Originally published in 1949, this book is a gripping collection of reminiscences on the death of the great Indian chief, Crazy Horse, by the military men who were present on that fateful day on September 5, 1877 at old Fort Robinson, Nebraska: Jesse M. Lee , V. T. McGillycuddy, H. R. Lemly, and George McAnulty. Crazy Horse was one of the “irreconcilables” of the Sioux, an Indian who refused to be “reconstructed” and follow the white man’s road. Like Sitting Bull he had little or no use for the white man, and especially those in authority at Washington. This is not surprising, considering the unjust treatment the Indian received, and the trickery and deceit practiced upon him. Although but a young man, even at the time of his treacherous murder, Crazy Horse had already won his spurs in the defeat of Col. J. J. Reynolds in the Powder River fight of March 17, 1876, and of his practical defeat of General George Crook’s forces in the Rosebud fight of June 17, 1876, to say nothing of the leading part he played in the annihilation of Custer’s immediate command of five troops of the Seventh Cavalry, June 25, 1876, at the battle of the Little Big Horn, in South-eastern Montana. After all these brilliant “coups” the reputation of Crazy Horse, as a fighting chief, inspiring leader and strategist, was secure among his own people.
Colonial Canada changed enormously between the 1760s and the 1860s, the Conquest and Confederation, but the idea of civilization seen to guide those transformations changed still more. A cosmopolitan and optimistic theory of history was written into the founding Canadian constitution as a check on state violence, only to be reversed and undone over the next century. Civilization was hegemony, a contradictory theory of unrestrained power and restraints on that power. Occupying a middle ground between British and American hegemonies, all the different peoples living in Canada felt those contradictions very sharply. Both Britain and America came to despair of bending Canada violently to their will, and new forms of hegemony, a greater reckoning with soft power, emerged in the wake of those failures. E.A. Heaman shows that the view from colonial Canada matters for intellectual and political history. Canada posed serious challenges to the Scottish Enlightenment, the Pax Britannica, American manifest destiny, and the emerging model of the nation-state. David Hume’s theory of history shaped the Canadian imaginary in constitutional documents, much-thumbed histories, and a certain liberal-conservative political and financial orientation. But as settlers flooded across the continent, cosmopolitanism became chauvinism, and the idea of civilization was put to accomplishing plunder and predation on a transcontinental scale. Case studies show crucial moments of conceptual reversal, some broadly representative and some unique to Canada. Dissecting the Seven Years’ War, domestic relations, the fiscal military state, liberal reform, social statistics, democracy, constitutionalism, and scholarly history, Heaman shows how key British and Canadian public figures grappled with the growing gap between theory and practice. By historicizing the concept of civilization, this book connects Enlightenment ideals and anti-colonialism, shown in contest with colonialism in Canada before Confederation.

THE winning of the West was no child’s play! It was war—war of the most brutal and inhuman type on the part of both Indians and whites. The Indian was fighting for his home, his commissary, his lands—lands ceded him through solemn treaty with the United States government—and what man, of any nation (if he is any sort of man) will not fight “for home and native land”? The white man fought to advance the cause of civilization, irrespective (in most instances) of the rights of the Indian, and without regard to his future existence. Civilization won—and to civilization’s shame, it was at the cost of unnumbered thousands of lives and the shedding of much human blood of both whites and reds. I am not a believer in the old adage that “the only good Indian is a dead Indian.” My sympathy is with the red man. The early white traders who trafficked with the Indian were, as a rule, a class of men of little conscience and few scruples, who would stoop to any deceit or trickery to rob the Indian of his furs and pelts. It was the early trader who introduced whiskey among the Indian tribes; who, through fraud and knavery, turned the red man against the whites of whatever class. This was the beginning of the hatred and contempt which made all white men, good or bad, soon look alike to the warring savage. In this volume of the “Frontier Series” I have written of a few of the most noted battles between the red man and the white man. As in the previous volume, no fiction is employed in these pages. Every incident related actually occurred, and is a part of the history of the old West. Some biographical sketches of noted frontier characters are included. The chapter on the destruction of the buffalo may well make the present-day sportsman pause and reflect.

The role of women in church leadership is controversial; however, the Pentecostal tradition, and specifically the Assemblies of God, has held that women can serve at all levels of church leadership. Citing their distinctive approach to theology, Pentecostals embrace women’s leadership in policy, but in practice, women are often frustrated by the lack of opportunity and representation in leadership roles.
