“Profound, vital and correct. Hirsch highlights the essence of our American being and the radical changes in education necessary to sustain that essence. Concerned citizens, teachers, and parents take note! We ignore this book at our peril."— Joel Klein, former Chancellor of New York City Public Schools In this powerful manifesto, the bestselling author of Cultural Literacy addresses the failures of America’s early education system and its impact on our current national malaise, advocating for a shared knowledge curriculum students everywhere can be taught—an educational foundation that can help improve and strengthen America’s unity, identity, and democracy. In How to Educate a Citizen, E.D. Hirsch continues the conversation he began thirty years ago with his classic bestseller Cultural Literacy, urging America’s public schools, particularly at the elementary level, to educate our children more effectively to help heal and preserve the nation. Since the 1960s, our schools have been relying on “child-centered learning.” History, geography, science, civics, and other essential knowledge have been dumbed down by vacuous learning “techniques” and “values-based” curricula; indoctrinated by graduate schools of education, administrators and educators have believed they are teaching reading and critical thinking skills. Yet these cannot be taught in the absence of strong content, Hirsch argues. The consequence is a loss of shared knowledge that would enable us to work together, understand one another, and make coherent, informed decisions. A broken approach to school not only leaves our children under-prepared and erodes the American dream but also loosens the spiritual bonds and unity that hold the nation together. Drawing on early schoolmasters and educational reformers such as Noah Webster and Horace Mann, Hirsch charts the rise and fall of the American early education system and provides a blueprint for closing the national gap in knowledge, communications, and allegiance. Critical and compelling, How to Educate a Citizen galvanizes our schools to equip children with the power of shared knowledge.

Edward Power sets the reader down in the midst of a February 2017 blizzard that raked Utah’s Uinta Range as nine snowboarders made their way into the backcountry for a day of intense adventure. As the boarders were taking their first turns, expert avalanche forecaster Craig Gordon was tracking the storm and its impact, posting one of the most dire avalanche forecasts and warnings in his career. In Dragons in the Snow, Power delves into the research and science behind avalanche forecasting and rescue, weaving in the art of backcountry skiing as well as dramatic tales of avalanche accidents, rescues, and recoveries. And he paints compelling portraits of the men and women who have made the study of avalanches their life’s work. The tales told by these avalanche forecasters, as well as the stories of the backcountry riders who may "wake the dragon" make for not just a compelling read, but also a powerful tool for raising avalanche awareness in everyone who plays in the winter backcountry.

The United States Government has made trillions of dollars in unfunded promises for programs like Social Security and Medicare—and the only way to deliver on these promises is to raise taxes. Some experts have even suggested that tax rates will need to double, just to keep our country solvent. Unfortunately, if you're like most Americans, you've saved the majority of your retirement assets in tax-deferred vehicles like 401(k)s and IRAs. In The Power of Zero, McKnight provides a concise, step-by-step roadmap on how to get to the 0% tax bracket by the time you retire, effectively eliminating tax rate risk from your retirement picture. Now, in this expanded edition, McKnight has updated the book with a new chapter on the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, showing readers how to navigate the new tax law, and how they can extend the life of their retirement savings by taking advantage of it now. This results-based resource provides professionals with eight highly-effective lesson plans for teaching anger management to teens. Each lesson can stand alone or be used as an eight week anger management program. Designed and tested for small group settings, the lessons work for classroom lessons. Originally, co-facilitated by a substance abuse professional and a seasoned special education teacher, the focus is to help young adults realize that they have the power to take control of their lives and emotions. This work addresses the impact substance abuse has on the brain and emotions. Many teens believe they were "born angry' and cannot change. These lessons teach youth that they have the power to choose healthy responses to anger. Through engaging lessons, teens learn to, *use empowering language, *to take responsibility for their behavior, *and to understand the social, cultural, and personal influences that shape their thinking. Appendices include a reproducible pre/post-test and sample charts to use in the lessons. The lessons draw from several bodies of knowledge including cognitive intervention techniques, Eastern philosophy, brain research theories, and educational psychology.
This book is the brainchild of a dissertation that was born from a discussion I had with my advisor, Dr. Harold Goldstein, in 2013. At the time, I had just passed my second doctoral exam and advanced to Level III (ABD) Candidacy for the degree, and was seeking an advisor and committee members to assist me by participating on my research review committee. Dr. Goldstein graciously accepted my invitation, and we discussed what interested me, along with the research passions I had developed during my matriculation at my beloved alma mater, City University of New York Graduate Center and Baruch College / CUNY. My first idea was to explore leadership issues; especially pertinent to me was the development of executive minority leadership in todays corporations.

