Edwin (Eddie) Scott knew from boyhood that he wanted to entertain people. His talent for making people laugh helped him to make a living as a Butlins Redcoat and later an Entertainments Director on board cruise ships, while he also worked as a 'walk-on' in a host of hit TV series including Hi de Hi, 'Allo 'Allo, Only Fools and Horses and The Bill. A more serious side of his personality led to him becoming an expert bridge player, qualifying as a teacher and becoming a professional. Along the way, despite a somewhat turbulent personal life featuring one or two run-ins with alcohol, he and his wife raised three beautiful daughters. This is his story

Hove was a fishing village with few people as recently as 1801. Thirty-four years later Horsfield, in his history of the county, described it as 'a mean and insignificant assemblage of huts'. On a shoreline subject to erosion and plundering French raiders, it lacked a market for its few families. From this unpromising beginning the town developed with broad avenues and tidy streets which possess a certain amount of style. Due to Victorian entrepreneurs and the search for fashionable places, the village swallowed up the surrounding land to become the Borough of Hove.
This is the life story of Eddie Martin, written at age 88 as he recalls both his physical and spiritual journey, his observations and lessons learned. Eddie makes the statement that his was an ordinary life and therefore, just the story of an ordinary man. But in fact, his story is one of an extraordinary man, a story that would be impactful to anyone who reads it today. This is the story of a man who lived a life of incredible perserverance, resourcefulness and dedication to provide for his family in difficult times and who demonstrated humility in times of prosperity. A man who lived life with gratitude and always brought the gift of music and beauty to others. Eddie is our Dad. His life has provided a roadmap on how to live a life of integrity and success, how to question, yet live a life of faith and leadership.
