In the aftermath of the Civil War, distraught Connecticut residents turned to Spiritualism as a means of connecting with their lost loved ones. Daniel Dunglas Home of New London held his first public séance as a teenager in 1851, and he reportedly levitated and handled hot coals without injury. Famous Litchfield native Harriet Beecher Stowe and her husband, Calvin, were believers, and Harriet's sister Isabella Beecher Hooker practiced mediumship. After the death of their son Willie, President Abraham Lincoln and the first lady invited Hartford medium Nettie Colburn Maynard to conduct secret séances at the White House. Even today, believers congregate at the Pine Grove Spiritualist Camp. Author Elaine Kuzmeskus investigates this dramatic, mystical history.

This text has been specifically designed to prepare people with previously limited chemical knowledge for entrance into science related courses (such as Foundation and Access courses) which involve chemistry, in higher education. Until now there have been no texts available for use on these courses and this book fills that gap. Access to Chemistry effectively forms a self-study course, which is split into separate modules and units covering the full spread of concepts required for those needing a basic knowledge of chemistry. The material is presented in a friendly and easy-to-use manner which allows the student to pace their acquisition of knowledge and gain increasing confidence in order to succeed in understanding essential relevant concepts. Other useful features of this book include starter diagnostic tests, worked examples and self study tests (with answers) at the end of each unit. In addition to Access or Foundation course students and their tutors, to whom this book will prove essential, it will have an appeal also as a revision text for those needing a 'refresher' after a break in the subject. In addition, it will be of interest to members of the general public who wish to better educate themselves on chemical matters, as it provides a clear and useful insight into areas such as health, home chemicals, business market trends and gardening.
The redoubtable Grandma--this book is a sequel to Grandma Drove the Snowplow--is at it again. After all her hard work collecting the towns garbage and plowing the roads, Grandma deserves a day off--and what better day than Labor Day. All she has to do is sit back and enjoy a nice boat ride with her littlest grandson Billy while her sons catch the lobsters for the town Lobster Bake. But what happens when the waves get choppy, the fog rolls in, and all the boats are in difficulty? Can Grandma take the helm and get the lobsters back to shore in time? More great fun as our intrepid heroine is again placed at the center of small town life and in the middle of a local celebration.
From the National Book Award-winning and National Book Critics Circle Award-winning author of The Gnostic Gospels comes a dramatic interpretation of Satan and his role on the Christian tradition. "Arresting...brilliant...this book illuminates the angels with which we must wrestle to come to the truth of our bedeviling spritual problems." —The Boston Globe With magisterial learning and the elan of a born storyteller, Pagels turns Satan’s story into an audacious exploration of Christianity’s shadow side, in which the gospel of love gives way to irrational hatreds that continue to haunt Christians and non-Christians alike.

The Narrow Path is about forgiveness. It is easy to say that you forgive someone, but since it is almost impossible to forget when you are offended, "true" forgiveness is extremely difficult to release. Scripture says you should forgive someone who wronged you seventy times seven times. Jesus is not saying to forgive 490 times; he's talking about forgiving in the most extreme situations—for example, the 430 years of the Israelites' captivity in Egypt. The Narrow Path explores a situation when two men meet along a path (one is a murderer, the other the victim) in a place where time has no meaning. Jesus forgave even the people who crucified him (Luke 23:34), but we sometimes cannot forgive even the slightest wrong against us. We must remember that the path to heaven is very narrow, so if you have an unforgiving and bitter heart, you cannot receive the kingdom of heaven. Can you love your enemy enough to forgive him? Overcoming an unforgiving heart cannot be done without the Holy Spirit because he provides the fruit: love, peace, joy, patience, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, kindness, and self-control. The Narrow Path tells the story of a case of forgiving a difficult wrong and repenting and how God forgives us as well.
The past can never be forgotten ... In Cornwall, a jaded Shannon is barely surviving off-grid in a caravan whilst her estranged childhood friend, Rosa, is living in luxury in a showcase house. Then, out of nowhere, somebody starts sending them threatening messages, and their carefully hidden pasts start to unravel. Having not seen each other since tragedy struck on their fifteenth birthdays, they are forced to come together to work out who is stalking them. Whoever it is wants to make them suffer, but why? Could it be connected to the events of that traumatic day? As the threats escalate, each of them is haunted in very different ways by their past actions, but the one thing Shannon and Rosa can agree on is they must find their tormentor before they take everything from them, including their lives. But are they prepared for the truth?