Our Energy Spectrum Whenever I have a problem to solve, I know that both the problem and the solution are constructed from energy. If I really thought about it, I would probably conclude that all of my problems while on this planet earth were created by human energies. This is especially true of our health. Whenever I look for a solution, I invariably begin with physical symptoms and arrive mostly at a physical solution. I know that we all have energies that are not physical. We have energies of a higher vibration with varying polarities that manifest as thought, emotion, subconscious impressions, and even spiritual impressions. All of these energies are required to promote true holistic healing. The healing energies that Im referring to dont merely suppress symptoms either, as the general populations seem to prefer. Healing energies must treat the whole person both physical and subtle so that healing can be more permanent and more satisfying. In order to accomplish this, however, a change of viewpoint, a change of attitude, or even a change in beliefs is often required. In addition, no healing is possible without an understanding of the laws that govern the physical as well as the more subtle realms of mind and Spirit. Violation of these laws is the main reason that we get sick, suffer, and die. Therefore, those ancient barriers that our institutions have constructed between science, psychology and religion must come down. Then and only then will we understand what laws we violated that made us sick, and what we must do to get well. Ed Leary

“A wonderful book for thinking about how to release ourselves from crippling processes. It's time for men—and for all of us—to stand up and say, ‘Give us back our full humanity, give us back our dignity.'” —Paul Gilbert, PhD, author of The Compassionate Mind In a recent FiveThirtyEight poll, 60 percent of men surveyed said society puts pressure on men to behave in a way that is unhealthy or bad. Men account for 80 percent of suicides in the United States, and three in ten American men have suffered from depression. Ed Adams and Ed Frauenheim say a big part of the problem is a model of masculinity that's become outmoded and even dangerous, to both men and women. The conventional notion of what it means to be a man—what Adams and Frauenheim call “Confined Masculinity”—traps men in an emotional straitjacket; steers them toward selfishness, misogyny, and violence; and severely limits their possibilities. As an antidote, they propose a new paradigm: Liberating Masculinity. It builds on traditional masculine roles like the protector and provider, expanding men's options to include caring, collaboration, emotional expressivity, an inclusive spirit, and environmental stewardship. Through hopeful stories of men who have freed themselves from the strictures of Confined Masculinity, interviews with both leaders and everyday men, and practical exercises, this book shows the power of a masculinity defined by what the authors call the five Cs: curiosity, courage, compassion, connection, and commitment. Men will discover a way of being that fosters healthy, harmonious relationships at home, at work, and in the world.
This "profoundly wise" look at how to foster connections, attachment, and resiliency explains why working through discord is the key to better relationships. (Sue Johnson, bestselling author of Hold Me Tight) You might think that perfect harmony is the defining characteristic of healthy relationships, but the truth is that human interactions are messy, complicated, and confusing. And according to renowned psychologist Ed Tronick and pediatrician Claudia Gold, that is not only okay, it is actually crucial to our social and emotional development. In The Power of Discord they show how working through the inevitable dissonance of human connection is the path to better relationships with romantic partners, family, friends, and colleagues. Dr. Tronick was one of the first researchers to show that babies are profoundly affected by their parents' emotions and behavior via "The Still-Face Experiment." His work, which brought about a foundational shift in our understanding of human development, shows that our highly evolved sense of self makes us separate, yet our survival depends on connection. And so we approximate, iteratively learning about one another's desires and intentions, and gaining confidence in the process as we correct the mistakes and misunderstandings that arise. Working through the volley of mismatch and repair in everyday life helps us form deep, lasting, trusting relationships, resilience in times of stress and trauma, and a solid sense of self in the world. Drawing on Dr. Tronick's research and Dr. Gold's clinical experience, The Power of Discord is a refreshing and original look at our ability to relate to others and to ourselves.
