This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 14th Artificial Intelligence Conference sponsored by the Canadian Society for Computational Studies of Intelligence, AI 2001, held in Ottawa, Canada, in June 2001. The 24 revised full papers presented together with 14 posters were carefully reviewed and selected from around 70 submissions. Among the topics addressed are learning, data mining, searching, multi-agent systems, automated deduction, computational linguistics, constraint programming, agent learning, planning, classifier systems, heuristics, logic programming, and case-based reasoning.
The 35 papers in WCRE 2003 reflect the state-of-the-art in software reverse engineering. Reverse engineering examines existing software assets and infers knowledge regarding their code structure, architecture design and development process. Such knowledge is invaluable in the process of maintaining, evolving and otherwise reusing existing software. Equally important, this process enables the consolidation of experiences into "lessons learned" that can shape new software-development practices.
The evolution of the world wide web from a repository of data (in static web pages) to a source of varied distributed services creates exciting opportunities for offering integrated, distributed services over the web, for applications such as comparison shopping, trip planning, supply chain management, complex product configuration, and remote medical record query. However, such opportunities come with their own challenges. Services from different providers need to be integrated into a single composite service that appears as a seamless whole. The syntactic problems of such integration are being addressed by the advent of XML-based standards for information interchange, and web-based exchange protocols like SOAP. However, the promise of service integration will not be delivered, unless services can be integrated semantically as well.

AI 2001 is the 14th in the series of Arti cial Intelligence conferences sponsored by the Canadian Society for Computational Studies of Intelligence/Soci et e - nadienne pour l’ etude de l’intelligence par ordinateur. As was the case last year too, the conference is being held in conjunction with the annual conferences of two other Canadian societies, Graphics Interface (GI 2001) and Vision Int- face (VI 2001). We believe that the overall experience will be enriched by this conjunction of conferences. This year is the \silver anniversary" of the conference: the rst Canadian AI conference was held in 1976 at UBC. During its lifetime, it has attracted Canadian and international papers of high quality from a variety of AI research areas. All papers submitted to the conference received at least three indep- dent reviews. Approximately one third were accepted for plenary presentation at the conference. The best paper of the conference will be invited to appear in Computational Intelligence.
Making Heritage Together presents a case study of public archaeology by focusing on the collaborative creation of knowledge about the past with a rural community in central Crete. It is based on a long-term archaeological ethnography project that engaged this village community in collectively researching, preserving and managing their cultural heritage. This volume presents the theoretical and local contexts for the project, explains the methodology and the project outcomes, and reviews in detail some of the public archaeology actions with the community as examples of collaborative, research-based heritage management. What the authors emphasize in this book is the value of local context in designing and implementing public archaeology projects, and the necessity of establishing methods to understand, collaborate and interact with culturally specific groups and publics. They argue for the implementation of archaeological ethnographic research as a method of creating instances and spaces for collaborative knowledge production. The volume contributes to a greater understanding of how rural communities can be successfully engaged in the management of their own heritage. It will be relevant to archaeologists and other heritage professionals who aim to maximise the inclusivity and impact of small projects with minimal resources and achieve sustainable processes of collaboration with local stakeholders.
An unparalleled assemblage of Archaic black-figure painted pinakes (plaques) was uncovered near Penteskouphia, a village west of ancient Corinth, over a century ago. The pinakes-represented by over 1,200 fragments-and their depictions of gods, warriors, animals, and the potters themselves, provide a uniquely rich source of information about Greek art, technology, and society. In this volume, the findspot of the pinakes is identified in a contribution by Ioulia Tzonou and James Herbst, and the assemblage as a whole is fully contextualized within the Archaic world. Then, by focusing specifically on the images of potters at work, the author illuminates the relationship between Corinthian and Athenian art, the technology used in ancient pottery production, and religious anxiety in the 6th century B.C. The first comprehensive register of all known Penteskouphia pinakes complements the well-illustrated discussion.