God's Miracle offers a riveting testimony of God's grace, mercy, and His love for those who trust and believe in Him and are obedient to His commandments. Elaine is a born-again Christian who experienced death and life after death. The book offers true insight into the reality of heaven and its glory. On October 6, 2016, Elaine was preparing to travel to Europe on a month-long vacation to visit with family and friends. It had been nineteen years since she last visited her youngest son's tomb site, and she was looking forward to the trip. As she worked in her vegetable garden that Thursday afternoon, she heard a voice say, "Call your helper to come over to help you." She said to herself, "I don't need help because I am almost finished." The voice again said, "Call your helper to come over to help you." The second time, she listened to the voice and called for help. Within a half hour of the helper's arrival, Elaine suffered a massive heart attack and died three times. By the grace of God, she was able to dial 911 and request assistance before passing out. Her helper intervened and completed the call. Upon arrival to her home, the EMT's found her on the floor in a pulseless state. She was transported to the local hospital to be pronounced. She was miraculously revived after being deceased for forty-five minutes the first time. She flat lined three more times at the hospital before being medivacked to the trauma center but died again in route. She died again at the trauma center. In reality, she actually died six times. Her survival was nothing short of a divine and miraculous return to life. She was renamed "Ms. Miracle" by the doctors and hospital staff at the trauma center as she sustained no neurological damage after the trauma of dying and being revived six separate times. After her experience in Heaven and upon her return to earth, she realized that the voice she heard that afternoon was the voice of God speaking to her.

A startling exploration of the history of the most controversial book of the Bible, by the bestselling author of Beyond Belief. Through the bestselling books of Elaine Pagels, thousands of readers have come to know and treasure the suppressed biblical texts known as the Gnostic Gospels. As one of the world's foremost religion scholars, she has been a pioneer in interpreting these books and illuminating their place in the early history of Christianity. Her new book, however, tackles a text that is firmly, dramatically within the New Testament canon: The Book of Revelation, the surreal apocalyptic vision of the end of the world . . . or is it? In this startling and timely book, Pagels returns The Book of Revelation to its historical origin, written as its author John of Patmos took aim at the Roman Empire after what is now known as "the Jewish War," in 66 CE. Militant Jews in Jerusalem, fired with religious fervor, waged an all-out war against Rome's occupation of Judea and their defeat resulted in the desecration of Jerusalem and its Great Temple. Pagels persuasively interprets Revelation as a scathing attack on the decadence of Rome. Soon after, however, a new sect known as "Christians" seized on John's text as a weapon against heresy and infidels of all kinds-Jews, even Christians who dissented from their increasingly rigid doctrines and hierarchies. In a time when global religious violence surges, Revelations explores how often those in power throughout history have sought to force "God's enemies" to submit or be killed. It is sure to appeal to Pagels's committed readers and bring her a whole new audience who want to understand the roots of dissent, violence, and division in the world's religions, and to appreciate the lasting appeal of this extraordinary text.
Evaluates the meaning of the controversial, newly-discovered Gospel of Judas, illustrating how the text offers an understanding of Judas's betrayal, the apostles' understanding of Jesus's death, and God's role in the crucifixion.
For a few seconds no one moved, stunned by what was happening. Released, as one, from their paralysis, they rushed to rescue Victor before Vladimir beat him to death. Luke Peterson was six feet five inches tall and weighed two hundred and fifty pounds. Because of the time he spent in the gym, he had a body built of solid muscle. Calling off the dog, he grabbed Vladimir by the scruff of his neck and threw him against the wall. The handcuffs he always carried were soon holding the drunken mans hands behind his back. Watching all this from the doorway of their room, Natalia began screaming, That girl is a filthy slut. She has always wanted my husband. She grabbed Anikas hair and tried to pull her to the floor. Bobby stepped in, pinning the out-of-control womans arms behind her back. Call the police, a struggling Natalia demanded. A shocked look quickly replaced her outrage when Luke pulled out his badge. He stuck it in her face. I AM the police. Now STEP BACK and SHUT UP.

