When I first saw Louis Glanzman’s paintings of twelve women in the gospels whose names are so familiar, something happened inside me. After a lifetime of knowing all about these women I felt, at last, that I had actually met them. Indeed I had. They were people I already knew: homemakers, sex workers, child runaways, crones, teachers, mothers, senior citizens...all of them knew Jesus. All of them were achetypes who reflected the journeys, struggles, joys and dreams of women today.--Edwina Gateley Includes 12 full-color paintings by Louis Glanzman, one of Americas most honored portraitists. He is famed for eightly marvelous Time magazine covers as well as his beloved drawings for the Pippi Longstocking series.
“I don’t have any idea what we are doing, where we are going, or if what we are doing is the right thing. I’m just trusting that God will take care of things from this point on.” With those words, Steve and Edwina Champion went to see their daughter for the first time on a cold, gray, winter day in Ukraine. They had never before flown on an airplane when they left their North Carolina home for a country where everything—the language, the food, even the toilet paper—was unfamiliar, and finding a simple can opener was nothing short of miraculous. After many frustrating days of being cooped up in a drab, soulless apartment, they were about to meet Lillyann, the little girl of their dreams. This is the story of one couple’s experience of adopting a child from a foreign country—a child that not only had developmental delays but was deaf. Most of all, it is a story about God’s hand in the lives of everyday people. Adopting Lillyann led Steve and Edwina back to the Lord and made crystal-clear the importance of a loving church family. Although they have since experienced numerous heartaches and trials, the Champions’ conviction that God always intended for Lillyann to be their daughter has never wavered, and their love for her has only deepened. Edwina’s letters to Lillyann capture the couple’s anticipation, anxiety, and joy with a freshness and poignancy that will touch your heart.

Hetty Clarkson is a typical modern woman: attractive, romantic and single. Her situation is the same as that of thousands of twenty- and thirty-somethings arriving in London each year, with one small exception. She is old enough to be their mother. It wasn't meant to be like this, but blame that on her philandering husband. When she caught him cheating with a younger woman, Hetty's traditional views of marriage hit the buffers. One divorce later, and Hetty is discovering that the etiquette books for the mid-life single woman haven't been written yet... In turn sexy and poignant, Chasing Men lifts the lid on how Hetty copes and finds contentment. In an age when mid-life singles are the fastest growing group in society, Edwina Currie has delivered a terrific and timely novel.
This study examines how Cyprian of Carthage, the most significant bishop in the early Latin tradition, appropriates the canonical Paul. Cyprian, like Paul, is a pastoral theologian, so his pastoral concerns provide a helpful lens through which to study his use of the apostle. These include divine truth and eternal glory; the church’s unity, ministry and sacraments; discipline and repentance; and wealth and welfare. Examining Cyprian’s use of Paul in these areas allows us to move beyond a simple literal/allegorical paradigm to appreciate the wide range of reading strategies used by Cyprian: model, image, maxim, title, contextual exegesis, direct application, prophetic fulfilment and qualification. It also provides a different perspective on Paul than the one arrived at by privileging a handful of texts. This study of Cyprian’s appropriation of Pauline texts therefore illuminates the interplay between text, context and theology in his exegesis. It also deepens our understanding of the early North African hermeneutical tradition and the early reception of Paul.

I settled onto this title as a breaking forth from the darkness that has captured me in different stages of my life. As I peer into the darkness of night, as the fears, tears and insecurities engulf me. There were some dark times. I hold onto the hopes and dreams and aspirations of tomorrow. I eagerly await the birth of a new day. As the light begins to get brighter and brighter, my heart begins to be overwhelmed, as I witness a new day and a new beginning. Waking up to the start of a new day with new adventures and a new outlook and new feelings. All captivating and exciting. A wonderment with a new vision. As the dawn rises, it brings a feeling of satisfaction and comfort. A warmth from deep within. As the new dawn rises it gives me a sense of appreciation of life. With that in my mind, comes love, joy and peace from the creator that made it all possible. This title and these writings will in itself express my feelings in different ways. I feel many people will relate to these various expressions that is written on these pages. My hope is that as I share these times and many feelings, that it can touch the hearts and minds of others, so that in time, they can look forward to the day when a New Dawn will rise in their lives as well. Good Reading To You All..

While millions feel politically marginalized, there is evidence that democracy is evolving into a conversation-based, public-centered practice called deliberative democracy. In this new form of democracy, public discussion, conscious reflection, and collective choice drive democratic governance and have the power to override democratic dysfunction. Illustrating this emerging possibility with examples from 28 years of US public engagement on LGBT equality, this book offers a practical model for the growth of deliberative democracy in which everyone can take part. It identifies the necessary social catalysts, the role of social networks and technology, and key pathways to addressing unconscious bias, hidden fears, and identity based polarization as they were overcome in the LGBT case. It demonstrates how each person can gain voice and influence in a deliberative democracy in which people once again become the true source of political power. This book will interest anyone who cares about the future of democracy.

Never far from centre stage, Edwina Currie falls comfortably into that category of celebrity you simply cannot ignore. Her first published diaries explosively revealed an affair with former Prime Minister John Major. This second volume, which begins in 1992 with her refusal to serve in Major's government, is no less revelatory about her colleagues, encounters with others in the public eye and, of course, her extraordinary career. Honest, compulsive and of the moment, this collection covers her life in Parliament up to the election of Blair's Labour government, but more importantly sees Edwina's emergence as a mainstay in the public imagination, first as a bestselling author, then as a commentator, broadcaster, presenter and performer. Shot through with her trademark effervescence and sense of fun, this volume of diaries documents one of the biggest characters in British public life at her saucy, scathing best.
Many of us have multiple identities, says Edwina Barvosa. We may view ourselves according to ethnicity, marital or family roles, political affiliation, sexuality, or any of several other "identities" we may use to organize our behavior and self-understanding at any given time. Various domains have offered nuggets of insight regarding the characteristics and political implications of seeing the self as made up of multiple identities, but many questions remain. In Wealth of Selves, Edwina Barvosa constructs an ambitious interdisciplinary blend of these insights and crafts them into an overarching theoretical framework for understanding multiple identities in terms of intersectionality, identity contradiction, and the political potential that lies within the practices of self-integration. Grounded in Gloria Anzaldua's concept of mestiza consciousness as well as in Western political thought, this reconsideration of the self promises to reshape our thinking on issues such as immigrant incorporation, national identity, political participation, the socially constructed sources of will and political critique, and the longevity of racial and gender conflicts. With its accessible style and rich cross-pollination among disciplines, Wealth of Selves will reward readers in political science, philosophy, race, ethnic, and American studies, as well as in borderlands, sexuality, and gender studies.
