This book examines the current thinking on five critical social and political areas in mathematics education. It focuses on material conditions in teaching and learning, and details features of social life and their influence on mathematics teaching, learning and achievement. Following an introduction, the first section addresses equitable access and participation in quality mathematics education. It explores this issue in different contexts and from different ideological perspectives. The second section traces the emergence and development of the notion of activism in mathematics education in theory, in the literature, in research and in practice. The third section then moves on to explore current research on the political forces at work in identity, subjectivity and (dis)ability within mathematics education, showing how emphasis on language and discourse provides information for this research, and how new directions are being pursued to address the diverse material conditions that shape learning experiences in mathematics education. Economic factors behind mathematics achievement form the topic of section four, which examines the political dimensions of mathematics education through the influence of national and global economic structures. The final section addresses distribution of power and cultural regimes of truth, based on the premise that although often deemed apolitical, mathematics and mathematics education are highly political institutions in our society. The book concludes with a summary and recommendations for the future.

Between 1765 and 1836 the household economy of São Paulo was transformed from a subsistence to a market-oriented economy. This transformation was paralleled by dramatic changes within society, existing kinship systems, and the organization of the household. The author suggests that this fundamental change in the mode of production was intentional, engineered by an interested elite of merchants and plantation owners who utilized local government bodies to promote the construction of centralized markets, roads, warehouses, and port facilities. The same group sponsored changes in local administration and land law in order to increase and control the resultant commerce in sugar and coffee. This book, based on household-level census data, looks at economic development at the micro level and analyzes how the change took place at a juncture in history when prior options seemed to disappear.

The postwar government of South Africa, led by H.F. Verwoerd, implemented wide-ranging racial segregation laws, beginning the open policy of apartheid in one of Africa's most prosperous and internationally influential states. In this unique book, Liz Done undertakes an affective thought-provoking nomadic inquiry into the doctoral process in which she engages with the writings of Deleuze, Cixous, Nietzsche, Foucault and many others. The paradox of learning, as thoroughly relational but simultaneously implying the radical specificity of every learner’s experience, is unpacked in a text that is careful to explain the ideas and theories that are mobilised. As a pedagogic intervention, the book seeks to raise questions, not answer them, but ultimately offers a very powerful statement about the value of education as learning and its capacity to transform a life. Academic production is revealed as a situated, embedded, relational, and complex process. The book’s rhizomatic threads include: transgressing linear neopositivist models, doing something different with theory, the importance of free experimentation, and memory as both mobility and freedom. Braidotti’s nomadic subjectivity and Gannon’s refusal to be pinned down in a bid for intellectual purity were also mobilised in the writing of this text. It performs the inclusive potential of Deleuzian and feminist poststructuralist thought, insisting on a scholarship that is about open inquiry, (ad)venture, and learning as multiplicity. It is untimely, as Deleuze might say, in its contemporary relevance.
Climate science paints a bleak picture: The continued growth of greenhouse gas emissions is increasingly likely to cause irreversible and catastrophic effects. Urgent action is needed to prepare for the initial rounds of climatic change, which are already unstoppable. While the opportunity to avert all climate damage has now passed, well-designed mitigation and adaptation policies, if adopted quickly, could still greatly reduce the likelihood of the most tragic and far-reaching impacts of climate change. Climate economics is the bridge between science and policy, translating scientific predictions about physical systems into projections about economic growth and human welfare that decision makers can most readily use but it has too often consisted of an overly technical, academic approach to the problem. Getting climate economics right is not about publishing the cleverest article of the year but rather about helping solve the dilemma of the century. The tasks ahead are daunting, and failure, unfortunately, is quite possible. Better approaches to climate economics will allow economists to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. This book analyzes potential paths for improvement.

Blacks of the Rosary tells the story of the Afro-Brazilian communities that developed within lay religious brotherhoods dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary in Minas Gerais. It shows how these brotherhoods functioned as a social space in which Africans and their descendants could rebuild a communal identity based on a shared history of an African past and an ongoing devotional practice, thereby giving rise to enduring transnational cultures that have survived to the present day. In exploring this intersection of community, identity, and memory, the book probes the Portuguese and African contributions to the brotherhoods in Part One. Part Two traces the changes and continuities within the organizations from the early eighteenth century to the end of the Brazilian Empire, and the book concludes in Part Three with discussion of the twentieth-century brotherhoods and narratives of the participants in brotherhood festivals in the 1990s. In a larger sense, the book serves as a case study through which readers can examine the strategies that Afro-Brazilians used to create viable communities in order to confront the asymmetry of power inherent in the slave societies of the Americas and their economic and social marginalization in the twentieth century.
