: His looks, his speech, and his thoughts are different from the other boys. This brings unwanted attention from the neighborhood bullies. The bullies and the affluent within his community all draw lines in the sand, and Joseph is pushed to the middle. He searches for a way to escape his life of lack. But poverty, anger, and abuse offer no open doors. So, he struggles to stand and fight the slings and arrows of his haters until his moral compass is shattered. Joseph becomes a pawn in the street game of thuggery. Trying hard to prove himself and fit in, he takes on the persona of his alter ego. Through this fictional character he’s able to hide his sorrows in the light. He pretends the hurt doesn’t hurt until he loses himself within his alter ego and spirals out of control; landing at death’s door. All while the bullies continue to sucker punch him with their verbal beat-downs. It wasn’t until he met the one he calls, “The Smartest Man Alive,” that his sun began to shine.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a disease that only affects males, with an incidence of around 1 in 3500 new-born baby boys. Its relentless progress is charterized by loss of the ability to walk by around the age of 10 or 11, leading to a wheelchair life, and dealth from cardiac and respiratory problems usually around the late teens or early twenties. Edward Meryon was the first person to give a full and detailed clinical description of what later research knows as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. His research identified many facets of the condition which we now take for granted, for example that it only affects males, that it is an inherited condition carried in female genes, that it is a disease of the muscle system, and its causes. Until recently, Meryon has not been given credit for his contribution to the subject. In this book, the history of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is traced in detail, and is interwoven with a commentary of Meryon's research which has led to our current understanding of the disease, will full refences and informative, historically relevant illustrations. This book concludes with a summary of the current position regarding diagnosis, prevention through counselling and prenatal diagnosis, and new encouraging approaches to treatment through molecular genetics.
