The story centres around a collie who lived with a family in a tenement building in a deprived area of a small rural town called Brentwood.The collie becomes overlooked within her human family and ultimately finds herself on the streets forced to fend for herself. She is picked up by the dog catchers and placed in an animal shelter where she waits for her human family to collect her but in vain.She eventually catches the eye of a retired nurse seeking a dog companion and is adopted by her.Her new found family has encountered grief through the premature and tragic death of two members of their family through a drink driving accident. The dog becomes a source of healing and comfort to the various members of the family including Kevin Beth's ten year old great nephew a hyperactive but socially inadequate youngster whose life the dog saves and the bond between boy and dog becomes inseparable.The dog has a part to play in all the lives of this family where hospital life and farm life plays a great part where hurt and woundedness is healed where faith turns tragedy into triumph. Beth's voluntary work in the hospital where she trained involves her faithful collie in serving in the cancer ward as a 'working' dog bringing charm and delight to severely ill children.Beth also comes under the magical spell of her four legged friend when she finds love in her later years.

Yet if the academic study of modernism took shape around an older, narrower selection of writers and works, how can its modes of reading be relevant to newly recovered modernist writing? This book considers how close reading may change as the subjects of literary study change. Elizabeth Pender asks what reading meant for critics of modernist literature around 1930 and around 1960, and then what close reading might look like now for three new modernist novels. Djuna Barnes’s Nightwood, John Rodker’s Adolphe 1920 and Mina Loy’s Insel tend to resist some of the strategies of reading that helped construct a narrowed modernist canon at mid-century, such as the pursuit of coherence. These novels offer new thinking about the temporality of reading, style, and the ethics of narration. Reading these novels now suggests that other new modernist fiction, too, may require revisions to vocabularies with which modernist literature has sometimes been read.

Spirit Horse II is the original of Carousel Horse. No single person is in the book. Each character is a mix of different riders, trainers, and volunteers. Some of the incidents really occurred, but are mixed with others that are similar, and some are fiction. Horses were an integral part of healing for the author, following a high-fever staph infection that left her very disabled. The ranch is a conglomerate of many programs run over the years by the author and other equine therapists. The author, while working with a severely abused horse one day, realized that if that animal could live in the small cage of a stall and still learn to trust her and build a new life, so could the author. That is the basis of Spirit Horse. The healing of the author started a program that has expanded to include working with psychiatrists, therapists, physical therapists, special education teachers, and parents, as well as veterans, first responders and their families. Spirit Horse II has joined Horses4heroes to provide vets ride free, a national effort of many member stables and programs to just provide a calm, peaceful moment in the lives of our veterans and their families to help them as they rebuild their lives after experiencing war. Horse owners, performance barns, and therapy or trail-riding stables are urged to join this project to share with our hometown heroes and their families the healing of horses. Whether just grooming, feeding carrots, or riding, horses have healed the author. Anyone who owns or works with horses is urged to join Horses4heroes and give a moment of your joy to others who surely have earned our help and respect.
