Regarding William Faulkner’s novel, Light in August, the majority of critics view Lena Grove as an insignificant character. It is the intent of this thesis to right the discourse by showing that Lena Grove is a major figure: generally, symbolically, and when considered in her role as a literary device. Generally, Lena Grove functions as an eccentric individual and a Southern folk figure; symbolically she has become a pagan fertility goddess, an “opposite equal” to Joanna Burden, and a Persephone-Kore figure. As a literary device she comprises the entity who most closely offers us a set of “horizons of expectations” closest to a straightforward linear plotline. Even when we are in the “deconstructed” phases of her plotline, that is, embroiled in the construction of one of the other three plotlines, that of Joe Christmas, Byron Bunch or Reverend Gail Hightower, we consistently think of Lena Grove and wonder where she is in her journey across the South and her journey through life. In Light in August, in her own unique manner, Lena Grove is a major figure - ever present.

Though recently diagnosed with intestinal cancer, Saint-Gaudens was revitalized by recreational sports, having realized midcareer there is something else in life besides the four walls of an ill-ventilated studio. The Medicine of Art puts such moments center stage in order to consider the role of health and illness in the way art was produced and consumed. Not merely beautiful or entertaining objects, works by Gilded-Age artists such as John Singer Sargent, Abbott Thayer, and Augustus Saint-Gaudens are shown to function as balm for the ill, providing relief from physical suffering and pain. Art did so by blunting the edges of contagious disease through a process of visual translation. History and Salvation in Medieval Ireland explores medieval Irish conceptions of salvation history, using Latin and vernacular sources from c. 700–c. 1200 CE which adapt biblical history for audiences both secular and ecclesiastical. This book examines medieval Irish sources on the cities of Jerusalem and Babylon; reworkings of narratives from the Hebrew Scriptures; literature influenced by the Psalms; and texts indebted to Late Antique historiography. It argues that the conceptual framework of salvation history, and the related theory of the divinely-ordained movement of political power through history, had a formative influence on early Irish culture, society and identity. Primarily through analysis of previously untranslated sources, this study teases out some of the intricate connections between the local and the universal, in order to situate medieval Irish historiography within the context of that of the wider world.
