Author Ed Lacy (a pseudonym for Leonard Zinberg, 1911-1968) was a prolific writer of pulp crime fiction, and is credited with creating the first believable African-American private eye in American fiction, Toussaint Marcus Moore (in Room to Swing, 1957). Obstreperous Dave Wintino, rookie cop, looks further into the murders of two retired members of the force, presumes that more than just a stick-up is involved, and exhumes a less legitimate deal from the past. Knowing that this job may cost him his wife as well as his life, Dave completes his stubborn search for the killer... Not as original as the first two, but a virile and visceral form of entertainment.

In December 1991 the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics—born in violent revolution and dominated for more than six decades by highly authoritarian rule—was dissolved by its constituent republics. The causes for this remarkable event will be probed for many years to come. Our understanding of it may never be complete. Nevertheless, it is evident even now that part of the story lay in a conscious redirection of policy by specific individuals. Those at the center of political and economic power understood the flaws in their system well enough to initiate a process of reform, but one that triggered a more massive transformation than they had intended. The process has left enormous turmoil in this wake. Political power has dissipated in all the new states emerging from the fragmented former USSR, and all are struggling to establish some constitutional order. They do so under conditions of severe austerity as they seed to reconstruct their once integrated, highly concentrated, internationally isolated economy into independent instruments of national viability. With no detailed blueprint available, and with only fractured mechanisms of policy control at their disposal, these new nations are being carried along by the inertia of state enterprises and by a spontaneous process or regeneration at the grass-roots level. This book, which analyzes Gorbachev's foreign economic strategy, provides a window for understanding the disintegrative forces that stymied his reforms and eventually defeated him, undermining the country he sought to preserve. Gorbachev was committed to ending Soviet isolation from the world economy and at the same time saving Soviet socialism. Ironically, it is the destruction of Soviet socialism and the emergence of new post-Soviet states, that has begun to break down the isolationist barriers erected over the last seven decades. There are a finite number of places to stop along the Alaska Highway; most guidebooks will give you pretty much all of them. What makes this one different is its tone. The authors obvious enjoy both the road and writing about it. Personal anecdotes are lightly sprinkled into the text, giving the impression that yes, the authors know what they're talking about. I learned little bits of history about the areas I rode through; not so much that it weighed down the book, but just enough to pique my interest and send me scampering to the library once I got back. Also, the book is laid out very well. Many talented people have found a measure of fame and fortune through fields such as acting, singing or songwriting; some show talent and proficiency in more than one endeavor (i.e., singers who write their own material). But not every artist is multitalented. Vocalists whose acting performances were panned by critics, or actors whose recordings made them laughingstocks rather than chartbusters, will attest to this. There are, however, exceptions, and Ed Rambeau, best known for his achievements in pop music, is such an exception. Rambeau's debut novel, a murder mystery entitled FORBIDDEN STEPS, is Exhibit A, proof beyond a reasonable doubt that Rambeau is one of those gifted entertainers who can more than hold his own in just about any field of the arts.
