After the death of their son Willie, President Abraham Lincoln and the first lady invited Hartford medium Nettie Colburn Maynard to conduct secret séances at the White House. Even today, believers congregate at the Pine Grove Spiritualist Camp. Author Elaine Kuzmeskus investigates this dramatic, mystical history.

The Narrow Path is about forgiveness. It is easy to say that you forgive someone, but since it is almost impossible to forget when you are offended, "true" forgiveness is extremely difficult to release. Scripture says you should forgive someone who wronged you seventy times seven times. Jesus is not saying to forgive 490 times; he's talking about forgiving in the most extreme situations—for example, the 430 years of the Israelites' captivity in Egypt. The Narrow Path explores a situation when two men meet along a path (one is a murderer, the other the victim) in a place where time has no meaning. Jesus forgave even the people who crucified him (Luke 23:34), but we sometimes cannot forgive even the slightest wrong against us. We must remember that the path to heaven is very narrow, so if you have an unforgiving and bitter heart, you cannot receive the kingdom of heaven. Can you love your enemy enough to forgive him? Overcoming an unforgiving heart cannot be done without the Holy Spirit because he provides the fruit: love, peace, joy, patience, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, kindness, and self-control. The Narrow Path tells the story of a case of forgiving a difficult wrong and repenting and how God forgives us as well.

Elaine is a born-again Christian who experienced death and life after death. The book offers true insight into the reality of heaven and its glory. On October 6, 2016, Elaine was preparing to travel to Europe on a month-long vacation to visit with family and friends. It had been nineteen years since she last visited her youngest son's tomb site, and she was looking forward to the trip. As she worked in her vegetable garden that Thursday afternoon, she heard a voice say, "Call your helper to come over to help you." She said to herself, "I don't need help because I am almost finished." The voice again said, "Call your helper to come over to help you." The second time, she listened to the voice and called for help. Within a half hour of the helper's arrival, Elaine suffered a massive heart attack and died three times. By the grace of God, she was able to dial 911 and request assistance before passing out. Her helper intervened and completed the call. Upon arrival to her home, the EMT's found her on the floor in a pulseless state. She was transported to the local hospital to be pronounced. She was miraculously revived after being deceased for forty-five minutes the first time. She flat lined three more times at the hospital before being medivacked to the trauma center but died again in route. She died again at the trauma center. In reality, she actually died six times. Her survival was nothing short of a divine and miraculous return to life. She was renamed "Ms. Miracle" by the doctors and hospital staff at the trauma center as she sustained no neurological damage after the trauma of dying and being revived six separate times. After her experience in Heaven and upon her return to earth, she realized that the voice she heard that afternoon was the voice of God speaking to her.

Beginning with The Portrait of a Lady, this book shows how, in developing his unique form of realism, James highlights the tragic consequences of his American heroine's Romantic imagination, in particular, her Emersonian idealism. In order to expose Emerson's blind spot, a lacuna at the very centre of his New England Transcendentalism, James draws on the Gothic effects of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe, thereby producing an intensification of Isabel Archer's psychological state and precipitating her awakening to a fuller, heightened consciousness. Thus Romanticism takes an aesthetic turn, becoming distinctly Paterian and unleashing queer possibilities that are further developed in James's subsequent fiction. This book follows the Paterian thread, leading to The Author of Beltraffio and Théophile Gauthier, and thereby establishing an important connection with French culture. Drawing on James's famous analogy between the art of fiction and the art of the painter, the book explores a possible link to the Impressionist painters associated with the literary circle Émile Zola dominated. It then turns to A New England Winter, a tale about an American Impressionist painter, and finds traces leading back to James's initiation prèmiere. The book closes with an exploration of the possible sources of Kate Croy's unspeakable father in The Wings of the Dove and proposes a possible intertext, one that provides direct insight into the Victorian closet.

Patriotism is not a conservative or a liberal thing. Patriotism, as far as I am concerned, is the duty and obligation of every American. On the Supreme Court: There should be a litmus test for Supreme Court and federal court judges, and that test should be their opinion about allowing public access to court proceedings. Let cameras inside the courthouse, or at least allow an audio feed to radio. What are they hiding? On the death penalty: It should be legal and available to courts and juries . . . but it should be used extremely rarely, and only when we are absolutely certain that a fair trial has taken place. On how you look: It’s your business and nobody else’s. Your looks and your life are not a democracy—not everybody gets a vote. Make your appearance and your choices a totalitarian regime—you are the boss. On fun: It isn’t a curse word. It’s actually quite serious business, as it makes the hard times livable and the sad times bearable. Fun should be part of a work environment, too. Stuffed shirts and snobs who can’t stop and laugh at themselves should be banished! In Greta’s company you’re guaranteed to get a fresh dose of common sense and a good hearty rant on many of the most important issues we face today.
