Her only salvation, Officer Amber Walkin, who against the eyes of the law takes in Mayma to raise as her own daughter. Her only goal is to give Mayma the best, most normal childhood she can all while seemingly the rest of the world would see Mayma as nothing more than a hunted trophy. Along the way, Mayma will, against Walkin's desire, be witness and befriend those fighting for what they believe to be just. As opposing views are thrown about, the line becomes thinner on who to side with.
Conspiracies, celebrities, and therapies underpin this beguiling short-story collection from Elizabeth Tan. A cat-shaped oven tells a depressed woman she doesn't have to be sorry anymore. A Yourtopia Bespoke Terraria employee becomes paranoid about the mounting coincidences in her life. Four girls gather to celebrate their fabulous underwear. With her trademark wit and slicing social commentary, Elizabeth Tan’s short stories are as funny as they are insightful. This collection cements her role as one of Australia’s most inventive writers ‘This utterly original book will mess with your mind and make you laugh like a drain.‘ Sydney Morning Herald ‘Elizabeth Tan can twist ordinary suburban life into the weirdest shapes.’ The Monthly ‘Tan twists a future that has already arrived with one in the process of arriving.’ The Saturday Paper ‘In a collection of consistent highlights, the brilliance of some stories is particularly blinding.’ Australian Book Review ‘Tan’s evocation of this dreamlike incongruity is playful, reminiscent of Murakami’s blasé surrealism and Coupland’s crafty wryness.’ Sydney Review of Books

Considers relationships between modernist literature and literary criticism and argues that new modernist fiction can bring with it new modes of reading Considers how close reading may change as the study of modernism changes to include recently recovered fiction Asks what reading meant for selected critics of modernist literature around 1930 and around 1960 Offers readings of three new modernist novels: Djuna Barnes’s Nightwood, John Rodker’s Adolphe 1920 and Mina Loy’s Insel Considers key cultural moments of the novels' composition and reception Extends the questions about reading raised by these novels to Samuel Beckett’s Comment c’est / How It Is and Jean Rhys’s short stories Since the late twentieth century, new understandings of modernism have come with new attention to a range of writers. Yet if the academic study of modernism took shape around an older, narrower selection of writers and works, how can its modes of reading be relevant to newly recovered modernist writing? This book considers how close reading may change as the subjects of literary study change. Elizabeth Pender asks what reading meant for critics of modernist literature around 1930 and around 1960, and then what close reading might look like now for three new modernist novels. Djuna Barnes’s Nightwood, John Rodker’s Adolphe 1920 and Mina Loy’s Insel tend to resist some of the strategies of reading that helped construct a narrowed modernist canon at mid-century, such as the pursuit of coherence. These novels offer new thinking about the temporality of reading, style, and the ethics of narration. Reading these novels now suggests that other new modernist fiction, too, may require revisions to vocabularies with which modernist literature has sometimes been read.

Spirit Horse II is the original of Carousel Horse. No single person is in the book. Each character is a mix of different riders, trainers, and volunteers. Some of the incidents really occurred, but are mixed with others that are similar, and some are fiction. Horses were an integral part of healing for the author, following a high-fever staph infection that left her very disabled. The ranch is a conglomerate of many programs run over the years by the author and other equine therapists. The author, while working with a severely abused horse one day, realized that if that animal could live in the small cage of a stall and still learn to trust her and build a new life, so could the author. That is the basis of Spirit Horse. The healing of the author started a program that has expanded to include working with psychiatrists, therapists, physical therapists, special education teachers, and parents, as well as veterans, first responders and their families. Spirit Horse II has joined Horses4heroes to provide vets ride free, a national effort of many member stables and programs to just provide a calm, peaceful moment in the lives of our veterans and their families to help them as they rebuild their lives after experiencing war. Horse owners, performance barns, and therapy or trail-riding stables are urged to join this project to share with our hometown heroes and their families the healing of horses. Whether just grooming, feeding carrots, or riding, horses have healed the author. Anyone who owns or works with horses is urged to join Horses4heroes and give a moment of your joy to others who surely have earned our help and respect.
