This book empirically maps the decline in standards since the inauguration of Irish independence in 1922, to the loss of Irish economic sovereignty in 2010. It argues that the definition of corruption is an evolving one. As the nature of the state changes, so too does the type of corruption. New evidence is presented on the early institutional development of the state. Irish public life was motivated by an ethos which rejected patronage. Original research provides fresh insights into how the policies of economic protectionalism and discretionary decision making led to eight Tribunal inquires. The emergence of state capture within political decision making is examined by analysing political favouritism towards the beef industry. The degree to which unorthodox links between political donations impacted on policy choices which exacerbated the depth of Ireland’s economic collapse is considered. This book will appeal to students and scholars of Irish politics, corruption theory, governance, public policy and political financing.

Wondering if things could get any creepier." Hannah's knee was bouncing steadily. "Then I thought, did I see movement? I looked up from the grave toward that row of trees, and I think there's someone there, like I could see a face for a second, but then maybe it was just a swirl in the fog. I can't quite make it out. I better go. I said it out loud, and my voice startled me. It seemed loud. It made my heart jump. "But I keep standing there, and I know there's someone in those trees, but I just can't quite see it, and I'm afraid to move. Maybe if I stand still it won't notice me. It will get darker and the fog will get thicker, and who or whatever is there won't be able to see me and then I can get out of there. I can run, maybe, if I don't trip over something. A grave or something, somebody's flowers. These thoughts are racing through my mind, but my body feels heavy and slow." Hannah took a drink of her beer. Matt felt as if she had forgotten his presence. Her face was serene, almost smiling. "I sort of stopped thinking then, just stood there. My hair felt damp, my face was cold. When I forced myself to focus on where I was, I saw the face again, from the corner of my eye. Much closer now, maybe fifty feet away. I mean, I didn't really see it, like I see you now, but there was this impression. Something really horrible zeroing in on me, the mouth was too big and the eyes were glittering, with dark circles all the way around them. Something sneaking. The skin looked yellowy white against the gray white of the fog. It had cloaked itself with this fog, so it could get close and then pounce on me, like some huge spider. "I lost the image whenever I tried to focus on it, but I knew it was there. I knew I was in trouble. Then maybe twenty feet, then maybe fifteen, then I could see the hands and arms reaching and it was on me. It got its hands on me, and I don't think I ever even moved. Didn't turn to run, just stood there like a deer in headlights. It was ugly and it stunk, but it said sweet and comforting things. Even the pain, when it bit me, took place in the middle of all these kind, encouraging words and thoughts it put into my head. I think I was convinced this monster had my best interests at heart.

After returning to the United Kingdom, she took an SRC Fellowship to Bristol University to work on X-ray crystallography. From 1977 to 2009, she worked at the Open University chemistry department as a lecturer, senior lecturer, and Molecular Science Programme director, and she held an honorary senior lectureship there until her death in 2016. In the summer of 1970, the members of the New Orleans Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals understood clearly the realities of race in the South. Houston, Texas, like other Southern cities, had made haste toward racial school desegregation as slowly as the White Southern Federal courts would allow. When the High School of Performing and Visual Arts opened its doors in Houston a year later, a new superintendent and liberal-dominated Board of Education wished to demonstrate the positive potential of a voluntarily desegregated student body. HSPVA was the first United States public school for the arts specifically used for racial desegregation purposes, the prototype for the first public urban magnet program of desegregation used to replace a standing court order, and a continuing prototype for other public magnet schools for the arts across the United States. Talent Knows No Color is a 35-year history of HSPVA, exemplary in both arts and academics, which chronicles multi-perspective participant experiences within the context of ever-changing district education policies and demographics. Ten years of school system and HSPVA archival research, examination of local newspapers, and oral history interviews allow a rich narrative unusual among the already limited number of scholarly histories of individual public schools. It is the description and analysis of everyday occurrences that assist the reader in understanding what Series Editor O. L. Davis, Jr. refers to as “the continuing, likely never ending, practical development of one particular high school and its curriculum.”
