The Economic and Social Research Council is the UK's leading research and training agency addressing economic and social concerns. The aim is to provide research on issues of importance to business, the public sector and government. This is the annual report for 2005-06, which marked the Council's 40th anniversary. The report covers: research funding and programmes; building capacity in the research community; research resources; engaging society (emphasising the contribution of social science to economic performance and quality of life); and the Council's performance, including the annual accounts. Case studies are used throughout to illustrate the Council's research involvement and achievements.