Beginning with The Portrait of a Lady, this book shows how, in developing his unique form of realism, James highlights the tragic consequences of his American heroine's Romantic imagination, in particular, her Emersonian idealism. In order to expose Emerson's blind spot, a lacuna at the very centre of his New England Transcendentalism, James draws on the Gothic effects of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe, thereby producing an intensification of Isabel Archer's psychological state and precipitating her awakening to a fuller, heightened consciousness. Thus Romanticism takes an aesthetic turn, becoming distinctly Paterian and unleashing queer possibilities that are further developed in James's subsequent fiction. This book follows the Paterian thread, leading to The Author of Beltraffio and Théophile Gauthier, and thereby establishing an important connection with French culture. Drawing on James's famous analogy between the art of fiction and the art of the painter, the book explores a possible link to the Impressionist painters associated with the literary circle Émile Zola dominated. It then turns to A New England Winter, a tale about an American Impressionist painter, and finds traces leading back to James's initiation prèmiere. The book closes with an exploration of the possible sources of Kate Croy's unspeakable father in The Wings of the Dove and proposes a possible intertext, one that provides direct insight into the Victorian closet.

Welcome to the bully pulpit where opinions fly but common sense rules. Here’s where you’ll find straight talk about the most pressing issues of the day, all delivered in the trademark commonsense style of one of America’s most popular and admired television news anchors. Always resisting the political label that attempts to place people in one ideological camp or another, Greta Van Susteren speaks from the mind and the heart, not as a liberal or a conservative, but as a right-thinking, sensible citizen. “Our country is at a critical juncture,” she writes, and “too many of us are caught up in old definitions of left and right that no longer apply. If I favor the death penalty in some cases, does that make me right-wing? If I think hate crimes legislation is stupid, does that make me a conservative? If I happen to like and enjoy Ozzy Osbourne and have him on my show, does that make me a liberal? And if I believe that corporations should be held accountable if their products harm citizens and they should be subject to the rulings of a jury—ditto for doctors who commit medical malpractice—does that make me a lefty trial lawyer?” Here’s more of Greta in her own words: On the military: Liberty isn’t free. As a nation, we must provide for the men and women who put their lives on the line for us. That means good pay, adequate funding for defense, and our heartfelt support. Vietnam was a very long time ago. We Baby Boomers have to wake up and realize that today’s military is a different military from the one we grew up with, and we are fighting a very different war. Patriotism is not a conservative or a liberal thing. Patriotism, as far as I am concerned, is the duty and obligation of every American. On the Supreme Court: There should be a litmus test for Supreme Court and federal court judges, and that test should be their opinion about allowing public access to court proceedings. Let cameras inside the courthouse, or at least allow an audio feed to radio. What are they hiding? On the death penalty: It should be legal and available to courts and juries . . . but it should be used extremely rarely, and only when we are absolutely certain that a fair trial has taken place. On how you look: It’s your business and nobody else’s. Your looks and your life are not a democracy—not everybody gets a vote. Make your appearance and your choices a totalitarian regime—you are the boss. On fun: It isn’t a curse word. It’s actually quite serious business, as it makes the hard times livable and the sad times bearable. Fun should be part of a work environment, too. Stuffed shirts and snobs who can’t stop and laugh at themselves should be banished! In Greta’s company you’re guaranteed to get a fresh dose of common sense and a good hearty rant on many of the most important issues we face today. One more guarantee: you’ll have some good fun while you’re at it.
In Beyond Belief, renowned religion scholar Elaine Pagels continues her groundbreaking examination of the earliest Christian texts, arguing for an ongoing assessment of faith and a questioning of religious orthodoxy. Spurred on by personal tragedy and new scholarship from an international group of researchers, Pagels returns to her investigation of the “secret” Gospel of Thomas, and breathes new life into writings once thought heretical. As she arrives at an ever-deeper conviction in her own faith, Pagels reveals how faith allows for a diversity of interpretations, and that the “rogue” voices of Christianity encourage and sustain “the recognition of the light within us all.”
