Renewable energy resources now play an essential role in the energy supply debate, and especially a new interest in wind energy has resulted in the intensified construction of wind farms. Thanks to the growing demand for renewable energy, offshore wind farms (OWFs) are increasingly gaining in popularity, since yields over sea are greater and more reliable than over land. Against this background it is becoming particularly urgent to determine whether and if so to what extent such OWF expansion affects our oceans and local climates. OWFs produce a downstream wind speed reduction, the so-called wind-wake effect, which impacts atmospheric boundary layers, alters local wind characteristics and in turn affects ocean dynamics. This book will help readers to understand in detail these OWF-induced changes in the atmosphere and ocean by analyzing model simulations and measurements. In this context, OWF-induced upwelling and downwelling are key aspects.

The end of apartheid in South Africa broke down political barriers, extending to all races the formal rights of citizenship, including the right to participate in free elections and parliamentary democracy. But South Africa remains one of the most economically polarized nations in the world. In The Politics of Necessity Elke Zuern forcefully argues that working toward greater socio-economic equality—access to food, housing, land, jobs—is crucial to achieving a successful and sustainable democracy. Drawing on interviews with local residents and activists in South Africa’s impoverished townships during more than a decade of dramatic political change, Zuern tracks the development of community organizing and reveals the shifting challenges faced by poor citizens. Under apartheid, township residents began organizing to press the government to address the basic material necessities of the poor and expanded their demands to include full civil and political rights. While the movement succeeded in gaining formal political rights, democratization led to a new government that instituted neo-liberal economic reforms and sought to minimize protest. In discouraging dissent and failing to reduce economic inequality, South Africa’s new democracy has continued to disempower the poor. By comparing movements in South Africa to those in other African and Latin American states, this book identifies profound challenges to democratization. Zuern asserts the fundamental indivisibility of all human rights, showing how protest movements that call attention to socio-economic demands, though often labeled a threat to democracy, offer significant opportunities for modern democracies to evolve into systems of rule that empower all citizens.

In genetically susceptible individuals, the ingestion of gluten and related proteins triggers an immune-mediated enteropathy known as celiac disease (CD). Recent epidemiological studies have shown that 1 in 100 people worldwide suffers from CD—a rate that establishes CD as one of the most common food intolerances. CD patients that eat wheat or related proteins, such as hordeins (barley) and secalins (rye), undergo an immunological response, localized in the small intestine, that destroys mature absorptive epithelial cells on the surface of the small intestine. Currently, the only way to treat CD is the total life-long avoidance of gluten ingestion. Therefore, people that have CD must follow a very strict diet and avoid products that contain wheat, rye, and barley. Avoiding cereals leads to a recovery from the disease and significant improvement of the intestinal mucosa and its absorptive functions. Celiac patients are not in the position to eat some of the most common foods, such as breads, pizzas, and biscuits, or to drink beer and whiskey. Because of the unique properties of gluten, producing good-quality gluten-free products is a big challenge for scientists. Some background in stochastic processes would be useful, but not essential.
